DescriptionAccepting applications for 2010-2011The MGH Pain Management Fellowship is available to anesthesiologists and other medical specialists who have successfully completed a residency and are board certified or eligible for examination by their specialty board. Our program is ACGME-accredited and designed to provide a multidisciplinary exposure to Pain Medicine. Fellows are exposed to ample clinical and didactic teaching in areas of acute, chronic and cancer pain. They gain experience in pharmacologic, behavioral, and interventional approaches to pain management. The Massachusetts General Hospital Pain Fellowship is a twelve-month program. Three months are spent on the inpatient service caring for patients with acute post-operative pain. Two weeks during this rotation are spent at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. The fellows spend three months on the cancer pain service and four months in the outpatient pain clinic. Each fellow has four weeks of vacation and four weeks of elective time per year. An additional twelve months of training in either basic science and/or clinical research is possible based on interest and performance. The MGH Pain Management staff consists of eight attendings, six clinical fellows, three to four residents, and four nurses. An attending manages most cases with a resident and/or fellow. The MGH Pain Center cares for approximately four thousand patients each year on our acute and chronic services. The fellows have teaching responsibilities in addition to their clinical duties. They give lectures and prepare educational materials for residents and medical students rotating through the MGH Pain Center. The fellows are also given the opportunity to pursue clinical or scientific research if they are interested.
