I've been doing medical x-ray for about 35 years, and have
significant knowledge gained from that time. Anything I can
help with?

IF DIAPER CHANGING IS A PROBLEM FOR YOUR HUSBAND IN RESTROOMS, YOU MIGHT
WANT TO THINK ABOUT LOOKING INTO DISPOSABLE PULL UP UNDERWEAR.
I'VE TRIED A FEW DIFFERENT BRANDS, AND THEY SEEM TO BE PRETTY EFFECTIVE.
HOWEVER, FOR THAT EXTRA ADDED PROTECTION, I ALSO WEAR A PAIR OF PLASTIC
PANTS OVER THE DISPOSABLE UNDERWEAR.
I HAVE SPINA BIFIDA AND PROGRESSIVE MS, I STILL LEAD A PRETTY ACTIVE
PERSONAL AND SOCIAL LIFE.
SOO WHEN WERE OUT AND ABOUT, IT'S EITHER DISPOSABLE DIAPERS AND PLASTIC
PANTS, OR DISPOSABLE UNDERWEAR AND PLASTIC PANTS.
MY WIFE ISIN'T TO FOND OF THE DISPOSABLE PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET, SO WHEN
AT HOME, SHE KEEPS ME IN CLOTH DIAPERS AND PLASTIC PANTS.
THE DISPOSABLES DO HAVE THEIR PROPER PLACE IN SITUATIONS SUCH AS BEING
OUT IN PUBLIC.
HOPE THIS INFO IS OF SOME HELP TO YOU.
TAKE CARE,
TINYTONY :)

If the problem is bladder and not bladder and bowl you might have a
talk with your husbands Doctor and ash about a external catherter and
leg bag it could help put a end to diapers.
good luck.

Depending on your husband's disability many states
will allow you to assist a person of the opposite sex
in a restroom (i.e. You could come into the mens' room
to help him. The other option is if you have a vehcile
that allows him to lay down in the back (truck
w/canopy, van, SUV etc..). I know people who do this
and just throw blankets in the windows for privacy.

If he is only urinary incon then I would suggest using
better protection as the best solution to the problem.
Abena XPlus with an Abena soaker will last almost
anybody all day.

Due to a injuries suffered by my husband he needs me to check and
change his diaper for him. This is not a problem at home but when we
are out this poses a real problem. Checking is not a problem, I just
do a quick diaper check befor we get out of the car, but changing is a
real problem. If we are lucky enough to find a family restroom this
is not a problem but otherwise take the chance of leaks.

If anyone could give advise on this issue it would be really
appreciated.

Hi Dennis,

What you say is very true my friend, I hadn't planned it ever to happen buy heh they were cool about it and it was obviously easier for someone to tell when I was wet. I still wish it hadn't happened but I am stronger for it and they are a little more compassionate toward others.
take care,

Loosing a child can be a life long emotional and stressful situation.  Your fortunate to
have good neightbors... lol well that was one way of coming out in your diapers... Now
you dont have to worry about telling them...  Diapers are just a fact of life to some...
worse things could happen... live your life... its short enough anyway.   Dennis
Well, needless to say after I changed for the umpteenth time I accidentally forgot to put my shorts back on and just went back over and sat down with them, nobody was brave enough to tell me I forgot to put my pants back on. We sat around for a while and the neighbors wife told me I might want to go change, and I was like what! Then noticed I was only wearing a tee shirt and diaper, talk about being red faced. They were so cool about it especially when I tripped and almost fell over my chair on the way out of there as fast as possable. I am 36 till September 19th by the way.
Take care,
Jack

I sure hope it slips away, had a scary situation twice in the past three days while spending time with the neighbors. Thankfully I was already brave enough to inform them about my diapers. I was feeling really down after a friend found out his grandbaby had bone cancer, so I prayed for a bit then the harsh reality of when I lost my baby punched me in the face. So as dumb as it may have been I started driking with the neighbors. Well, needless to say after I changed for the umpteenth time I accidentally forgot to put my shorts back on and just went back over and sat down with them, nobody was brave enough to tell me I forgot to put my pants back on. By the way, I love my neighbors for being so nice to the skinny white guy next door(me). We sat around for a while and the neighbors wife told me I might want to go change, and I was like what! Then noticed I was only wearing a tee shirt and diaper, talk about being red faced. They were so cool about it especially when I tripped and almost fell over my chair on the way out of there as fast as possable. Needless to say they came and checked on the drunk little white guy and helped me change after finding me on the the closet/computer room floor. I had to clean the carpet tonight, I must have voided about 3 times before they found me thankfully I had been drinking or the slell would have gagged me. anyway getting back to the post, I am also thinking about going back to my old urologist and trying to get a perscription for my diapers. ast month I spent almost $200.00 dollars on diapers and had to put some now past due bills to the way side. Mine hurt me so badly the last time I bled for three days before I didn't feel like passing out after voiding. I am so very scared about going back I keep peeing thinking about it. I am 36 till September 19th by the way.

Yes, society tells us to see diapers and diaper rash cream as
something adults don't need, but we all know that's not always
true. I'm getting over any shame in wearing diapers, and of course

Please don't let your age and cultural attitudes about age keep you
from looking for preventable causes or contributing factors.
Incontinence can be a symptom of other conditions with health
consequences that could be reduced if identified now.

Have you tried going to a good chiropractor? A pinched nerve somewhere
could be contributing to both problems. Doctors will seldom suggest
this. Osteopaths are doctors who are both medical and have training in
resolving skeletal issues.

Take care,
Jack

Yes, society tells us to see diapers and diaper rash cream as

I agree -- time for a new doctor. I've also reached a point where
I've been very disappointed in my primary provider. I've been
dealing with what is best described as "mystery pain" in the left
side of my body, along with incontinence (which has gotten worse by
the way). She keeps sending me to a neurologist, who has found
nothing wrong with me, and in fact told me that my arm pain may be
from an inflamed shoulder (great, now what about my leg?). Neither
has ever taken my incontinence seriously.

I don't know what's wrong. It can't be nothing -- if you're 32,
have pain like this and wear diapers, there's something going on! I
have an appointment with a different neurologist coming up...we'll
see.

I know some don't want to hear this, but your doctor was right about
a couple of things. First -- those times when you can't hold it are
what the pads are for. Secondly, if you have a diaper rash, then
diaper rash cream will help. The whole point of any protection is
so that you can get on with other things in your life. To me, I'd
rather go ahead and use it than spend my life running from bathroom
to bathroom and worrying if I'll make it. And if pads don't cut it,
wear diapers! There's no shame in doing so if you need to, and
nobody will even notice.

Yes, society tells us to see diapers and diaper rash cream as

Well This sounds like My Last Urologist vist, My doctor told me that
I am incontent, but can't find nothing wrong with me and tells me to
try meds, The meds have made it worse and tells me not to drink more
then one glass of water in a day, Well I am a very active person, I
burn about 10,000-15,000 calories a day, and I can't drink more then
one glass of water, I think he thinks that it will stop my wetting
everytime I ride my bicycle, or if I am walking, and sleeping, Wrong
it doesn't and he tells me that there is not much more to do for
me. Let me tell you more about myself I am 6"2' 156 Pounds which is
under my normal weight, I am disabled. I suffer from Manic
Depressive disorder, I was Molested by 9 men and one women from the
age of 2 to 17. They tell me that my mental age is that of a 12
year old, and I was born 3 months premature, Which I was never
supposed to be out of diapers. I am now 25 and I think that
everything as caught up to me. The doctors still say there is
nothing wrong with me, and I wish there is something to do about
it. I have a feeling when I am dead then that is when they are
going to find out that there was really something wrong. I can't
hold my pee for more the a minute, and I always have bowel leakage,
Does this sound normal. My doctor thinks so.
Sorry for getting off track, but I thought you guys should know.

Dear Cheryle Ann.

The one thing taat jumps out at me in your letter is the constant burning. That dosent sound good to me. This so called doctor "basicly said it all" when he said: "I dont know that much about the female anatomy". Be very carefull with the pills. Some pills help with one thing, but are a disaster to other vital organs.
The only thing that he said that really makes any sense to me, is to see a OB doctor.
Yes, Yes Yes! go to a female specialist.
The fact that your mom was in the doctors office with you tells me that you are young. Having an incontent problem for 12 years is no picnic especially when you seek romance.
It took quite a few realationships till I found my wife. The fear of having a spouse who will be in diapers for the rest of his life scares off alot of people. Thats why you must get this resolved now. Anyway that was seventeen years ago. Now we have three kids. Which some days is no blessing! "smiling". No' actually I love my wife dearly....the kids too. "really smiling".
I hope I was some kind of help. Or just made you smile. Please feel free to reply.
Best regards. Eric

Subject: [Incont] Very frustrated after urologist visit

Went to see my urologist for the second time yesterday and I am so frustrated and depressed! He did a cystoscopy, which I did not know he was planning to do in advance, but I went ahead and went through with it.
He gave me the results just after. Said my bladder is very small because I could only hold about 6 ounces of water that they put in before I said I felt like I had to go. Said my bladder lining and everything else looked fine. Don't see how he can say that if he did not put me under and overfill my bladder to look at the lining more closely, do you?
He also said I have what looks like a diaper rash in my genital area that could be causing the constant burning feeling all the time, whether I have to go to the bathroom or not, but he did not know what would cause the irritation to begin with. Gee....don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure that one out. I have mild to moderate incontinence so have to wear pads all the time...DUH. Any recommendations about how to keep things dry down there and clean under the circumstances? He said I could use diaper rash cream and that might help.
Basically he gave me the royal brush off. He said that I will probably just have to learn to live with the leakage because medication has not helped much. Lots of people have to learn to live their lives in pads or diapers and just get on with things and he suggested I do the same! Excuse me? Not only that but he made the suggestion that I could lessen the leakage simply by cutting way down on my fluid intake, to about 3 glasses a day. I have NEVER heard a doctor recommend that!
I have my doubts about the size of my bladder because I constantly feel like I have to go and have constant burning feeling so when he was filling my bladder he told me to let him know when I started feeling like I had to go. I kept telling him I burn and feel like that all the time but he just could not understand why.
He recommended that I see an ob/gyn because my periods are irregular and my uterus could be filling up and pressing against the bladder. I asked him if going back on the Pill would help lessen the leakage and he said he didn't know because he really doesn't know that much about female anatomy!
He did give me a prescription for elmiron to try and is going to overfill my bladder under anesthesia in about 2 months. Should I ask him to look at the inside of my bladder again while I am under? Anybody else "burn" constantly?
I am really down today. I have no life outside of the house. Even when I drink very little I still have to make bathroom trips....My Mom was in the office with me and she told him how often I have to use the bathroom and his only comment was that that is what bladder pads are for....if she feels like she has to go and can't get to the bathroom, just pee on the pad! I really wonder how he would feel if I were to tell him that and he were in my shoes?
I have lived with incontinence for over 12 years and did fine, but the frequency and burning are new and driving me nuts. I just pray the elmiron helps somehow. I also take detrol for the leakage. Any advice on how to handle things would be appreciated, especially about getting rid of the rash, keeping clean and dealing with the burning. It is a struggle just to get out of bed every day because I know what the day will be like. I am just so tired.

Cheryle Ann, another thing that might assist you in your treatment.  I do not know whether your Doctors are male or female, but in my experience a female Dr. seems to be more receptive and understanding to bladder problems than do males.  I have a female general physician and a male urologist that was recommended by her.  With her recommendation I followed through with the new urologist after a bad experience with a previous one.  Her recommendation was right on target.  He is understanding and very good at what he does. He performed the same procedure that you had and the other Dr. had performed and it went off without a hitch. We here do understand your predicament and can honestly empathize.  Most if not all of us wear some form of protection daily whether for bladder or bowel problems. We wish you well and in echo of others, find a new Dr. and maybe a female that would deff. understand your anatomy and possibly be more understanding of the situation.  keep your chin up and your eyes ahead, wear the protection that you need and I can assure you that when in public people will not even notice.

Your understanding Friend
Alan :-)  Smile it takes less energy

I also have incontinence and had a lot of test to find out what was

I'd have to agree with the other folks who have answered, and
suggest that it's time to fire that doc and find a
gyno-urologist. Any urologist that doesn't know enough about
female anatomy to do proper diagnosis isn't one I'd be
comfortable seeing. Remenber, YOU pay him for his expertise,
and if he lacks, YOU can fire him and hire a different one!

No, I'd not say that at all. Normal for the exam is exactly
that, normal for the status. You had already said you
weren't expecting a cysto. Obviously you weren't expecting
general anesthesia, either.

I like to use a 1% hydrocortisone ointment, such as a generic
version of Cortisone 10. The small dose of cortisone helps
rid me of the irritation, and the ointment helps keep
moisture from my skin. I usually clear up within a day to
two.

That sounds much more like some type of inflamatory
situation, perhaps a UTI. Constant urgency and burning are
certainly not nomral, and should have some treatment options.
I hope he did a culture and sensitivity on your urine, and
perhaps offered you one of the urinary analgesics such as
pyridium.

BINGO! You're fired, hire a good Gynourologist.!

I'd leave that for another doc to do. If he doesn't
understand female anatomy, I'd certainly not trust him to do
a peek-and-poke on me!

Time to use more than pads, I'd suggest. There's nothing
wrong with wearing a full diaper when it's needed, and it
sounds to me like you need em! Believe me, nobody else knows
or CARES what your underwear looks like.

It also sounds like you have some depression! The doc should
address that aspect of your life as well, and perhaps you
should consider seeing a mental health professional also. I
had very intense depression due to circumstances, a
situational depression, and got good help from a
psychologist. That's what they're there for!

Hope this helps some.

My recommendation would be to go visit another doctor. There are ob/gyns who specialize in (female-obviously) patients with incontinence issues - mine's one of them.

I would also suggest (if you haven't done so) switching to 100% cotton undies and a very mild detergent (like ivory snow). I used to have rashes a lot as well, and that helped combat the problem.

Subj: [Incont] Very frustrated after urologist visit

Went to see my urologist for the second time yesterday and I am so frustrated and depressed! He did a cystoscopy, which I did not know he was planning to do in advance, but I went ahead and went through with it.

Cheryle Ann,  It's not normal to suddenly go from no burning sensation to a constant burning.  I would suggest going to the OB/GYN as he or she is a specialist in female anatomy and may be able to assist further with the leakage etc..  As far as the diaper rash goes, I rarely have any problems, this is what I've done:  I'm clean shaven as it assist with hygiene from day to day and makes it easier to apply lotion, creams, forms of moisture barriers and powder as well.  Showering twice daily and changing wet diapers etc. as soon as is possible.  Using baby wipes or cottonell cleansing clothes between changes also assist  in keeping the rashes down to minimal or nothing at all.  I had the procedure you describe done many years ago when I first began to have bladder problems and had to relieve myself in front of the dr. and assistant due to not being able to hold back.  I had emptied my bladder for a pressure test 1 hour earlier and was now on the table with pants down and tubes in place. I with him pumping water into my bladder. I told him I had to go and wouldn't be able to wait.  The assistant handed me a portable urinal and I all but overflowed it with 750 ml of urine.  The dr. said that I was to young for protection and my bladder was just reacting to all the water he pushed in.  I looked at the sterile water container he was pumping in and only 50 ml was gone?   Let me see now,  50 in 750 out?  wonder where it all came from, the uro fairy?  I've been on Detrol ever since and have to wear protection of some sort the majority of the time. When I have to go I really have to go.  I have since changed urologist and family physicians.  PS: Enjoy life and don't let diapers, pads or whatever protection you chose slow you down or make you ashamed of who you are.  We are all different and because someone can't see well and uses glasses, what is any different with someone who can't control their bladder and needs protection?  What of someone in a wheelchair or an amputee etc..  Only those that have never had opportunities, and I say opportunities due to it's not a problem, it's a chance to overcome and just make a slight change in your lifestyle etc..  Think positive and carry on with life as we all will face many challenging opportunities in life :-)

Sincerely,
Your Friend
Alan :-)
