Highlights of training offered: Excellent and comprehensive clinical, didactic and research training. Training in varied clinical settings, including acute, sub acute, outpatient, nursing home, VA, HMO, home care, palliative care and rehabilitation. Comprehensive experiences in primary care and consultative geriatrics, palliative medicine, rehabilitation and geriatric psychiatry. Very light call schedule for fellows. In the second year, two academic tracks are available: research or clinical educator. For those in the clinician educator track, the medical school's Fellowship in Medical Education can be incorporated into the second year. For those in the research track, excellent training, mentorship and opportunities are available Highlights of the department: .Geriatric Medicine is a full department in the medical school, the fourth in the country to gain department status. There are over 60 faculty members in the department and there is strong interdisciplinary training. Several large epidemiological research programs, including the Honolulu Heart Program, Honolulu-Asia Aging Study, the Women's Health Initiative, and many others. The department has one of seven National Training Centers for Medical Student Aging Research (NIA grant) . Educational grants have regularly been awarded, including a "Center of Excellence in Geriatrics" grant from the John A. Hartford Foundation, a training grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, and the federally funded Pacific Islands Geriatric Education Center. Highlights of Hawaii: The people of Hawaii are of many different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, with no group comprising a majority, providing excellent opportunities for cross-cultural studies. Hawaii enjoys beautiful weather and surroundings. The city of Honolulu offers a rich variety of cultural experiences. We will be accepting applications for academic years 2009 and 2010. How to apply: Prerequisites: board eligible or certified in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine, genuine interest in Geriatric Medicine, USMLE step 3 must be successfully completed prior to starting the fellowship program.
