NIH is inviting health professionals engaged in biomedical and behavioral research to apply online for a loan repayment award. The loan repayment programs (LRPs) are a vital component of our nation’s efforts to recruit and retain highly qualified professionals to careers in research.
NIH annually awards loan repayment contracts to approximately 1,600 health professionals with an average award of $52,000. More than 50% of the awards are made to individuals less than 5 years out of school. Approximately 40% of all new applicants are funded and 70% of renewals are funded.
The LRP application cycle is open through December 1. NIH will repay up to $35,000 annually of qualified educational debt for health professionals pursuing careers in one of the five Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs). The programs also provide coverage for Federal and state tax liabilities.
To qualify, applicants must possess a doctoral-level degree, devote an average
of 20 hours per week or more to research funded by a non-profit organization, university, or government entity (NIH grant support is not required). Applicants must also have outstanding educational loan debt equal to at least 20% of their institutional base salary and be U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Please share this e-mail with the researchers in your organization who may benefit from LRP participation.
All applications for 2008 awards must be submitted online by 8:00 p.m. EST, December 1, 2007.
To access the online application or for program information, please visit the LRP Web site at www.lrp.nih.gov. For assistance call the Helpline at 866.849.4047 or send email inquiries to lrp@....

Dear friends,

It is the residency application season again and I would be grateful if anyone could kindly assist me to get me an interview by
referring me to any program director/coordinator in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine residency programs. Hope this could be a start to unite and support each other the same as Indian doctors do. I am sure you have witnessed how successful the Indian Doctors society are in USA and the reason is such a great support and empathy about themselves.
Having passed the USMLE step 3, I believe I can not do more and the rest is the matter of a referral to get an interview.

MSF and Bernard Kouchner - How Neo-Cons use humanitarianism to take over
countries and prepare for war
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070916/wl_nm/iran_france_war_dc;_ylt=AusShwY2WVr3.a\

It is vitally important to start a media campaign against Mr. Kouchner's
unacceptable abuse MSF/AZG name.
Bernard Kouchner used his supposed deep involvement with MSF to portray
himself as a humanist and work his way into the decision making bodies of
the French government despite the fact that MSF had distanced itself from
him in the past in not so amicable terms.
Mr. Kouchner was removed from MSF because of his stubborn and media-oriented
approach instead of the usual humanistic and patient centered policies of
MSF. Already at the time, the suspicion existed that he might have a double
or hidden agenda. Despite the fact that this suspicion turned out to be true
and that Mr. Kouchner shamelessly has used his defunct bonds with MSF to
further a neo-Conservascist agenda in France, MSF has been keeping a low
profile and this is unacceptable.
Currently, Mr. Kouchner is using his new position to advocate war and
murder, it is time for MSF to publicly distance itself from Kouchner and ask
for his removal from the role of French Medical Order.

Louis Kuritzky, MD Gainesville, Florida lkuritzky@...
JAMA. 2007;298:1137.
As far back as I can remember, the acquisition of knowledgehas been a prized commodity in my family. My father never finishedhigh school: in 1932, the loss of his own
father required thatmy dad—then 14 years old, the oldest of 5 children, andnot yet having completed the seventh grade—take on therole of breadwinner. My mom was the "educated one" in the family, since she had completed the 7th grade, shortly after which difficulteconomic situations in her own family required her assistancein the family boarding house, relegating school to the categoryof "less necessary."
After several years of successfully selling vegetables off atruck on local street corners, Dad parlayed his industriouslygenerated profits into a small delicatessen, which became thesource of our family sustenance throughout the launching ofall four sons into the world. Although each of us worked inthe deli as soon as we were old enough to provide any meaningfulservice (usually beginning about age 7 or
8), Dad's consistentmessage was "Education, boys: that's what will make your paththe most secure. Knowledge is the key . . . knowledge.Don't end up slicing salami for the rest of your life like yourdad!" Neither of my parents ever took a course in calculus,or music lessons, or dancing lessons, or any of the many otherextracurricular activities for which they had had to struggleto provide for me and my three brothers during our growing-upyears.
If Dad ever read a novel, I don't recall it. Mostly, he wasso tired at the end of the day (the deli's hours were 8 AM to11 PM Monday through Saturday; Sunday, 9 AM to 10 PM) that hewould fall asleep in a chair in the living room with the newspaperfolded on his lap. Mom was
an avid reader, and she shared hersuggestions about good books for me to read. She was an enthusiasticsupporter of my growing appreciation of literature, reviewingmy grade-school book reports with glowing approbation. Althoughit was delivered in distinctly different flavors, reverencefor knowledge is what both of my parents shared, and they pouredit generously into their children.
I have been an academic physician for a long, long time—morethan 30 years. Even though I still delight in learning, andin observing the progress of medicine and science, and eventhough the persistent counsel of my long-departed parents toseek knowledge stays with me to this day, sometimes I, too, need a reminder, which I found can arrive in an unexpected way.
I often give educational presentations to colleagues. On oneparticular occasion recently, I was scheduled to present a dinnerlecture at a very large continuing medical education meetingin California. I had considered attending a morning lectureentitled "Hypogonadism in the Midlife Male," but when I sawthe start time was 6:30 AM, I reconsidered. Nonetheless, becauseI was in California, but live in Florida, I woke up at 5 AManyway, so I decided, ‘What the heck. I’ll go!"
When I entered the auditorium about 6:15 AM, I took a seat nextto a very, well, "noticeable" gentleman. I would guess him tobe about 45 years old; he was bald, with numerous prominenttattoos, and dressed in some sort of camouflage-fatigue outfit . . . notthe typical "look" for a physician. We didn't speak, both ofus paying some
attention to the handout notes about the soon-to-beginpresentation. Promptly at the conclusion of the lecture, I hurriedout to the next lecture.
My own presentation at this CME course was scheduled for 6:30PM. When I entered the lecture hall, on my way to the podium, who did I see but the same guy who had been sitting next tome earlier that morning. Intending to enjoy some collegial teasing,I blurted out, "What are you doing here? Didn't I see you hereat the crack of dawn? You must have gotten up at 4 in the morningjust to get here. You must know just about everything by now!"
The man turned toward me and smiled graciously. In a very heavyaccent he said, "Learning is a privilege. In my country, onecannot always learn all the things one would wish to know. Learningis a
privilege."
I don't remember what I said in response; maybe I just nodded. But as his words sank in, I was feeling a strong sense of nostalgicreminiscence about similar words from my parents. Sometimes, living in a land of such plenty, we don't remember to appreciateit. You know the sort of feeling that you experience when you’vejust gotten over a head cold and can finally breathe normallyagain, and you feel an intense appreciation of how nice it isto just be able to breathe normally? This colleague remindedme how easy it is to take for granted all of the opportunitieswe have for learning and for sharing knowledge. His words struckhome in such a way that I had to take a mental step back andacknowledge my own need to reawaken my appreciation for theprivilege of learning.
Perhaps it is reverence for
knowledge that has fostered so manyof my happy years of teaching medicine. And in medicine, onehas the luxurious pleasure of being surrounded by many otherswho share that reverence. But sometimes, despite our reverencefor knowledge, we forget; in a land of intellectual plenty,it's good to be reminded from time to time: Learning is a privilege.

A friend mailed about Mehrega Celebration In Southern California. More than
10'000 people participated in the celebration last year. I believe Mehregan
Celebration in Orange County is the largest Mehregan Festival world wide.
My friend and collegue thought it's nice if we can offer limited medical
services at Mehregan (like checking the Blood Cholesterol, BS, BP, screening
for glaucoma, possible massage by chiropractors or any other services that
physicians could offer) It would be a good opportunity for the volunteer
physicians to get recognized by the participants in the festival also. UCI
provides some limited services like checking BP, flu shots etc every year
also.
If anyone is interested, please contact Dr Vesali at faribav@... with
any questions, suggestions or voluntering.
Yours sincerely, Amir Shoja.

Dear Dr. Salimi,
I think having lawyer friends is very helpful. I used internet search to search for employment or discrimination lawyers http://www.lawyers.com/Discrimination/Louisiana/browse-by-city.html . Generally the people on the top of the food chain have stronger network, so the chance of winning litigation is small I guess. I hope that you are doing
great.

it. I was thinking of making you moderator of this listserve if you're willing.
