If you go out drinking on New Year's Eve....
To help prevent a hangover....
Drink plenty of water...
Hangovers is a sign of dehydration.
Your blood vessels are contracting.
So Drink a huge glass of water before you go out...
Try to drink some in-between the alcoholic drinks....
And be sure to drink another large glass before going to bed...
Be sure to hit the bathroom before retiring....with all that water...
 
You may want to coat your stomach with a glass of milk before going out...

In the Year 2004....Eat Right!
 
This New Year...
Let's commit to eat a well balanced diet. It is important for your health. Not just for losing weight. It should become a life time commitment. Learn to enjoy all kinds of foods.
When you do not eat a well balanced diet...health problems can occur...
such as...
weak bones, low energy, cancers, unhealthy looking skin and hair, clogged arteries, blood pressure problems,...the list goes on and on...
 
So try to have some fruit throughout the day....
 
Some vegetables with lunch and dinner.
You can even make a vegetable a in between meal snack.
 
Start to eat fiber...toss out fibreless breads and cereals...
Visit Diet Depot's Fiber Issue...
 
Cut out unsaturated fats and tranfats.
Stock up with the healthier oils, such as Olive Oil and Canola Oil.
 
In the Butter Isle...
Try Smart Beat Butter Spread....and some others in that category.
They are Transfat free...
 
Milk is loaded with calcium plus...
Drop 1% with your milk...then later on..try dropping another percent.
And you still get all the nutrients!!
 
This year..think when you shop at the grocer and think before you eat...
Learn, Plan, Prepare, Enjoy....
 

 
Serving Sizes are Important
 
Foods that have a high percentage of fat, or simple carbohydrates that are mainly sugars will slow down your goal of weight loss and are just not healthy!!
 
Learn to read food labels....
Don't just read the calories and the grams, learn to figure out the percentage of the total of calories, that are from the fats and sugars in the product.
 
 
Learn what size is a standard serving size according to the USDA Food Pyramid.

Here are a few examples:
Standard size servings include:
 
one cup cereal;
one cup green salad. 
1/4 cup raisins,
1/2 cup cooked vegetables, 
1/2 cup fruit salad, 
1/2 cup mashed potatoes,
 
Here is a way to compare...
 
The tip of your thumb is close to a tablespoon of butter. 
 
A computer mouse or a deck of cards equals 3 ounces of meat. 
 
A tennis ball is about the size of one cup.
 
 
Read the Ingredients list. 
 
Whole-wheat flour, oats, etc. 
NOTE: Wheat flour is NOT whole-grain flour. It must say Whole first!!!
 
Next,
Read the Nutrient
Facts panel for the total grams of fiber. 
If the product is using whole grains, the product will contain large amounts of fiber. 
The more whole grains used in a snack, 
the higher the fiber content will be in each serving. 
Don't be fooled when a company uses just a small amount to call it healthy.
If the fiber grams is low....the product doesn't contain much whole grains.
Companies will be sneaky!!
 
Read the Sugar Grams...
Choose products with a lower amount of sugars.
Many fat-free snacks, are packed with sugar,
to give it flavor, 
in place of the missing fat flavor. 

 
New Year's Resolutions...
 
What can a Healthy Resolution be??
It can be small...
With a small promise to yourself...it is easier to keep and you will feel better when you do...
 
1. I will cut out all soda. (To motivate yourself - get a water bottle)
 
2. I will drink plenty of water. (To motivate yourself - Buy a filter)
 
3. I will cut out all caffeine. (To motivate yourself - Buy decaf teas and coffees)
(You can start slow...Mix decaf coffee with Regular Coffee,
Next week, make it less regular coffee and more decaf...
do this till it is all decaf)
 
4. I will get healthier teeth and gums... (To motivate yourself - buy a Spin Brush, Listerine to fight gingervitious, Act for more fluoride, a dental floss tool, a whitening toothpaste and a tarter fighting toothpaste.)
 
5. I will cut out potatoes and french fries ( Try Sweet Potatoes and Yams)
 
6. I will cut out my before bedtime snack.
 
7.  I will eat a healthy breakfast. No more junk or skipping breakfast!
 
8. I will start to exercise. Start slow and add more time on each week or two.

7. Today I will make time for myself. I will eat healthy, and I will exercise.

8. I will not ignore, hide from, or avoid food.
I will face food and not lean on it.

9. I realize food has no power and will never solve any of my problems -
past, present, or future.

10.I will be patient with myself and will not become
compulsive and obsessed with losing weight and exercising.

11. If I didn't do great yesterday, I will try harder today.

12. I will take a daily inventory and be truthful with myself.

13. I know now there are no easy ways to do this.
I know the only way to achieve my goal is through exercise,
eating healthy, and staying motivated.

14. I will use my sense of humor today, for it heals
loneliness, depression, insecurity, and boredom.

15. This time I am doing this for me.

16. I am a terrific person and I like myself right
now, no matter what I weigh.

17. The next time I have a craving for anything I know
is fattening or am tempted not to exercise,
I will think about the new me, and I will be strong.

18. I will take a look in the mirror and say, "I'm going to have a great day."

19. I have a very positive outlook about "My Life".

Please remember the best way to keep the weight off is by losing weight slowly.
Just a pound or 2 a week is great!!
When you lose a lot of weight fast...It is often water weight and/or muscle mass which you want to keep.
Some people start a week with the cabbage soup diet...
You can find some info on that in this issue...

Here is what Sharon has to share...
 
I eat meat sparingly, primarily poultry and fish.
 
We load up on the healthy treats and make sure to
bring a healthy treat of our own when we're invited to
a gathering so we have at least one thing healthy to
eat!
 
I will focus on cutting down even more on refined
sugars, especially products sweetened with "high
fructose corn syrup." That stuff is even worse for you
that white sugar and you find it almost everywhere now
in processed foods. Yikes!

Here is a recipe Sharon would like to share...
 
Take a bunch of fresh, raw pecans (shelled) and spread
them out in a single layer on a cookie sheet.
Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 12-15 minutes or until
they just start turning brown.
You'll know by the smell when they're done.
(It's heavenly, and so is the taste!)
Who needs junk food when you can enjoy these fresh out of the oven?
