Even older mice on restricted diets fare better in research

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A study in mice suggests that a low-calorie diet
could help extend life even if the dietary change doesn't start until
old age. The study, appearing this week in the Proceedings of the
National Academy of Sciences, showed that mice at the relatively
advanced age of 19 months that were placed on a restricted calorie
diet lived 42 percent longer than litter mates who continued to eat a
standard diet.

Other studies have shown that young mice put on a low-calorie diet
live much longer than mice fed the standard fare. But the new research
suggests that it is never too late to enjoy a life-extension benefit
by reducing calories.
Stephen R. Spindler of the University of California, Riverside, leader
of a team conducting the research, said there is little evidence yet
that dietary restrictions will extend human life, but in mice, at
least, sensible eating even at older ages clearly has a longevity
benefit. He said a 19-month-old mouse is the age equivalent of 60 to
65 years in humans.

Spindler said old mice placed on a restricted calorie diet responded
quickly with better health and that eventually the animals lived up to
six months longer than litter mates fed the standard diet.
If such findings translate to humans, he said, "this could mean a lot
more years and a lot of good years. The mice on caloric restriction
lived longer and they are healthier."

Early vs late start
Spindler said that while older mice that go on a diet do live longer
than those that don't, they still don't live as long as mice that have
been on restricted diets for a lifetime. He said mice put on
low-calorie diets just after birth have been known to live up to four
years, almost twice as long as normal mice and months longer than the
aged mice in the new study.

The message, he said, is that sensible eating for a lifetime is best,
but there are life span benefits even if the diet is not started until
old age. "This is a very important finding," said Dr. George S. Roth
of the National Institute on Aging, one of the National Institutes of
Health. "The dogma has always been that the earlier in life you start
a restricted diet, the better it works for extending life," said Roth,
a researcher studying the aging process who was not involved in
Spindler's research. "This finding suggests that you may get some of
the same benefits starting late in life."

Cancer connection
Spindler said the study also found that the restricted-calorie diets
also slowed the development and advancement of cancer. Death from
tumors is very common among aged mice, he said, but the researchers
found that tumor growth either started later or was slowed among mice
fed limited calories.
The researchers also analyzed how the action of genes changed in mice
placed on restricted calorie diets. Spindler said there were changes
and that these might be biomarkers of how the restricted diet works to
extend life.

"People have been searching for 30 years for biomarkers of the changes
that take place during the aging process," said Spindler. He said the
new study in mice suggests that by measuring the amount and type of
proteins made by the genes scientists could pinpoint the biomarkers of
aging. Once those are known, he said, it would be possible to find
drugs that have the same effect on life extension as
calorie-restricted diets.
Does this mean that eventually aging could be slowed by taking a pill?
"I am confident that that day will come," said Spindler.

Study: Dieting Can Weaken Immune System

SEATTLE - A new study has found that "yo-yo dieting" - repeatedly losing, then regaining weight, may harm a woman's immune system. The study by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center also found that maintaining the same weight over time appears to have a positive effect on a woman's immune system, according to one of the lead researchers.

Researchers in the study, published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, interviewed 114 overweight but otherwise healthy sedentary, older women about their weight-loss history during the past 20 years. The women had to have maintained a stable weight for at least three months before joining the study, which was funded by the National Cancer Institute.

The study, which found that long-term immune function decreases in proportion to how many times a woman has intentionally lost weight, measured natural killer cell activity in the women's blood. Natural killer cells are an essential part of the immune system, killing viruses and leukemia cells, said Cornelia Ulrich, senior author and an assistant member of the Hutchinson Center's Public Health Sciences Division.

Low natural killer cell activity has been associated with increased cancer rates and a higher susceptibility to colds and infections, she said.

"While one weight-loss episode of 10 pounds or more in the previous 20 years was not associated with current natural killer cell activity, more frequent weight-loss episodes" were associated with a significant decrease in such activity, Ulrich said.

The study found that women who maintained a fairly stable weight over several years had higher levels of such cells than those whose weight frequently fluctuated.

Those who reported losing weight more than five times had about a third lower natural killer cell function, the study found. Conversely, women who maintained the same weight for at least five years had 40 percent greater natural killer cell activity as compared to those who maintained their weight for fewer than two years.

Though no men participated in the study and further research is needed, Ulrich said the immune systems of male dieters would likely be affected the same way.

The findings, while intriguing, are preliminary, cautioned Ulrich, who is also a research assistant professor in epidemiology at the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

Researchers had to rely on the participants' own reports of their weight loss histories and the analysis was based on blood samples collected at a single point in time, representing a narrow sample.

A long-term study could provide more conclusive results, said Ulrich, who is planning to collaborate with Canadian researchers who have been working on a similar study.

Although the study suggests that yo-yo dieting is harmful, Ulrich stopped short of saying that people should stop attempting to lose weight.

"There's clearly evidence that weight loss is beneficial for your health," she said. "What we're concerned about is this pattern of weight cycling where women go up and down."

Exercise has been shown to boost immunity and temper some of the negative effects of weight loss on the immune system, Ulrich said.

Despite its preliminary nature, the study is significant, said Katherine Tallmadge, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association in Washington, D.C. Although dietitians have known for years the negative psychological effects of yo-yo dieting, this appears to be the first study to examine the long-term impact of such dieting on immunity, she said.

People should avoid popular low-carb and low-fat diets that can produce initial weight loss but rarely work in the long term, Tallmadge said.

"Study after study shows that more moderate restrictions are more likely to last permanently," Tallmadge said. "That's why we registered dietitians are urging people not to do the fad diets, and just try small changes that they're more likely to be able to live with even if the weight loss is slower."

Obesity: A Doctor's Perspective

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than half of Americans are overweight and of these, half are obese (ie, have a BMI of more than 30). This number is increasing at an alarming rate. From 1960 to 1964, the percentage of overweight Americans increased from 13 percent to 23 percent, and today more than 50 percent of American adults are overweight. Yet Americans are not alone in this pandemic. Twenty percent of European adults are obese as well, which means that 15 to 30 million people in the United Kingdom, France and Germany are at risk of developing the serious health problems that can affect people whose BMIs exceed 30. And the problem is not limited to those who live in the West. The incidence of obesity may be lower in some Asian countries, but the rate of increase in these countries is comparable to the rate seen here.

The causes of obesity:

My family includes many farmers. From early in the morning until long after dark, they worked the fields or tended their animals. Seldom did they sit down. Today's successful farmers spend hours at their computers, balancing their ledgers and studying ways to improve their crop yields. Success has led to both a decrease in physical activity and an increase of food intake. The "good life", in short, has given us too much food and too much inactivity.

Looking at the problem a little more deeply reveals other important factors. Culture plays a major role in the genesis of obesity and can be an even greater influence than affluence. For example, obesity is a greater problem in Mexico than it is in Canada. In America, the cities with the highest percentage of obese individuals are New Orleans and Atlanta, whereas the city with the lowest rate of obese adults is Denver. (In fact, Georgia alone has seen a 101.8 percent increase in the number of obese adults during the last seven years - double the national average.) Cities with higher unemployment rates, a larger proportion of African-Americans, lower per capita incomes, higher annual precipitation levels and a higher number of food stores per capita tend to have higher numbers of obese individuals.

Another factor that contributes to obesity is genetics. After all, not everyone who indulges in rich foods and shies away from physical activity will become obese. Children with overweight parents are more likely to become overweight adults, and their odds are even greater if both of their parents are overweight. The prevalence of obesity in both parents of two-parent families doubled between 1969 and 1991.

The impact of obesity on health care costs:

An overwhelming percent of obese adults (80 percent) have coronary heart disease, diabetes, gallbladder disease, hypercholesterolemia, hypertension or osteoarthritis. Additional problems directly related to obesity include gastric reflux disease, stroke and depression.

Clearly obesity is a health risk and an expensive one at that. According to the American Obesity Association, the cost of health care for the obese in America comes to $238 billion per year. This represents the cost of managing diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, depression and other illnesses that can result from an individual being obese.

The physicians' responsibility:

Physicians must play a key role in managing obesity. Assessment of the BMI should be part of any screening program, as should counseling and education about potential health risks and available treatments. Referrals should also be provided to patients to a clinic, group or physician (whichever seems most appropriate).

The patients' responsibility:

In the long run, the ultimate responsibility rests with the patient. Modifying behavior is very difficult under the best of circumstances and is virtually impossible without a strong commitment from the patient. Studies have shown that individuals who have lost weight successfully have had a trigger to their success. This can be a serious medical problem, such as diabetes, sleep apnea, low back pain or varicose veins, or an emotional trigger, such as a husband or wife leaving a spouse because the other was overweight.

In conclusion, we need to treat obesity as a medical disease. Success requires commitment to a lifetime of new behavior. There needs to be a multi-pronged approach that includes diet and exercise modification, pharmaceutical crutches, behavioral modification, counseling and feedback.

To paraphrase Mark Twain, "Losing weight is easy. I've done it hundreds of times and have lost hundreds of pounds over the years."

Think "Activity" not "Exercise" and boost your weight loss

The Top 10 Foods to Avoid

If you're like most people, you're probably confused about trans fats. Which foods have them, and which don't? Which are the worst foods, which are the best?
WebMD turned to Cindy Moore, MS, RD, director of nutrition therapy at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for guidance. Print out this list to become a wiser, safer shopper. And remember to check the food labels. Manufacturers will probably begin reducing the amount of trans fats in packaged foods during the next few years, so this information may change.

The Top 10 "Trans Fat" Foods:
1. Spreads. Margarine is a twisted sister -- it's loaded with trans fats and saturated fats, both of which can lead to heart disease. Other non-butter spreads and shortening also contain large amounts of trans fat and saturated fat:
* Stick margarine has 2.8 grams of trans fat per tablespoon, and 2.1 grams of saturated fat.
* Tub margarine has 0.6 grams of trans fat per tablespoon, and 1.2 grams of saturated fat.
* Shortening has 4.2 grams of trans fat per tablespoon, and 3.4 grams of saturated fat.
* Butter has 0.3 grams of trans fat per tablespoon, and 7.2 grams of saturated fat.
Tip: Look for soft-tub margarine, because it is less likely to have trans fat. Some margarines already say that on the packaging.
[Important note: When you cook with margarine or shortening, you will not increase the amount of trans fat in food, says Moore. Cooking is not the same as the hydrogenation process. "Margarine and shortening are already bad, but you won't make them any worse."]

2. Packaged foods. Cake mixes, Bisquick, and other mixes all have several grams of trans fat per serving.
Tip: Add flour and baking powder to your grocery list; do-it-yourself baking is about your only option right now, says Moore. Or watch for reduced-fat mixes.

3. Soups. Ramen noodles and soup cups contain very high levels of trans fat.
Tip: Get out the crock-pot and recipe book. Or try the fat-free and reduced-fat canned soups.

4. Fast Food. Bad news here: Fries, chicken, and other foods are deep-fried in partially hydrogenated oil. Even if the chains use liquid oil, fries are sometimes partially fried in trans fat before they're shipped to the restaurant. Pancakes and grilled sandwiches also have some trans fat, from margarine slathered on the grill.
Examples:
* Fries (a medium order) contain 14.5 grams.
* A KFC Original Recipe chicken dinner has 7 grams, mostly from the chicken and biscuit.
* Burger King Dutch Apple Pie has 2 grams.
Tip: Order your meat broiled or baked. Skip the pie. Forget the biscuit. Skip the fries -- or share them with many friends.

5. Frozen Food. Those yummy frozen pies, pot pies, waffles, pizzas, even breaded fish sticks contain trans fat. Even if the label says it's low-fat, it still has trans fat.
* Mrs. Smith's Apple Pie has 4 grams trans fat in every delicious slice.
* Swanson Potato Topped Chicken Pot Pie has 1 gram trans fat.
* Banquet Chicken Pot Pie has no trans fat.
Tip: In frozen foods, baked is always heart-healthier than breaded. Even vegetable pizzas aren't flawless; they likely have trans fat in the dough. Pot pies are often loaded with too much saturated fat, even if they have no trans fat, so forget about it.

6. Baked Goods. Even worse news -- more trans fats are used in commercially baked products than any other foods. Doughnuts contain shortening in the dough and are cooked in trans fat.
Cookies and cakes (with shortening-based frostings) from supermarket bakeries have plenty of trans fat. Some higher-quality baked goods use butter instead of margarine, so they contain less trans fat, but more saturated fat.
* Donuts have about 5 grams of trans fat apiece, and nearly 5 grams of saturated fat.
* Cream-filled cookies have 1.9 grams of trans fat, and 1.2 grams of saturated fat.
* Pound cake has 4.3 grams of trans fat per slice, and 3.4 grams of saturated fat.
Tip: Get back to old-fashioned home cooking again. If you bake, use fat-substitute baking products, or just cut back on the bad ingredients, says Moore. Don't use the two sticks of butter or margarine the recipe calls for two. Try using one stick and a fat-free baking product.

7. Chips and Crackers. Shortening provides crispy texture. Even "reduced fat" brands can still have trans fat. Anything fried (like potato chips and corn chips) or buttery crackers have trans fat.
* A small bag of potato chips has 3.2 grams of trans fat.
* Nabisco Original Wheat Thins Baked Crackers have 2 grams in a 16-cracker serving.
* Sunshine Cheez-It Baked Snack Crackers have 1.5 grams per 27 crackers.
Tip: Think pretzels, toast, pita bread. Actually, pita bread with a little tomato sauce and low-fat cheese tastes pretty good after a few minutes in the toaster oven.

8. Breakfast food. Breakfast cereal and energy bars are quick-fix, highly processed products that contain trans fats, even those that claim to be "healthy."
* Kellogg's Cracklin' Oat Bran Cereal has 1.5 grams per 3/4 cup serving.
* Post Selects Great Grains has 1 gram trans fat per 1/2 cup serving.
* General Mills Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal has .5 grams per 3/4 cup serving.
* Quaker Chewy Low Fat Granola Bars Chocolate Chunk has .5 grams trans fat.
Tip: Whole-wheat toast, bagels, and many cereals don't have much fat. Cereals with nuts do contain fat, but it's healthy fat.

9. Cookies and Candy. Look at the labels; some have higher fat content than others. A chocolate bar with nuts -- or a cookie -- is likely to have more trans fat than gummy bears.
* Nabisco Chips Ahoy! Real Chocolate Chip Cookies have 1.5 grams per 3 cookies. If you plow through a few handfuls of those, you've put away a good amount of trans fat.
Tip: Gummy bears or jelly beans win, hands down. If you must have chocolate, get dark chocolate -- since it's been shown to have redeeming heart-healthy virtues.

10. Toppings and Dips. Nondairy creamers and flavored coffees, whipped toppings, bean dips, gravy mixes, and salad dressings contain lots of trans fat.
Tip: Use skim milk or powdered nonfat dry milk in coffee. Keep an eye out for fat-free products of all types. As for salad dressings, choose fat-free there, too -- or opt for old-fashioned oil-and-vinegar dressing. Natural oils such as olive oil and canola oil don't contain trans fat.

Can you eliminate trans fats entirely your diet? Probably not. Even the esteemed National Academy of Sciences stated last year that such a laudable goal is not possible or realistic. Instead, take this suggestion from Moore: "The goal is to have as little trans fat in your diet as possible. "You're not eliminating trans fats entirely, but you're certainly cutting back."

Cut back on foods like French fries made with artery-clogging fats and eat more fish and other foods that contain healthy fats, the government may start advising consumers.

The White House Office of Management and Budget recommended in a letter Wednesday that the departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services emphasize eating foods with omega-3 fats that lower the risk of heart disease and warn against eating trans fatty acids, which increase the risk.

John D. Graham, who heads OMB’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs – the Bush administration’s regulatory watchdog – wrote that current standards fall short, targeting “only the reduction of saturated fat and cholesterol, with only a brief reference to the risks from trans fatty acids and benefits of omega-3 fatty acids.”

OMB issued the recommendations just as the government is working on new guidelines. Schools in the federal lunch program rely on two sets of guidelines when planning meals served to 28 million low-income children every school day. The Food Guide Pyramid, an educational graphic that prioritizes categories of food and hasn’t been changed since 1992; and dietary guidelines that are updated every five years, most recently 2000. New versions of both are due out in 2005, but it’s too soon to tell whether they’ll include any of the OMB’s recommendations, said Alisa Harrison, spokeswoman for the Agriculture Department.

The government is selecting experts for an advisory panel to help draft new guidelines. “They will consider evidence not only for the relationships between diet and cardiovascular disease but for all aspects of health,” Harrison said. The government already is being bombarded with advice from the food industry, consumer groups, experts, lawmakers and the general public on what the guidelines should say.

Worries over trans fatty acids have increased over the years as more studies show that eating them can clog arteries since they lower the level of good cholesterol, HDL, while raising the level of bad cholesterol, LDL.

Trans fat is in hydrogenated oils, grease, shortening and an array of baked and fried goods. The harmful fat is hidden from consumers because it is not labeled on products. That will change soon. The Food and Drug Administration, under pressure from the White House, is planning to require companies to list the amount of the harmful fat in their products. The FDA also is looking at putting a warning on foods that have trans fat, which consumer groups support but the food industry opposes. Manufacturers argue that a warning would confuse consumers and cause them to eat more saturated fat, which also is unhealthy.

Dr. Marvin Lipman, chief medical adviser for Consumer Union, welcomed OMB’s recommendations for changing the dietary guidelines. “I think there is emerging evidence that 0mega-3 fatty acids help the heart, and I think the recommendation which is forthcoming from Health and Human Services, from the FDA, is that omega-3 fatty acids can help prevent a second heart attack,” he said.

You might want to think twice about using an appetite suppressant to quickly shed a few pounds off your widening waist or fatty thighs. A recent study has found that a key ingredient in over-the-counter diet pills can increase the risk of stroke in women.

Based on the investigation of stroke patients by the Yale University School of Medicine, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel recommended that phenylpropanolamine (PPA) be removed from over-the-counter appetite suppressants and cold medicines. The federal agency is evaluating whether PPA should be discontinued as an active ingredient in over-the-counter medication.

The Yale University study is not the first time that health experts and nutritionists have questioned the safety of PPA, the only approved active ingredient in over-the-counter appetite suppressants. Diet pills containing PPA can cause fatigue, insomnia, mood changes, irritability, high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm, heart and kidney damage, and seizures, says nutritionist Frances Berg, publisher of the Healthy Weight Journal and an adjunct professor at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine.

Products with PPA are responsible for an estimated 200 to 500 strokes each year in people ages 18 to 49, primarily women and first-time users of the drug, according to the FDA's staff analysis of the Yale University study. The five-year investigation of 702 stroke patients ages 18 to 49 found that the risk of hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in the brain) was 15 times higher in women who took appetite suppressants in the three days before the stroke.

Besides being risky to your health, diet pills are not a permanent solution to controlling your weight, Berg says. The members of the FDA advisory committee agree, commenting at their recent meeting that almost all consumers who take appetite suppressants eventually regain the pounds they shed, FDA spokesman Jason Brodsky says.

"People should not be using these appetite suppressants," Berg says

Diet pills have gained popularity among teenage girls, who often equate being fat to being a failure in today's weight-obsessed culture, Berg writes in her book, Afraid to Eat: Children and Teens in Weight Crisis. In a study of Michigan State University students, one in five said they started using diet pills between ages 12 to 16 and nearly half of the women in the study group had tried a dietary drug, according to Berg.

The lure of diet pills comes at a time when more Americans than ever are overweight. Being overweight - as are 55 percent of adults and 11 percent of children ages 6 to 17 - can lead to serious health problems, such as heart disease and diabetes. An all-time high of 16 million Americans have diabetes, and the rate of diagnosed cases is expected to continue climbing because Americans are getting heavier each year, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Prepregnancy Obesity Puts Baby at Risk

Obesity Linked to Heart, Neural Tube, and Abdominal Birth Defects

Babies born to mothers who are overweight or obese face an increased risk for congenital heart problems and other birth defects, a new government study shows.
Compared with normal-weight women, those who were overweight at the time of conception had twice the risk of giving birth to babies with heart abnormalities, according to findings from the CDC investigation.
Obese women were more than three times as likely to deliver babies with the neural tube defect spina bifida or the abdominal malformation known as omphalocele, in which the intestines or other abdominal organs protrude into the umbilical cord.

While earlier research suggested a link between prepregnancy weight and specific birth defects, the CDC report offers the most comprehensive evidence yet of the negative impact of maternal obesity on the health of unborn babies. The study is published in the May 5 issue of the journal Pediatrics.
"This is yet another adverse health outcome linked to obesity and overweight," CDC epidemiologist Margaret L. Watkins, MPH, tells WebMD. "It emphasizes the need for prevention efforts aimed at getting a higher proportion of women to achieve a healthy weight before they get pregnant."

The CDC study compared women who delivered babies with birth defects in a five-county area of Atlanta between 1993 and 1997 with mothers who gave birth to healthy babies during the same period. Women with pre-existing diabetes were excluded from the study.
The mothers were considered overweight if they had a body mass index (a comparison of weight and height) between 25-30. Women with a BMI of 30 or more were considered obese.
In addition to the individual birth defects, overweight women were twice as likely to have babies with multiple congenital abnormalities.

Watkins says it is not clear why the offspring of overweight women are at increased risk, but one possible explanation may be metabolic abnormalities common in people who carry extra pounds. Obesity is associated with elevated insulin levels, which has previously been shown to be a risk factor for neural tube defects like spina bifida. "We know that if you are overweight or obese you are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, and diabetes is a known risk factor for birth defects," Watkins says. "We excluded all known diabetics from the study, but it is possible that some women had unrecognized or sub-clinical diabetes."

According to the March of Dimes, prepregnancy obesity is a major cause of premature births in the United States. In a report published early last year, the organization's Task Force on Nutrition and Optimal Human Development concluded that birth defects, premature births, and other severe health problems were likely to rise in coming years due to the obesity epidemic.

Columbia University professor of nutrition Richard J. Deckelbaum, MD, who led the task force, tells WebMD that neither women nor their doctors have gotten the message that prepregnancy weight control is associated with delivering a healthy baby. "This is another reason for women to really make an effort to keep their weight under control," he says. "Maintaining a healthy weight is not only good for a woman's personal health, but for that of her future children. Birth defects carry a tremendous cost, not only for the baby and the family, but for society."

Earning money has nothing to do with age, formal education, gender or geography. It has nothing to do with past experience or your formal years of education or your level of intellect. Check it out... there are individuals who are functionally illiterate who have become multi-millionaires, while there are others who are absolutely brilliant and they are broke. Virtually anyone can be taught how to earn millions of dollars and yet the sad truth is that 97 out of every 100 people are born, live their entire lives, and die without ever learning how to earn money. To perpetuate this ridiculous problem, their ignorance is passed along from one generation to the next.

Our school system has been designed as an environment to enlighten young minds, to replace ignorance with understanding and thereby improve the quality of life. Our educational system has obviously been successful in many areas. However, it has woefully neglected one important subject, "How to Earn Money." You can earn a doctorate degree in economics and have little or no knowledge of how to earn money. A lack of understanding in this area is the cause of numerous unwanted and unnecessary problems, since money is the medium of exchange that is used worldwide for other people's products and services.

There has always been a small, select group, approximately 3% of our population, who clearly understand that prosperity consciousness is the primary cause of wealth and their prosperity consciousness, like ignorance, is also passed down from one generation to the next.

Let's look at "money." What is it? Money is a reward you receive for the service you render. The more valuable the service, the greater the reward. Thinking of ways we can be of greater service will not only help us earn more money, it will also enable us to grow intellectually and spiritually.

Money Is An Idea
The paper you fold and place in your purse or pocket is not money. It is paper with ink on it. It represents money, but it is not money. Money is an idea. The earning of money has nothing to do with the paper stuff. It has to do with consciousness.

I am aware there are books that instruct you on how to manipulate the market, stocks and people... they might even help you get money. But, let me caution you... when there is no spiritual growth... there is no spiritual strength... there is no lasting happiness... and, there is no real or lasting wealth.

To accumulate wealth, a person must become very comfortable with the idea of money. That may sound strange, however most people are not comfortable with the idea of money, which is why they do not have any. The cause of poverty is poverty consciousness. A poverty consciousness will cause a person to see, hear, smell, think and feel ... lack and limitation.

The late Mike Todd said, "Being broke is a temporary situation. Being poor is a mental state."

He was correct. There are wealthy people who lose every cent they have through a series of mistakes in judgment... but that does not make them poor. They will have it all back in a short time because of their prosperity consciousness.

If you have any question in your mind regarding your level of consciousness with respect to money, be very honest with yourself and look at your results. Study the patterns in your life.

If you want to improve your financial position in life, focus your attention on creating a higher level of prosperity consciousness. Begin by preparing a powerful, positive affirmation and fuel it with emotion. When you do this, you are depositing this creative energy in the treasury of your sub-conscious mind. And, by repeating this process over and over and over again every day, it will begin to alter your conditioning and mentally move you in the direction you want to go. Write it out, read it, feel it, and let it take hold of your mind.

How much money do you want? Saying you want more is not good enough. Five dollars is more. How much more? Decide on a figure. Be specific. You will not seriously want more money than you are capable of earning... however, you would be wise to remember, you must earn it.


There Are Three Income Earning Strategies
Trading time for money - By far the worst of the three income earning strategies, it is employed by approximately 96% of our population - doctors, lawyers, accountants, laborers, etc. There is an inherent problem with this strategy - saturation. You run out of time. If a person accumulates any degree of wealth employing this strategy, it will be at the expense of a life. They compromise on the car they drive, the house they live in, the clothes they choose and the vacations they take. They rarely, if ever, get what they want.

Investing money to earn money - This strategy is used by approximately 3% of the population. The number is small for the obvious reason - very few people have any money to invest. Many people who effectively employ this strategy follow the advice of a trusted, knowledgeable advisor.

Leveraging yourself to earn money - This is where you multiply your time through the efforts of others by setting up Multiple Sources of Income (MSI). This is, without question, the very best way to increase your income. Make a decision to have many sources of income; it's the strategy that wealthy people have used dating clear back to the ancient Babylonians. Unfortunately, this strategy is only used by approximately 1% of our population, yet that 1% earns approximately 96% of all the money that is earned! You are only a decision away from membership.

Once you determine how much money you want to earn, write it down on a sheet of paper in large figures. Look at the number with the dollar sign beside it and tell yourself over and over again:

That Amount of Money is an Effect.
It Represents a Reward that I Want to Receive.
What Service Can I Render that Would be Deserving of that Reward?

You can take the total figure and divide it into multiple parts. Each part would represent a source of income. Each source of income represents a separate reward that you would receive for a service you would render.

Work on one source of income at a time; each one can become an exciting part of your life. What you are actually doing is thinking of different ways you can be of service to others.

Think of how you can do whatever you do - more effectively.
Think of how you can improve the quality and quantity of service you render.
Think of how you can help people in a greater way.

Money is the ultimate servant. The more you earn, the more you can help others.

Childhood Obesity: A Big Problem

Blame it on genetics. Blame it on the lack of physical education at school. Blame it on the Internet.

In the last 20 years, the number of obese children in the United States has doubled to one in five children. This is the most dramatic increase of obesity in history.

But the issue isn't about blame. It's about a preventable disease that's at an all-time high in this country for children and adults. The issue of childhood obesity starts with prevention — empowering children to be in control of their bodies and helping parents and grandparents like you make the right decisions with regard to nutrition and exercise.

How do kids become obese?

Regardless of age, you gain excess weight when the amount of calories coming in equals more than the amount of calories burned. But obesity is not that simple. Obesity is a complex disease. Weight gain is affected by a variety of factors in addition to caloric intake.
Such factors may include:

Genetics. Children with overweight parents are more likely to be overweight.

Metabolism. A fast metabolism burns calories quicker than a slow metabolism. Exercise is the main factor that affects metabolism. Although rare, medical conditions you have and medications that you take also may cause changes. To some extent, how much you eat, when you eat and when you skip meals also may affect your metabolism.

Environment. Genetics and metabolism often set the groundwork for a person to become obese, and then environment is the determining factor. Some examples include:

* The "clean your plate" mentality, which can encourage kids to eat more than necessary.
* Only 25 percent of school-aged children take physical education courses, meaning that fewer and fewer kids exercise during the school day.
* Physically inactive families also contribute to developing an inactive lifestyle. Kids don't have a lot of good fitness-minded role models — less than 50 percent of Americans exercise 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. It's hard to be motivated without inspiration.

Physical and emotional risks
Obesity in children can lead to medical complications including:
Adding to the issue, treatments for many of these issues may contribute to weight gain or restrict activity such that obesity worsens. Therefore, early intervention is critical to prevent these complications. To successfully help obese children lose weight and stay healthy, fully assess the child's lifestyle relative to eating, activity, inactivity, and caretaker or parent interaction. A child's emotions also are key in successfully treating obesity.

Depression is the most common emotional effect of obesity in kids. Several studies indicate that prejudice against obese people starts as early as 3 to 5 years old. This means before obese kids reach kindergarten, they're often called names, have difficulty making friends, are excluded from activities and are picked last for teams. Such an environment of rejection typically adds to weight gain because it discourages active involvement in athletics and encourages alone-time activities, such as watching television, playing video games or using the Internet.

To help reverse this cycle, it's key to help kids make changes that will be both beneficial and sustainable. Sometimes those changes involve changing what they eat, how much they eat or who they eat with. Other times those changes have nothing to do with food. Kids are strongly affected by their environment, so it may be important to concentrate on how they spend their time — encourage more activity time and less passive time in front of the TV or computer.

LONDON (Reuters Health) - More than 7% of deaths in the European Union can
be attributed to overweight and obesity, according to calculations by
Spanish researchers.


Dr. Jose Ramon Banegas and colleagues from Universidad Autsnoma de Madrid
used data on the prevalence of overweight and obesity in the 15 EU nations
to calculate the proportion of total deaths caused by carrying excess fat.


They estimated the risks associated with being overweight using data from
two US cancer prevention studies that followed 1.2 million men and women for
12 to 14 years. They also performed calculations to account for the effect
of smoking and pre-existing illness.


"Mortality attributable to excess weight is a major public health problem
in the EU. At least one in 13 annual deaths in the EU are likely to be
related to excess weight," they conclude in the February issue of the
European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.


In their government-funded study, the researchers report that a minimum of
279,000 annual deaths could be attributed to excess weight, and the number
could be as high as 304,000.


About 70% of these were due to cardiovascular disease and 20% to cancer.
Other diseases such as type 2 diabetes may also contribute excess
weight-related deaths, Banegas said.


Overall, the weight-related fatalities account for 7.7% of all deaths,
they said. National rates varied from a low of 5.8% in France to 8.7% for
the UK.


"Our estimates are approximate and likely to be conservative," Banegas
told Reuters Health.


"It is important to remain conservative--that is, biased towards
underestimation--when estimating attributable mortality, to avoid the danger
of exaggerating."


Using the lower estimate of 279,000 deaths, the researchers attributed
about 175,000 to obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more.
Overweight people--with BMIs between 25 and 30--accounted for 104,000
deaths.


BMI is a measure of weight in relation to height calculated by dividing a
person's weight in kilograms by their height in metres squared.


According to a World Health Organisation report last year, more than one
billion people were overweight worldwide, of whom 300 million were
clinically obese. The UN health organisation said that at least 500,000 of
these people die each year.

Omega-3 for Children


A Purdue University study has showed that children low in Omega-3 essential fatty acids are significantly more likely to be hyperactive, have learning disorders, and to display behavioral problems. Omega-3 deficiencies have also been tied to many conditions, including the following:

· Dyslexia
· Violence
· Depression
· Memory problems
· Weight gain
· Cancer
· Heart disease
· Eczema
· Allergies
· Inflammatory diseases
· Arthritis
· Diabetes


Over 2,000 scientific studies have demonstrated the wide range of problems associated with Omega-3 deficiencies. The American diet is almost devoid of Omega-3’s, except for certain types of fish. In fact, researchers believe that about 60% of Americans are deficient in Omega-3 fatty acids, and about 20% have so little that test methods cannot even detect any in their blood.

The human brain is more than 60% structural fat, just as your muscles are made of protein and your bones are made up of calcium. But it’s not just any fat that our brains are made of. It has to be certain types of fats, and we no longer eat these types of fats like we used to. Worse, we eat man-made trans-fats and excessive amounts of saturated fats and vegetable oils high in Omega-6 fatty acids, all of which interfere with our body’s attempt to utilize the tiny amount of Omega-3 fats that it gets.

Imagine your brain conducting some routine maintenance on your dopamine and serotonin receptors (implicated in both ADD and mood disorders). These receptors are composed of an Omega-3 fatty acid called. DHA.

Now imagine a child in school learning math. The act of learning requires the brain to form new neural pathways. DHA is needed, especially for the delicate neural synapses, which are composed entirely of DHA. This child, like the vast majority of U.S. children, eats almost no Omega-3 fatty acids. What does the brain do? Again, it struggles and finally uses other types of fats, which are the wrong shape. The neural network develops slowly and is defective. The child has learning and memory problems as well as behavior problems.

Within the next 5 or 10 years the population at large will become familiar with the issue of fatty acid deficiency and the harm caused by transfats, and there will be significant changes in the way food is formulated and marketed. In response to growing public pressure and the rising number of studies implicating transfats, the FDA has announced a new rule that will require the transfat content of foods, but it won’t become effective for a few years.
