Thanks to all of you who have volunteered so far! We will be staging the collection from the Portofino parking lot at the corner of Lakeview Parkway and Hawthorne Parkway at 7:30 a.m. Once there we can direct you where to go and get you set up with an apron and jug (bring your own gallon milk jug with the top cut off or similar if you can). Weather for the weekend looks very promising but dress warm and wear good shoes.

Unfortunately we are EXTREMELY SHORT of volunteers for this collection - especially on friday. I know most of us are working, but if you have some vacation time available, a long lunch, can go in late or get out early to help us we could really use your assistance. We can work around your schedule and even an hour or two is helpful!

There are 4 intersections available to us...and I don't have enough volunteers to fully staff even one. Every corner that is not fully staffed for these 2 days means thousands of dollars that will not be donated to Autism. This is not hard to do - no special skills are required. You have seen many corner collections  and wondered why doesn't the Autism Society do this...well this is your chance! PLEASE join us!

The Village of Vernon Hills approved our request for a corner can collection on November 6 and 7. We can do as many as 4 corners those days. We will run the collections from 8 a.m. until approximately 6:00 p.m. (or perhaps earlier as the daylight savings ends the week before).

I need YOU to volunteer as much time as you can on these two days...please let me know the day and time you can help out! It is the easiest thing to do...anyone 16 and over can collect on the street. The locations are right near Hawthorne Center mall so traffic will be high!

The Autism Society will provide everything we need to make this successful but it cannot provide people! Friends and relatives and neighbors and coworkers are all welcome! PLEASE volunteer!

For those of you who have sent me your Legislative and Representative District numbers OR the names of your State Senator and State Representative, thank you.
For those who have not, if you would take a few minutes to do that, it would be most appreciated.
In addition, I need your email address. This information will not be shared with anyone but the Campaign for Real Choice and I vouch for them. The Special Needs Newsletter – August

Disability.gov

If you've tried to look for information on government agency websites, you know how confusing it is.  The U.S. Department of Labor launched Disability.gov to connect those with special needs with disability information from 22 federal agencies and state and local governments.  Look up info on benefits, civil rights, community life, education, emergency preparedness, health, housing, technology and transportation.

One Place for Special Needs

The disability information network has a new FREE local resource directory of services and programs.   You can do a quick search for those who make house calls and offer employment to those with disabilities.  Disability groups can search for speakers and those who offer meeting space for support groups.  Parents can also recommend programs and services for other families.

Back to School links

It seems like we were just looking forward to summer and already it's almost over.  Here are some Back to School links to help your child make a smooth transition.

Accommodations – Over 100 web links on classroom accommodations including articles, strategies and visual supports.

Back to school social story – Links to social stories, school success tips and preparing your child and school.

Graphic organizers – Nearly 40 organizers (Word or pdf) in English and Spanish for time lines, predicting, writing, math and more.  From Pomperaug Regional School District 15

How to prepare for the first day of college – In this video, Watchmojo tells you the top 10 things to do at the beginning of the school year.

School drills – Links to videos, lessons and other activities for fire, earthquake and tornado drills.

School rules – Links to lessons, social stories and other activities on many different rules for bus, classroom, cafeteria and more.

Transitioning to middle school – Series of links to help your child make the transition to middle school

Transitioning to high school – Links to help your teen make the transition to high school

See the full newsletter along with Accommodations reminder t-shirts for tactile, visual, kinesthetic and auditory learners.
