FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM IN TRANSPLANT NEPHROLOGY
2008

The Division of Nephrology at the University of Washington offers an accredited training program in transplant nephrology. Completion of this fellowship will provide the individual with the qualifications to be a UNOS-approved medical director of a kidney transplant program. One transplant fellow is accepted per year; the fellowship duration is one year.

Goals
The goal of the University of Washington transplant nephrology program is to provide in-depth experience in transplant patient care associated with a comprehensive didactic program. Inpatient and outpatient care will include post operative management of kidney and kidney/pancreas recipients, participation in liver, lung and heart transplant consultation and outpatient evaluation of post transplant recipients, living donors and recipient candidates. Lectures will be provided by basic and clinical scientists on immunology, pharmacology, obstetrics, diabetes, metabolic bone disease and infectious disease topics to be included along with sessions on post operative and maintenance transplant care.

Objectives
1. To learn transplant recipient evaluation and management
2. To become well versed in the short- and long-term complications and management of the transplant recipient
3. To become experienced in outpatient management of kidney | and pancreas transplant recipients.
4. Perform kidney and pancreas transplant candidate evaluations
5. Perform kidney transplant donor evaluations
6. Perform kidney transplant biopsies
7. Interpret kidney transplant biopsy histology
8. Interpret transplant ultrasound studies
9. Gain expertise in the renal evaluation of non-renal transplant recipients with kidney disease

Clinical Program
Location: University of Washington Medical Center
Year transplant program started: 1968
Transplants: On average, 100 kidney and kidney pancreas transplants per year
Inpatient care: 10 months of the year
Outpatient care: 12 months of the year
Schedule: Post-transplant clinic twice a week, new evaluations once a week, long-term follow up clinic once a week.
Selection Conference: The fellow will participate in the weekly review of transplant and donor candidates.
Didactic Program
Formal lectures on transplant topics will be provided during weekly two-hour sessions over 6 months. The topics will include: basic immunology, infectious diseases, medical issues as they relate to transplant care, metabolic bone disease, pharmacology, pathology, obstetrics and surgery.
Conferences will include transplant grand rounds weekly, journal club once a month, a monthly case review during nephrology clinical rounds and a monthly lecture during general nephrology lecture series.

Research
All fellows are expected to complete a clinical project resulting in a manuscript submission. Research can be performed with nephrologists, hepatologists, surgeons, pathologists, pediatric nephrologists, the HLA laboratory or with other collaborative practitioners or scientists.
Application Requirements: Candidates are considered and accepted on the basis of their overall qualifications
1. US M.D. Degree
2. US board certified or US board eligible in Nephrology
3. Eligible for medical licensure in the state of Washington
Salary range: Fellow candidate will be paid on the national R-level salary scale.
