Description
HYPERACUSIS is a condition of the auditory system that results in a decreased or collapsed tolerance for sounds, including medium loud or even moderately loud sounds.
HYPERACUSIS can strike any person at any age, and often results in painful ears, avoidance of sounds, withdrawal from social or work settings, inability to tolerate normal noises or ambient environments.
HYPERACUSIS was identified and studied in the 1980s by Dr. Pawell Jastreboff and categorized by Marsha Johnson in the late 1990s in an article describing the Johnson Hyperacusis Quotient (the JHQ).
It can often affect normal hearers, or individuals with h. loss. Sound sensitivity can be mild or severe or can fluctuate. It is often associated with tinnitus, but can also be a single symptom.
Much is unknown about the condition. Marsha Johnson has decided to open this Yahoo Hyperacusis Website to share ten years of full time clinical practice and treatment of hyperacusis and tinnitus at the Oregon Tinnitus & Hyperacusis Treatment Clinic. She is grateful to be working with people of all ages from all over the world. The people who come to share and advise one another, are the true 'experts' of hyperacusis in the world!
Feel free to join, welcome. We are here to share and learn together. There are simple therapies and complex therapies that can help improve hyperacusis in most cases.
Welcome!
