Amy Brown Gaghagen made the following statement:  Greetings and welcome to the 5th Annual Members Meeting of the International Vasa Previa Foundation.

President Report 2005:

The International Vasa Previa Foundation, Inc. (IVPF) has remained active in raising vasa previa awareness in the general public as well as the medical community throughout 2005.  In fact, the IVPF has become known as an authority on vasa previa and physicians and patients alike have contacted the foundation regarding research and information.  As the foundation had an integral involvement in the study, "Vasa Previa: The Impact of Prenatal Diagnosis on Outcomes", The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (May 2004), this document proved essential for encouraging the awareness of both the IVPF and vasa previa.

The IVPF attended multiple medical conferences in 2005 and intends to continue attending these important types of events, with multiple conferences worldwide up for consideration in 2006.  The IVPF, along with Philips, sponsored the Fetal Medicine Foundation of America Meeting in December in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. In addition, the foundation sponsored 2 hospital in-service events.

Work in the IVPF committees has been impressive. IVPF members working through our committees continue to address local changes in a number of countries, and substantial momentum has been achieved by members in the UK. An assistant secretary has been acquired, proving to be a valuable asset to the foundation. It was notable that siblings of a vasa previa victim earned the IVPF Humanitarian Service Award for their school projects on vasa previa.  The foundation acquired the web addresses of IVPF.org and SophiesWalk.org.  As noted by president of the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, and a director of the AIUM, it appears as though the USA is well on its way to establishing national ultrasound standards for vasa previa, all thanks to the work done by the IVPF members.  People from over a dozen different countries have contacted the IVPF for vasa previa information, and the survival rate is 20% higher than when the IVPF was founded according to the research on our data.  We now have over 1000 contacts in our database.  The 3rd Annual Sophie's Walk for Vasa Previa took place in August, and other private fundraisers were held throughout the year for the foundation.  The IVPF received a fair amount of local and international press for Sophie’s Walk.  Important awareness is generated by these events.  A major project still in development is an awareness mailing to hospitals in the USA, Canada, and the UK. This project is to be completed in 2006, with future plans to expand this project to other countries.

The International Vasa Previa Foundation’s presence is becoming well known worldwide, and respect for this foundation is blossoming.

Research Committee Report 2005:

·        Data was compiled from internet statistics on demographics of visitors to the IVPF website and questionnaire submissions.  The data showed website hits to originate from at least a dozen countries, specifically 67% from North America, 22% from Europe, 5% from Asia, and 3% from Australia.

·        Data was compiled on statistics regarding prenatally diagnosed survivors vs. undiagnosed survivors showing that 66% of people contacting the IVPF have vasa previa survivors, only half of whom were prenatally diagnosed.  This data also showed that the survival rate observed by the IVPF has increased 20% in the last 4 years.

·        Website stats show that the press kit is the most downloaded item from the IVPF site.  The IVPF statement on risk factors, testing and management was next, followed by the IVPF brochure.

MEMBER QUESTIONS, COMMENTS AND ADDITIONAL ACTIONS:

·        Victoria Goldstein made the following comments:  I'd like to comment that as usual we are sorely short of members for the committees.  Anyone with ideas on how to recruit members for the committees, ideas are welcome!  I’d like to see some of the other participating members who are so gung ho lately working in the committees!  Education, research and fundraising need the most help”

·        Karen Peters made the following comment:  If we list specific tasks, perhaps we could get people to do one or 2 tasks rather than "heading something up" which may scare them off at first.”

·        Jeannette Schwartz made the following comment:  I like the idea about listing specific tasks.  Perhaps in an email appeal we could list the tasks.”

·        Cindy Paris made the following comments:  It’s pretty simple actually. Call meetings, report and gain approval for proposed projects from EXEC and write up minutes.  As long as there are active volunteers in each committee, the work load shouldn't be any more than that.”  She added:  “I'd like to personally thank Jeannette for all her hard work and initiative and patience! She's been a huge help to me and has helped the organization along in tax and grant issues, plus other administrative duties'.”

·        Jeannette Schwartz was awarded the coveted IVPF Humanitarian Service Award.

·        Amy Gaghagen made the following announcement: “Jeannette, you have been awarded the coveted Humanitarian Award by the Executive Committee. Congratulations and thank you so much for your continued hard work for the International Vasa Previa Foundation!  We are honored and especially blessed to have your help within the IVPF.”

·        Deb Pederson added:  Especially considering what Cindy has on her plate, the help you have been to her is invaluable!!!!!

·        Jeannette Schwartz made the following closing comment: “Thank you sooo much!  I am very honored!  I wish the IVPF continued success in all its efforts and applaud all that you guys have accomplished thus far.”

There being no further questions, comments, or business to come before this Annual Members Meeting of the International Vasa Previa Foundation, the President adjourned the meeting at 17:08 GMT (11:08 AM CST).

The next regular IVPF Annual Members Meeting is tentatively scheduled take place on Monday, 24 January 2007. The exact time and location will be announced at a later date.
