DescriptionHenry Ford Hospital Department of Anesthesiology offers a one-year ACGME approved cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship for graduates of ACGME accredited Anesthesiology Residency Programs. The program, started in 2006, has a single position available annually for applicants interested in advanced training in this exciting field. Henry Ford is a 903 bed nationally renowned specialty care, teaching and research institution that is the flagship of Henry Ford Health System. Affiliated with the Wayne State University School of Medicine, Henry Ford Hospital is one of the oldest and largest teaching hospitals in the country. More than 600 residents and fellows and more than 500 third- and fourth-year medical students from schools locally and across the country train here each year. The cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship consists of six months of adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology, one month of adult thoracic anesthesiology, one month of transesophageal echocardiography and one month of cardiothoracic intensive care. In addition to these requirements, we offer electives in pediatric cardiac anesthesiology at the Children's Hospital of Michigan, cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, perfusion and heart failure. The cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellow plays an integral role in the care of patients presenting for cardiothoracic surgery, including both resident supervision and direct patient care. We have a well developed fellow level didactic program with special emphasis on intra-operative echocardiography and advanced topics in cardiac anesthesia and critical care. The Henry Ford Hospital Cardiothoracic Surgery Division performs approximately five hundred open heart surgeries a year, including heart and lung transplantation, adult congenital surgery, ventricular assist device placement, thoracic aortic procedures with and without circulatory arrest, as well as the full gamut of valve and coronary revascularization procedures. In addition they perform approximately 250 non-cardiac thoracic procedures annually. Our fellows receive extensive training in intra-operative echocardiography from our experienced staff of cardiothoracic anesthesiologists. All fellows are expected to perform and observe the requisite 300 TEE exams necessary for National Board of Echocardiography certification by the completion of training.
