Great that they'll let you do that, Bev. Did you go directly through
Patty or through the company itself?
Please be aware that you can get an idea about any of the systems in
a week, but I think it really takes a couple of months or so to get
them to work well for you. Do the others with cgm in this group agree?

I just wanted to take a minute to thank all of you for making me feel so welcome. I was very nervous about moving from my comfort zone in Colorado to the East Coast - the last place I thought I would ever live.

You have all made my transition so much easier, and I am very grateful. The meeting last weekend was very informative - when the Ping is integrated with the Dexcom, I may look at getting it. Since I have new insurance, they shouldn't care when the warranty on my MM is up.

It was an awful lot of fun bowling. I'd never even heard of 'candlepin' bowling, and I thought it was just a riot. I'd also never heard of a bowling alley that didn't serve beer. Weird. It seems un-American to go bowling without having a beer or three. That's always been one of my main motivations behind bowling.

The only people I know that I don't work with is all of you, and I really do appreciate this group and how nice you have all been to me.

Dexcom has agreed to let me try their CGMS.  I will get hooked up on Tuesday for a week.
The week after Thanksgiving I'll do the blind one with Medtronic just to see what I'm doing without any tweaking.  This is for informational purposes.

Now I'm wondering about the differences in the downloaded data.  How does one sync the Dexcom with the pump to see the entire picture?

certainly not my intent.

When I worked for MediSense/Abbott, our meters were only good for a certain altitude. Because the chemicals and enzymes were based on oxygen, the higher the altitude, the more it could effect your readings. I cannot recall how it would affect them (higher or lower) but I know it could depending on the altitude.  The package insert of the strips would state the altitude specs for the meter and strips.

Sorry I didn't   make the last meeting. It sounds like it was interesting.
I had my 3rd anniversary of pumping this past month. It's been such a big change in my diabetes. No more serious and scary lows from my Lantus.  And I don;t have to eat a ton of food so I can go to the gym to work out.

Hopefully, I will make it to the December meeting.
I'm traveling home to Philly this weekend for Thanksgiving.  I hope everyone has a great turkey day !!

Tom,

I found when I lived in Calif. and would hike and backpack in the Sierra that my BGs would escalate.  The elevation definitely had an impact on BGs.

I would really like to try a 1-week trial of the Dexcom 7+ to compare real-time vs. my MM. I would even be willing to write up my impressions/ findings if I can do that. I'd like to do the same with the Navigator.

Since I have new insurance, I don't think I will have to wait until the warranty period is up to get a new pump/cgm. I'm strongly leaning toward the Ping/Dexcom integration when it is available. I'm very sensitive to insulin, so the .05 basal rate is very attractive to me.

For some reason, since I've moved here, I've been taking about 20% less insulin than I did in Colorado. I'm baffled by this. The only two factors that have changed have been the altitude and the humidity. I can't figure it out.

Bev

I'm on the Dexcom and I reported that I had gotten some reading with the receiver was upstairs. I think this was unusual, because I've also had nights where there were gaps in the readings although the receiver hadn't moved any.

My wife likes the Dexcom because I can put the receiver between us in the van and she can check readings just by pressing the button. That's made driving a lot less worrisome for her.

The local Dexcom rep is David Rogers his email is drogers@dexcom. com, he's generally be reasonable about getting back to me.

I do know that MM spends a lot more on research, but I've been impressed by how much the Dexcom has changed for the better since I started using it in March 2007.

The space changes so quickly, I wouldn't be surprised if things were the same in a year from now.

Bev, you should try and get at least a 1-week trial on each system you're considering. Until you've tried one, you can't really tell if it will work for you.

Good luck.

Thanks for starting this Tom.  I would also like to know.  I'm shopping CGMS systems now.  I'm rethinking the Paradigm after last weeks Dexcom presentation.  I did speak with the MM rep and she said the Paradigm RT system gives results for 3 and 24 hours but you do have the capability of looking at specific numbers.  Dexcom7 and the Medtronic Guardian let you see 3, 6, 12 and 24 hrs.

ANother question, is Roger on the Navigator?  The sensors for that are too big in my opinion.  But I liked that he was able to be upstairs and the unit was downstairs and still measured.  The MM rep said that you can walk away from the unit for upto 40 minutes and when you return it will pick up all the readings.

I'm so confused.  Originally I was going to go with MM becuase I liked that the pump and GCMS is all in one device.  I'm thinking that perhaps it's a good idea to have a separate unit to look at while driving, etc.

As for service, I emailed Dexcom on Sunday and still have not received a response and then I got the local reps name and number from my CDE and called him Tues and Wed and have heard nothing.  Medtronic has always been responsive.

Thanks.

Bev

At last weekend's meeting, Deb started to talk a little about how much she
dislikes the new Veo (new European MM pump/cgm) was. I was questioning her, and
she said we'd talk later.

Unfortunately, we never got around to it. So, Deb, can you talk a little bit
about why you think the Veo has so many problems? We talked a little about how
much Niko likes it. You obviously disagree.

You have all made my transition so much easier, and I am very grateful. The

Hi All,

It was indeed a very good and informative meeting.  Patty did a wonderful job.  Bernard thanks for the pictures...you should have been in one of them, next time.

I was a bowler and didn't test then but did later.  We had a very good time bowling.  We messed up in the beginning with the practice and then real game.  Charlie didn't get to practice (it's all dictated by a computer and none of us were savvy enough to figure out it's nuances in the beginning), so we had an order of boy girl boy girl.  They used first initials and our order got messed up in the beginning becuase of the practice which should have been J A T C C B (John, Alex, Tom, Carol, Charlie they used some weird sign for the C and it became known as the blob), and Bev.  The order became J=C (John + Charlie) and then the Blob = John.  ANyway you had to be there and we had fun.  BTW this was candle pin bowling so next time we do this more people might want to join us as the balls are small and light.

Many thanks to DEB who has brought us all together and for her diligence in keeping this group going.  I feel so blessed to have you all in my life.

Hi All,
I enjoyed the meeting today. Thanks for the photos Bernard. After today's meeting and hearing from Patty about the Dexcom7 Plus I am one step closer to getting a CGM. I still have to make a decision whether to get the Dexcom or the Navigator. I did try the Dexcom in a loaner program at Milford Medical Center and it was suggested that I try the Navigator before I decide. However I am using the Animas PING and I do believe that Animas and Dexcom will have a new device that combines the two sometime soon.

Did anyone participate in the Big Blue Test on Nov 14 WDD?  I was on my way home from the pumpers group luncheon at Applebees to my grand daughters birthday party and didn't stop at 2 pm to test my blood sugar or follow that with 14 minutes of exercise and test again. It's kinda hard to do when your driving south on Rte 128 (95).
How about the DESA members who went bowling in Woburn, did you do the Big Blue Test?

I did the big blue test on Saturday. I managed to get to my treadmill, so it was partly that and partly running around with my daughter.

I know others walked, or climbed stairs. A lot of us are using Twitter, you can see some of the folks that I follow here http://twitter.com/#/list/BernardF/diabuddies. On Saturday World Diabetes Days was the number 1 topic on Twitter for part of the day, this is a big achievement.

Let us know how your Navigator trial goes. I'll be interested to discover which way you go with CGM.

I'll either stick them in the mail to you or will
bring you a bunch in Dec. since I won't be coming
from home on Saturday. That ok?
Anyone else need some?

I have tons and tons of junk. Half a closet full as a matter of fact.
I've been pumping since 3//01 and have a lot of pump stuff. I also
have all the cgm paraphanalia as well as a katrillion old meters no
one will ever want or use. Anyone need lancets? I have at least

I would LOVE a Ping, now that I know what it is.

Does anyone else have one to give away?

Didn't come in my box. (Minimed 522)  Just saw Diane Doucette yesterday.  She says it used to be  included in the pkg. , now extra.

I just gave away the remote to my MM 522. It was pretty much useless for me, but there was a lady who was begging for one, and couldn't afford the $150. It came with my pump free.

It was stupid. I also only used it once. It's been gathering dust in my supply closet. Dang, that closet has a bunch of crap in it. Does everyone else have as much junk as I do?

I just gave away the remote to my MM 522. It was pretty much useless for me,
but there was a lady who was begging for one, and couldn't afford the $150. It

Exactly, Judy. The Ping allows you access if you put your pump in
your bra or inside your pantyhose (or panties). You can put it most
anywhere and not have to access it to bolus. It's also useful in cold
weather when your pump is on your waistband under your winter coat, a
sweater, and several other layers. I don't use it very often, but
when I do want it I'm really glad to have it.
I've heard many users say that the more they use it the more they
love it and that they gradually start using it all of the time.
Does paradigm have a remote? I'm thinking I recall that you can buy
one as an extra.
My old 508 had a remote but I hated it and used it only once.

Thanks. I find that wearing my pump on my leg when I wear a dress or
sweater is a pain to access except under a table!! I have a paradigm.
