Thought I might add some info on the subject. I am 41 years old and 1
1/2 years out from PRC surgery. I have not ever been diagnosed with KD
but the original injury I had as a child caused the same symptoms that
are part of the disease. I eventually got to the point that I could
not function on a dailey basis with my hand from the pain. The
increase in pain level and weakness was rapid and noticable. I will
not lie about the surgery, after I got home from it I could not lift
even a soda with the hand and it took 6 months for it to develop any
strenght at all. But after the year and a half I have had to recover I
can honestly say that my hand is stronger now than before the surgery.
I was told to expect only a 60% return in flex and 65% return in
strength. I am currently at about 72% flex and 110% strength. The
strength is because it hurt to much to use it before the surgery but
now the pain is completely gone and I am able to apply more force with
the hand. As an example I am back to bowling full time without a brace
of any kind on my hand. I do not know the activity level of your son,
nor do I know the full effect from KD, but I do know that this
proceedure called a "salvage" put me back into my life.

Also, if I would have gotten this fixed as a kid I would never have
had to have the surgery in the first place. One thing to remember is
that a kid heals faster than a 41 year old and he might not take that
long to recover.

As for all the things kids do now days, I can throw a baseball,
hit, bowl, play darts, shoot a basketball (tho I stink at it), do push
ups, lift weights, and work pain free.

I'm sorry to know about your problems but I'm so glad that you finally got
somewhere with all that dellima you've been going through for the past couple of
years. I hope that you get the proper treatment now for your problems.
Hang in there J-man and be brave , I know exactly how you feel as I also have
bilateral KD and both are in that dreadful early painful stage I , and I also
have couple of cysts in each wrist just like you plus the De Quervain syndrome
in the right wrist, but I'm trying my best to keep them under control by trying
not to over-use my hands and taking care of them with the anti-inflamatory gel
massage and parrafin bath , and always keeping my splints on.
I just want to add one more thing ,(( Don't accept any cortisone shots ))as I
tried that once and it only made my problem worse plus it gave me so much
pain.For some people the shot may give them temporary pain relief  which makes
them feel that thier problem is solved while infact it worsened but they don't
feel it because they don't feel the pain.

So finally Jay has been diagnosed. It was just about time !

In the litteratur, stage 1 is also referred to as the "acute stage". That might
explain the pain ......
Is the KD bilateral ?

Funny how we patients rather often diagnose ourselves and only need the doctors
opinion as a confirmation of what we already knew ....

Surely noone (not even any quack-dr) will ever state again that these
handproblems of Jay exist "only in his head" !!!   That's about the worst thing
anyone can say to a person in pain....  I consider it a CRIME !!

Hopefully these diagnosis will bring some positive changes in the activity-level
of your Canadian healthcare-system and in your situation.

Of course it isn't appropriate to congratulate someone to have got the
KD-diagnos. But in these circumstances and after all the pain, the efforts, the
waiting and the dissapointments you have gone through, I'm ready to say:

CONGRATULATIONS JAY, for the fact that Your problems are finally diagnosed and
therefore NOT any more possible to neglect for the so called care-givers.

GOOD LUCK in your continued fight to get the best treatment !!

OK here we go gang!!! :o(

We went to the doc's office yesterday to find out what is REALLY going on for
J-man and his wrists....

There are a few problems going on in there... 1) He has cysts.... but we knew
that already!
2) He has narrowing of the arteries
3) He has the start of KD .... so like stage 1

The doc is putting him on some kind of meds that I will get the name of for you
all once I can find the paper with the name of it.... and after a month Jay will
be going back to the doc to see what we can do next... he will also have to find
a new doc that knows what he is talking about that isn't a quack. lol

OK so that's it in a nut shell and we will let ya know more once we know.
