Aloha everyone
I thought this, though a tad negative, might help both parents and
martial arts instructors

HOW NOT to TEACH MARTIAL ARTS to CHILDREN a GUIDE for PARENTS and
INSTRUCTORS
I probably won't make any friends with this kwik tip, but I recently
checked out three martial arts schools for my five year old son.
Granted most martial arts instructors don't have my background. I'm
a state dual certified teacher qualified to teach both physical
education and physical education for special education in the state
of Illinois. I have expertise in behavior modification with an
emphasis on positive reinforcement methodology. I've been in martial
arts for over 30 years and have taught children and adults both
privately and in groups.
That being said I may be aware of some teaching principles used
regularly in physical education that should be applied to martial
arts and self-defense training. Since this is a "Kwik Tip" I'll get
to the points.
DON'T LINE STUDENTS UP ONE BEHIND THE OTHER.
Would you pay to have your child spend over half of his/her class
time looking at the back of another kid's head? Line the students up
sideways so they can observe techniques and drills while awaiting
their turn.
DON'T USE NONMARTIAL ARTS DRILLS AND RELAYS FOR HALF OR MORE THE
CLASS PERIOD.
Did the parents sign their children up for self-defense or to learn
to do the crab walk? With very little thought, all of your drills
and relays can be martial arts oriented.
DON'T PUNISH STUDENTS WITH AN ACTIVITY YOU WANT TO BE POSITIVE.
See my printable ebook with positive reinforcement techniques and
tutoring techniques called Raising Your Child to be More Positive
and More Confident
http://PositiveReinforcementEbook.notlong.com.
In a nutshell, however, when I was student teaching a physical
educator said it to me best when she said,
"Why punish students with an activity we're trying to promote?"
Pushups being the most widely abused positive activity we use to
punish both adults and children.
Enjoy, I look forward to sharing both your positive and negative
constructive opinions so we can all gain from the experience.
Rick
