Not sure if there is any 'normal' number. It depends on your own situation. My urologist has me cath twice a day. I have to wear a diaper 24/7, so I cath once in the morning and once at night. This is to be sure my bladder fully empties. Tom

I do cath myself.
I am supposed to do it 4-6 times a day.  I don't always remember or am too lazy. Then I am not dry :-(

I do have to wear diapers at night, though, and during the day when I don't think I can find a way/place to cath.

I had a radical prostectomy last July and had to wear a catheter for a month after wards. I did not like them at all and will choose a diaper any day over a catheter. I got a UTI and was fortunately cured with anti biotic's. Catheters are very dangerous and if there is any way you can get away with wearing a diaper instead of a catheter that is the healthy choice to take in my opinion.

I never thought about using a Pamper as a booster inside my diaper! That sounds like a cool idea. I remember the smell they had as a baby.  Do they still have that same smell? Thay have size 7 now?  I had to go to wings when i outgrew size 5 (when I was about 6 years old).

Self catheterization is not bad, but there can be complications if one is not careful with cleaning and sterilty. Men or women can first cleanse the ureathral opening with betadine and a cotton Qtip. Using washed hands and gloves lubricate the opening and catheter. Keeping the catheter slightly in the sterile package open the ureathral opening slightly with one hand and using a clean gloved hand on the package slightly push the catheter inward. It will slide in easily for men and a little more difficulty for women. Once started the men will vary in depth insertion dependent upon length. Women will be approx 4-6 inches. Either will feel the catheter pushing against the ureathral spinchter and will have to push past this slightly as then the catheter will enter the lower bladder. An intermittent catheter will begin to drain as will a Foley. The intermittent can be slowly removed after the bladder is emptied. The Foley can the have the balloon inflated with a syringe minus the needle and sterile water. The Foley should be pushed slightly higher into the bladder prior to inflation and once inflated slightly pulled back down until the slight pressure is felt on the spinchter. The bag connection can be made prior to or after insertion and inflation. The problem with removal of the Foley compared the intermittent is one is completely smooth and after inflation/deflation of the Foley bulb there will be more resistance during removal plenty of sterile lubrication and cleanliness will assist in insertion and removal. To much removals of Foley can build up some scar tissue and it is normal to have a burning sensation a day or two after removal. The use of betadine prior to insertion slightly in and around the ureathral opening is a key to killing germs and bacteria that can cause UTI. If I use Foley with bag for long trips flights etc. Then I only use 1 day at a time to assist in reducing or as the case has been not getting UTI at all. Hope this information has assisted. Have a great day and may all be blessed :-). Alan H. PS: if you wear a diaper with catheter in place for slow drainage compared to a flood it may assist the UTI in forming due to bacteria being able to travel from the moisture area back up the catheter. If this is done with a diaper it should be for short periods only.

    Hi Steve:
I have urge incontinence and also experience "after dripping" each time I
urinate. Therefore, I use either incontinece feminine pads or male guards in
my underwear. At times I will use a male guard to bulk up my bed time
disposable diaper. I think more and more men are facing the fact that they need
protection and are starting to use these products.
