Shalom,
I use the Medtronic MiniMed 508 pump and change the infusion site roughly every
three days. I use approximately 40+ units of Novolog per day of which 17.5 is
the daily basal dosage. 40 times 3 would mean I should put in 120 units plus
5.0 to cover the prime when I change the site plus a few extra units when I
manually prime during the site change. However, instead of starting with 130 or
140 units, I start with 160 units. By the time I finish priming, my new
reservoir has 134 units to last me 3 days.
I am a believer in putting in more insulin than I will actually need. Even if
some insulin will be wasted, it is worth it for peace of mind to know that I
have a little extra to cover me until my next site change.
Of course, each diabetic is different so this might not apply to your son is a
child. But I hope this helps anyway.

Subject: [JewishIP] Insulin reservoirs
Ran into the following problem yesterday. Changed my son's site Motzai
Shabbos (Saturday night). His basal rates indicate a daily basal of 13
units. He boluses 1 unit for every 20 carbs. So on an average day he will
probably bolus 10 - 12 units. When I changed his site I filled the reservoir
with about 120 units so after the prime the pump reported 95 units. Had an
occlusion error about noon. We changed the infusion set only and the site
(not the reservoir). Had another occlusion error about 12:37 AM. Again we
only changed the set and the site but after priming the reservoir only had
20 units left. So now the question: How much insulin should one keep in the
reservoir? Is there a good formula i.e. ((Daily basal + estimated boluses)x#
of days)+prime? Should one put in 50 extra units which might go to waste?
Any thoughts?
