NIH is inviting health professionals engaged in biomedical and behavioral research to apply online for a loan repayment award. The loan repayment programs (LRPs) are a vital component of our nation’s efforts to recruit and retain highly qualified professionals to careers in research.
NIH annually awards loan repayment contracts to approximately 1,600 health professionals with an average award of $52,000. More than 50% of the awards are made to individuals less than 5 years out of school. Approximately 40% of all new applicants are funded and 70% of renewals are funded.
The LRP application cycle is open through December 1. NIH will repay up to $35,000 annually of qualified educational debt for health professionals pursuing careers in one of the five Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs). The programs also provide coverage for Federal and state tax liabilities.
To qualify, applicants must possess a doctoral-level degree, devote an average of 20 hours per week or more to research funded by a non-profit organization, university, or government entity (NIH grant support is not required). Applicants must also have outstanding educational loan debt equal to at least 20% of their institutional base salary and be U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Please share this e-mail with the researchers in your organization who may benefit from LRP participation.
All applications for 2009 awards must be submitted online by 8:00 p.m. EST, December 1, 2008.
To access the online application or for program information, please visit the LRP Web site at www.lrp.nih.gov. For assistance call the Helpline at 866.849.4047 or send email inquiries to lrp@....

Dear Amir Shoja,

I think I've provided you with enough information.  As an educated adult, you should be able to take it from there and do the rest of the research yourself.  You're making much too much work for me.

I get the feeling that you are having trouble understanding what I have written or maybe you simply enjoy arguing.  Your responses seem to have little relevance to what I wrote so I will summarize:

1 - I agree that money used to publish the bulletin should be saved.  How much depends on how many members want to receive the publication vs read it online.  Personally, I would enjoy reading the bulletin online.  However, I can understand that some members may be more comfortable with a paper copy.

2 - IAMA, like any successful organization, should prioritize building a strong financial reserve over spending for any particular project.  We should be planning for the future, not just today.  Once a reserve has been established, then even more projects can be funded and more charitable work can be done.  It seems as soon as the idea of saving money comes up, everyone starts e-mailing about how to spend the money.  This isn't financially smart.

3 - I am in no way involved and never have been involved in running IAMA.  I am simply a member.  I have no role in deciding what is debated or not debated at any meeting.  I don't understand what you mean by "I am sure that no one is in favour of stifling debate through legalism."  But then again, I don't understand most of what you are writing.

Anyway, I will conclude my discussion with you and offer you a thought from JFK - Ask not what IAMA can do for you all the time... Ask what you can do for IAMA...

As you are so in tune with the law and have a thorough understanding of it,
would you be so kind as to email me the relevant and correct link in regards
to the investment banking by charitable foundations, you sent me the link in
regards to Jeopardizing IRS Exemption.

In your absolute knowledge of the law, would you be so kind as to inform me
on whether the mentioning of your website www.ganchi.com in your mass email
to all of us would be considered free publicity through IAMA for a
commercial activity and in contradiction with section 501(c)(3) charitable
organization information you provided
(http://www.irs.gov/charities/charitable/article/0,,id=123299,00.html)?

Beside that point, what is at stake is the role and the content of our
organization. As 78% of those who voted pointed out, there is a strong
desire to not waste money on paper. I am sure that you have the same
tendencies towards democracy as Dr. Ganchi Sr. and hope you will at the
very least accept a debate in this regard during our coming IAMA meeting. I
am sure that no one is in favour of stifling debate through legalism.

Your point on spell checker is well taken, I will email Yahoo and ask them
to install a multi-langual Dutch, French, English and Persian spellchecker
in order not to overburden your eyes with my typos.

Sincerely yours, Amir Shoja.

I would like to plead with the IAMA Central Board to repeal their decision
to spend 32.000 $ to print a newsletter for IAMA.

It would be cheaper and more efficient to put the magazine online. If a
middle way is to be sought, I propose that members pay an extra contribution
if they want a paper version of the magazine that can be sent to them
post-hoc.

I know at least 4 hard working and productive Iranians physicians who are
living with minimal provisions and doing excellent research. If we avoid
wasting of the half of the 32.000 $, we would be able to give 10 physicians
an allowence of 500$ a month to be repaid once they have a sustainable
income.

I know that the Board of IAMA has vision and guts and would consider my
proposal.

Yours sincerely, Amir Shoja.

Today,

I heard from an Indian friend that there are several websites where one can
post one's CV if one is lookign specifically for J-1 waiver jobs.
He could not immediately fill me in regarding the address of those websites.
Would you all be kind enough to look out for those websites and forward them
to me for IAMA records?

Yours sincerely, Amir Shoja.

Postdoctoral Position - Health Sciences Research

Summary
Investigator: Peter Li, PhD
Summary
Division of Biomedical Informatics has two postdoctoral research associate positions available for immediate appointment. The positions are part of a bioinformatics research program under the direction of Peter Li, Ph.D. The near-term goal of this program is to address the fundamental aspects of mining "omics" data and their related biological models. This involves the development of better analytic approaches as well as better data abstraction and integration techniques. With improved methodologies, the program will also tackle the next level challenges of knowledge representation and deployment. The long-term goal is to focus on translational and individualized medicine through these novel bioinformatics and systems approaches. These efforts are core to the development of an integrated scientific and clinical environment at the Mayo Clinic. As junior faculty in the program, the research associate will be expected to assume important roles in the program: guiding other team members to successful research milestones, establishing collaboration with basic science and clinical researchers, mentoring postdoctoral fellows and students, and developing new directions for future research.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate should have a PhD in bioinformatics/computational biology or a related field. Preference will be given to applicants with significant research experience in bioinformatics and demonstrated research aptitude. The diversity of subject matter will require a creative mind, deploying imaginative strategies, with dedication to solving complex and challenging problems. Applicants should be highly motivated and flexible, with excellent communication skills, and work well with people.

Postdoctoral Position - Anastasiadis Lab (Cell Adhesion and Metastasis)

Summary
Investigator: Kun Ling, Ph.D. Assistant Professor
One or two postdocs positions are open for a newly established laboratory. We are interested in the molecular mechanism underlying cell adhesion and migration, and how these would relate to embryogenesis, wound healing, and human diseases such as cancer metastasis. Our current major focus is to investigate how type Igamma phosphatidylinositol phosphate kinase (PIPKIgamma), which generates phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate, regulates cell adhesion and migration, and participates in the relevant life events. Multidisciplinary approaches including molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and genetics are used to address our research objectives. The postdoctoral fellow(s) will join several ongoing projects to define the role of PIPKIgamma in cancer metastasis, angiogenesis, and wound healing.
Ph.D. degree in cell biology or biochemistry is required. Candidates with experience of fluorescence live imaging or mouse model will be preferred.
