My son is 14. July 4th will be 3 yrs with Type I diabetes, 2 yrs. on the D
Tron + pump with Ultraflex Soft infusion set. He uses Smith & Nephew IV prep
plus Smith & Nephew Opsite V3000. We test a lot. 8-10 times a day. He often
forgets to bolus for a meal, so I ask usually after we start a meal. Basal
rates are never lost when the battery is replaced - so that helps. If Jack
is running high, & he is not getting sick or forgot to bolus, he usually
needs to do a set change & that helps within an hour. Due to his going
through puberty I increase his basals weekly. He take under 160 units a day
so the prefilled cartridges that hold 300 are great for him. He loves his
pump. We think the Freestyle meter is great because it uses the least amount
of blood for testing. Now we also use the Freestyle Tracker at home(I'm not
ready to send that to school). With the Tracker I record everything,
download it to the Freestyle CoPilot website, & can view Jack's history.
When he travels he puts his spare cartridges of insulin in a Frio pouch to
keep it cool, He wears a small Eagle Creek bag on his waist with daily
supplies. A larger black padded camera bag is great for overnights. I keep
it ready to go in the kitchen cabinet. We visit the Ped. Diabetes Educator &
Ped Type I Dietitian at Hershey Med every 3 months. Every time we meet we
learn so many new tricks. They are wonderful. This is not an easy job. I
feel it is a team effort. - a tired but very thankful mom
