Received this in my Aikido Newsletter. It is long so I
have put the results at the end up top here as well.
The detailed info follows.

(NOTE: Correspondence: Email me separately as I do not
look at the site often and just use it for reference.)

Results summary:
--Peppermint is associated with decreased anxiety while
driving.
--Peppermint is associated with decreased fatigue while
driving.
--Peppermint and cinnamon are associated with decreased
driving frustration.
--Peppermint and cinnamon are associated with decreased
temporal demand while
driving.
--Peppermint and cinnamon are associated with greater
levels of driving alertness.
The results of the study were presented at the recent
Association for Chemical Reception
Sciences Conference in Sarasota, Fla."

From Original New School Aikido Newsletter:

"This comes from Wheeling Jesuit University (West
Virginia)
If you want to be a better, more alert driver and you
want that grind of a daily commute to
be a little less frustrating, all you have to do is fill
your car with the scent of either
peppermint or cinnamon.

When researchers from Wheeling Jesuit University in West
Virginia, exposed volunteer
drivers to the scent of peppermint and cinnamon, a funny
thing happened. They became
less frustrated and suffered less anxiety and fatigue.
In addition, they became more
alert--just from the scent of these two spices. "Given
these results, it is reasonable to
expect that the presentation of peppermint or cinnamon
odor while driving may produce a
more alert and conscientious driver, and minimize the
fatigue associated with prolonged
driving," said study leader and associate professor of
psychology Dr. Bryan Raudenbush.

This wasn't a total surprise. Previous research has
shown that peppermint and cinnamon
enhance motivation, performance, and alertness, decrease
fatigue, and serve as central
nervous system stimulants.

In this latest study, Raudenbush found that when
volunteers who were monitored during
simulated driving conditions were exposed for 30 seconds
in 15 minute intervals to
cinnamon, their level of fatigue decreased. In addition,
the drivers became more alert
when exposed to cinnamon and peppermint, while a no-odor
control had no effect on the
drivers. "Periodic administration of these odors over
long-term driving may prove
beneficial in maintaining alertness and decreasing
highway accidents and fatalities,"
Raudenbush said in a news release announcing the study
findings.

Other oils and combos to try which may smell better to your husband:

With mosquito season upon us with the usual concern about West Nile
people may be stocking up on bug repellent and wondering if there are
alternatives to Deet, which is rather unpleasant and has some people
concerned about toxicity. I have been using an insect repellent that
contains catnip oil which has been found to be more effective than
Deet and much more pleasant to wear. Now there is a new essential oil
that has been found to be effective also - oil of lemon eucalyptus.

Another formula I have seen contains oil of rosemary and pennyroyal
so despite the catnip content my friend's cat hates it and she has
not been attacked by felines.

Good luck pleasing yourself and your husband and NOT the mosquitos!

Subject: drawing out toxins in lungs

For those who asked for instructions on drawing out toxins in the lungs I
have these notes. I’m not sure if this is for smokers - I think this was for
breathing asbestos and manure dust, but it may be the same for smokers.

Lung and the Liver Compress Instructions—Lung Compress to remove foreign
debris –

Layer Chest with 3-4 drops each of the following oils:

Peppermint, Lavender, then Melrose, finally Thieves.
Cover with hot wet towel.
Cover that with NON-ELECTRIC heat, i.e. hot water bottle or gel heat packs.
Cover all with hot dry towels.
Leave in place for at least TWO hours.

The compress will literally PULL the junk out of the lungs through the skin
leaving the towel at least discolored if not absolutely black. CAUTION: If
using this on a woman with fibroid masses in the breasts, pull out from the
back. If not, the debris pulled through will lodge behind the masses and
cause an area for disease to begin.

Dana used the example of man who worked with turkeys all his life. The work
caused fine dust to clog his lung tissues. I suppose this could easily be
adapted to tars and junk from industrial pollution as well.

Liver or Kidney Compresses

Same procedure as above, but use: Lavender, Basil, Marjoram, and Melrose.
Take Juvatone. These oils can also be diffused or applied over the liver and
kidneys

Hi
This summer a mosquito has decided to bite my face at night. It even bit the
area of the lower skull that is covered by some hair last night.

Can you please let me know what to do. Reading that myrrh is good against
insect bites is great, but my husband does not like the smell of the oils.
Please let me know if I could take anything internally as well.
Many thanks,
Petra

PROTECT AND SUPPORT YOUR BRAIN
By Jacquelyn Close
Registered Aromatherapist

Today people live longer. Average life expectancy is now 77.2 years,
according to the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. That
represents a greater than 10-year increase over life expectancy in
the 1960s. We celebrate more years of marriage, and enjoy more time
with our children, grandchildren even our great-children. Yet the
quality of life is not always commensurate with the length of life.

While our current living standard offers more years, is does not
always offer more joy, health and happiness. Living in an
environment rich in pollutants and toxins makes heavy demands on our
immune system. Our bodies are burdened with the chemicals and
synthetics found in commercial soaps, toothpastes, cosmetics,
kitchen cleansers, pharmaceuticals, even the water we drink and
bathe in, and increasingly they are also found in the food chain.
Our bodies are God's magnificent creations, built to withstand and
flourish even under difficult circumstances. Yet, just as a water
pitcher can contain only so much water, our bodies can only handle
so many chemical attacks before they overflow with chemicals,
breaking down our redundant life-support systems, and dramatically
increasing our chances for systemic illnesses, such as heart
disease, diabetes, arthritis, and chronic infections.

Vitamins, minerals, essential oils, and anti-oxidant rich super-
foods such as the NingXia Wolfberry support the body, helping to
keep it running like a well-oiled machine. They diminish, and may
even remediate, digest and remove toxins from our system.

In 2004, researchers at the Rush Institute for Healthy Aging, in
Chicago, found evidence suggesting that Alzheimer's was more likely
to occur in seniors with reduced levels of niacin than in
individuals with niacin to spare. Researchers suspect that B
vitamins protect, nurture and support dendritic growth, a key
component for brain health. Other recent research highlights the
importance of B vitamins in protecting the brain from stroke and
dementia, two of the main reasons for disability in the elderly.

A study published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart
Association, published in 2002, found that people with moderately
high levels of homosysteine, an amino acid that damages blood
vessels, had a more than fivefold increased risk of stroke and a
threefold increased risk for Alzheimer's disease. According to
research, B vitamins can help quench homocysteine, and Vitamin B3
(niacin) has been linked to brain health.

An article in Alternative Medicine magazine, August, 2005,
says "Roughly 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, the
leading cause of dementia." By 2050 that number is expected to
quadruple to 16 million according to the Alzheimer's Association. In
the article, Decker Weiss, ND, a naturopathic physician at the
Arizona Heart Hospital in Phoenix is quoted as saying, "You've got
to get in the habit of taking B vitamins every day."

So, now is the time to start supporting your brain, before the first
signs of trouble ever appear. Fortunately, for those who are already
experiencing the first glimmers of dementia, or may be providing
care for a relative that has dementia or Alzheimer's, our great
Young Living products offer tremendous hope.

A very sweet and dear member of my Young Living group, who is an
LPN, has had wonderful results using Young Living oils and
supplements for her mother, who suffers from Alzheimer's. In fact,
her mother's MD now refers patients to my friend for information
about the oils and supplements she uses for her Mom, in the hopes
that they may provide better support with fewer side effects than
the options the MD can currently offer. Plus, there are many
benefits for family members who are providing in-home care for aging
relatives. My friend regularly orders:

Berry Young Juice
Lavender oil
Peace & Calming
Clarity
Brain Power

If I were dealing with this challenge or looking for a way to avoid
this possible future, I would place a standing monthly order for
Berry Young Juice or the new NingXia Red. These super-foods reduce
inflammation in tissues that may contribute to arterial stress,
considered to be a contributing factor in stroke and dementia.
Super B (Contains Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, and B12)
Master His and/or Master Hers (Contains Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6,
and B12)
Brain Power
Clarity

Brain Power and Clarity are two of my favorite oils. I use them
almost every afternoon to give me a lift. When I am teaching, if I
start to lose concentration or am unable to find the right words,
all I have to do is put a drop of Brain Power under my tongue, put
Clarity on the back of my neck, and just a drop of Peppermint around
my hairline. They work wonders! And I am able to function at 100%
for hours with just 1-2 drops of each oil.

I have also found it very beneficial to keep Berry Young Juice [now
NingXia Red], Wolfberry bars, and the 3 oils previously mentioned
readily available when traveling. They help keep me alert and
focused, providing an OH-SO-EASY way to stay awake. No caffeine or
sugar required!

For more information on oils and supplements for the brain, be sure
to check suggestions in your Essential Oils Desk Reference (EODR).
Thanks to the pioneering efforts of Gary Young and his company,
Young Living Essential Oils, thousands of men, women, children, and
even animals are now enjoying the miracles of their own,
personal "oil stories."

Enjoy the testimonials and articles below and let me know if you

TESTIMONIALS AND ARTICLES

ALZHEIMERS, BACK PAIN, and SLEEP

Elaine Pinar, LPN, has done many wonderful things to help her Mom
who has Alzheimer's and is in Elaine's care. Elaine tells me:

My 83-year-old Mom, who has a condition characterized by diminishing
brain function [Alzeheimer's], has a problem with being very
confused from about 3 o'clock in the afternoon and into the evening.
Sometimes the
confusion is accompanied by agitation. These last couple of weeks
I've been giving her a capsule with 4-6 drops of Roman Chamomile and
filled to the top with V-6 about noon every day. We've noted that
she doesn't seem to be as confused and is much more calm and relaxed
in the late afternoon and evening. I have a nebulizer running on a
timer and use a variety of oils including Clarity, Lemon, Peace and
Calming, Cedarwood, Brain Power, Lavender and whatever else my
intuition tells me at the time.

We use oils in the morning but use more oils in the afternoon up
until about 8 p.m. when Mom is getting close to bedtime. This
program seems to be working better for us. We ALWAYS use Peace and
Calming in her little diffuser in her room at night and I spritz her
bed linens with Cedarwood or Peace and Calming at bedtime.

Raindrop massages done once a week for six weeks eliminated the need
for my mother to use narcotic pain patches and other prescription
medications for her chronic back pain!! That's just ONE reason I
believe in Raindrops. I am a medical professional (not a doctor) but
not a massage therapist. Raindrop massage was easy to learn - I
learned it from Gary Young at a Level I training and from following
the directions in the EODR. Dr. David Stewart says there's "no wrong
way" to apply the oils, just get them on the body! So, get your oils
out and go for it!!
Good luck!
Blessings,
Elaine

Sage improves memory, study shows
from:
www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/09/02/1062506856781.html?from=storyrhs
Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behaviour 75 (2003) 669-674.
Date released 29 August 2003

New research has proved that sage can improve memory,
confirming centuries-old theories.

British scientists have carried out the first clinical trials with
healthy, young adults and found that those who had taken sage
oil capsules performed significantly better in a word recall test.

The team, from the Medicinal Plant Research Centre (MPRC) at
the Universities of Newcastle and Northumbria, UK, have
provided scientific evidence for claims dating back centuries.

They studied texts by well-known herbalists such as John
Gerard, who wrote about sage in 1597, saying that `It is
singularly good for the head and brain and quickeneth the
nerves and memory", and Nicholas Culpeper, whose 1652 text
says "It also heals the memory, warming and quickening the
senses".

People were known to take sage for memory loss centuries ago
and drank teas and tinctures containing extracts of the herb.

The results of the study are published in the current edition of
the academic journal Pharmacology, Biochemistry and
Behaviour *.

The Newcastle team tested 44 healthy young adults aged
between 18 and 37. Some were given capsules containing sage
oil and others were given placebos.

The volunteers then took part in a word recall test and tested at
intervals to see how many words they could remember. Results
showed that those who had taken the sage oil consistently
performed better than those who had taken placebos.

Sage is being investigated as a potential treatment for
Alzheimer's Disease after earlier research by the MPRC found
that it inhibits an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase (AChE)
which breaks down the chemical messenger acetylcholine.
Alzheimers', the most common form of dementia which affects
an estimated 10 million people worldwide, is accompanied by a
drop in acetylcholine.

Many of the current drugs, such as donepezil, have unpleasant
side effects and doctors are keen to find alternatives. No side-
effects were noted in the sage trial.

Further investigation is needed to find out why sage is so
effective but researchers think it could be a combination of
chemicals in the oil which have an effect on AChE and which
give it antioxidant, oestrogenic and anti-inflammatory properties,
also considered to be of value in Alzheimer's therapy.

Lead researcher Nicola Tildesley said: "This proves how
valuable the work by the old herbalists is, and that they shouldn't
just be ignored because they were writing centuries ago.

She added that people who were taking exams should not get
too excited by the findings: "Test would need to be carried on
people over a longer period of time to prove that sage improves
exam performance but we don't have any plans to do this at
present.

"However, this research does have serious implications for
people suffering from Alzheimer's Disease, as it will inform drug
research and development."

The research was funded by Oxford Natural Products. The
MPRC is carrying out another clinical trial where sage is being
tested on people with Alzheimer's, and results from this are
expected shortly.

BERRY YOUNG JUICE AND SULFURZYME

From: Nicole Hutnik
Subject: Brain Aneurysm

A new Young Living distributor collapsed in her house
very late on Friday night. She had a ruptured brain
aneurysm. Lynn Cutler was transported by life flight
to Cleveland Clinic and began emergency brain surgery
around 6:00 am Saturday morning. They were not sure
she would make it through the surgery. She was in
surgery for 8 hours. Everything seemed to be going
well when she developed complications (a bleed) and
went back in for another emergency brain surgery. She
awoke last night from her medically induced coma and
is talking! They are hopeful that the effects will be
minimal!

The doctors at the Cleveland Clinic said that her
blood work was amazing and wanted to know what she was
taking. Her husband happened to have all of the
information about BYJ and Sulfurzyme and gave it to
the doctor. The doctor came back later and said "This
is good stuff - Keep it up"! <GRIN ;)

Her husband is placing the following order:
Aroma Life
Frankincense
Cypress

They predict she will be in the hospital for a month.
Please pray for her, her husband, and their 23 year
old son.

BRAIN SWELLING AND BLOOD CLOT

    Date: Mon, 14 Feb 2005
    From: Kimberly
Subject: Re: Brain aneurysm

Hi Nicole,

It might be good for her to try Helichyrsum, just
apply to the brain stem area and to the underside of
the big toes.

A friend had a blot clot and swelling in his brain and
we applied Helichrysum while he was in the hospital.
The next day, the brain was back to normal size and
the clot had dissolved. His doctors were considering
surgery before the clot dissolved.

After she gets out of the hospital, regular raindrop
technique application could help get her back up to
speed.

Hope this helps.

"OILS FOR CLEAR THINKING AND A SHARPER MIND"

In 1999, I decided to take a 3 year course in Acupuncture. I had not
studied full time for over 30 years and my first semester was a huge
shock! My first semester classes were Anatomy and Pysiology I and
II, Chinese Philosophy, Chemistry and Acupressure Massage! I was
swamped but the chemistry was the subject that was the worst. I was
seriously afraid I would fail the class.

One day I was doing some chemistry problems and I wasn't making any
progress. A friend said why don't you try this and handed me a
bottle of Brain Power. I looked at the label and said I'm sure I
could definately use some Brain Power but what is this and how do I
use it? He said it's a blend of essential oils. You just inhale
deeply first in one nostril, then the other nostril and then in both
together. Imagine when you breathe in that you're drawing it across
your brain. So I did that and then I went back to the chemistry
problem I was working on and as soon as I looked at it, I got it!
Not only that I realized that it was really quite simple.

I got some Brain Power and then I heard about a study in which
Peppermint was diffused in a classroom of students and they did 28%
better on their exams than the class who didn't get the Peppermint.
So i bought a bottle of Peppermint too. These two oils became my
constant study companions during the rest of the semester, in class
and at home.

My results at the end of the term where that I got 90% in Chemistry
and was second in my class! I was so impressed with the results
these essential oils gave me that I changed my course to
Aromatherapy!

INFLAMMATION AND ALZHEIMERS

You will be reading more and more in the general news about
the role of inflammation caused by free radicals in all of our

who ask why do we need this product?

Thanks Tara Harper for the following great testimonial.

HI everyone!
I was listening to a training tape a couple of weeks ago from 2000
or 2001. In this tape Gary spoke about inflammation and the role it
plays in the disease process.... as I was walking through the
checkout stand at the local grocery the most recent TIME magazine
caught my eye. The front page story is: THE SECRET KILLER. To read
further it states: The surprising link between INFLAMMATION and
Heart Attacks, Cancer, Alzheimers and other diseases. I thought
well isn't that interesting. Paid for my stuff and left it sitting
right in the rack. So the other day I am at a client's house and
there it is! A brand new TIME magazine sitting right there. I
picked it up and said, well, I want to read that article, but
proceeded to finish my job and left the home.

So the other night I am going to work a 10 hour shift and boy I
wanted something to read by in the dark as my client slept so I went
looking for a book light...... when what to my wandering eyes should
appear but the last copy of TIME in the magazine rack, oh dear!
Okay I bought it.... sheeesh! This article touches on all of the
major dis-eases that our country faces today. Heart attacks,
diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, and alzheimers, BUT the
really cool thing is how the article breaks down the inflammation
process to a cellular level so even LAY people can understand. I
know this article is not an essential oil article.... but it sure
does provide an awesome training tool with our own missing link of
the Essential Oils.

So what are the combating suggestions of this article? Lose weight,
30 minutes of exercise a day most days of the week, flossing your
teeth, eating fruits and vegetables and fish, FOR THE SUBSTANCES
THAT DISABLE FREE RADICALS. (and in walks Berry Young Juice!) [Ed.
Note: Now Ningxia Red!] So there you have it.... TIME magazine
making my job easier!

Have oils will prosper!
Have a great week!

AROMATHERAPY HELPS ALZHEIMER'S PATIENTS
alzheimersupport.com

Light therapy, scented balms ease sleeplessness, study finds
Light and aromatherapy can ease the sleeplessness and agitation
common among patients with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of
dementia, British researchers said Tuesday, August 19, 2003.

"(Alzheimer's) patients who sat in front of a bright light box for
two hours each morning for two weeks slept longer and more deeply
than people who sat in front of a dim light for the same period of
time," Harry Allen of the Manchester Royal Infirmary in England told
a medical conference on the elderly.

Light therapy improved patients' sleep quality most during the
winter months, when there was less daylight, Allen told the Congress
of the International Psychogeriatric Association.

The patients' tossing and turning was measured with a wristwatch-
like device called an "actigraph." An alternative to buying a "light
box," which costs around $150, was to plan patient activities during
the brightest parts of the day and position them facing a bright
window when indoors, Allen said.

"Most of us have had the experience of feeling our mood improve when
we are exposed to bright sunlight," Allen said. "Too often we shut
people with dementia up in dark rooms with little opportunity to see
the sun or other bright light, which can make their symptoms worse."
In a four-week study of how aromatherapy can affect elderly dementia
patients, roughly one-third suffered fewer bouts of agitation when
they were rubbed with a lemon balm compared to one in 10 who showed
improvement when rubbed with an odorless sunflower oil.

"Patients exposed to lemon balm also showed significant improvements
in the quality of life, including a decrease in social withdrawal
and an increase in constructive activities," study leader Clive
Ballard of the University of Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne told the
conference.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The safety and life-changing effects of essential
oils are dependent on their purity and their quality. Generally
speaking, essential oils that you find in department stores, and
even health food stores, are of uncertain quality at best. I have
personally used oils from many other companies, and found that most
are a waste of money. That is why I only use Young Living oils and
oil-enhanced products. Don't settle for less. Choose the best!

Sunshine, Suntan, and Sun-Sensitizing Oils
by David Stewart, Ph.D., R.A., D.N.M.

It's summer time in the Northern Hemisphere and time for
sunshine and suntans. This is a time also to be aware that certain
essential oils can promote sunburn.

Such oils are said to be phototoxic. If applied directly to the skin
followed by exposure to sunlight or a tanning light, the molecules
of these oils amplify the untraviolet (UV) portion of the spectrum
and can cause long-term, even permanent, skin discoloration as
well as severe sunburn.

It is sometimes said that all citrus oils are phototoxic, but this is
not true. Among the citrus oils that are expressed (cold-pressed)
from the rinds, some are phototoxic and some are not. Among
citrus oils distilled from the rinds, none are phototoxic. However,
distilled citrus oils are rarely used in aromatherapy because they
are less aromatic and do not possess the therapeutic properties
of the expressed oils. Distilled citrus oils are mostly used for
flavorings.

The common essential Oils Considered Phototoxic are as follows:

 Angelica . . . . . . . . . . (Angelica archangelica)
 Bergamot . . . . . . . . . (Citrus bergamia)
 Bitter Orange . . . . . . (Citrus aurantium)
 Grapefruit. . . . . . . . . (Citrus paradisi)
 Lemon. . . . . . . . . . . . (Citrus limon)
 Lime . . . . . . . . . . . . . (Citrus aurantifolia)
 Petitgrain . . . . . . . . . (Citrus aurantium)
 Rue. . . . . . . . . . . . . . (Ruta graveolens)

Some authorities would also include fennel (Foeniculum vulgare),
anise (Pimpinella anisum), and cumin (Cuminum cyminum) on this
list, while others omit grapefruit oil (Citrus paradisi), which is
considered only mildly phototoxic. Notice that the list does not
include all of the citrus oils, only some of them.

According to Tisserand and Balacs in their book, Essential Oil Safety,
the expressed oils of Mandarin (Citrus reticulata), Sweet Orange
(Citrus sinensis), Tangelo (Citrus x hybrida), and Tangerine (Citrus
nobilis) are not phototoxic. Neither are the distilled oils of lemon,
lime, and grapefruit, even though their expressed oils are. Neroli oil
(Citrus aurantium), extracted from blossums of the bitter orange
tree, is also non-phototoxic while petitgrain distilled from the leaves
of the same species is phototoxic. (Note that petitgrain is listed
above while neroli is not.)

The Chemistry of Photoxicity

The chemical constituents responsible for phototoxicity in oils are
all furanoids. Furanoids are compounds containing a group of four
carbon atoms, four hydrogen atoms, and a one oxygen atom
configured in the shape of a pentagon (five-sided) called the furan
ring. Compounds incorporating a furan ring into its molecular
structure are called furanoids.

Furan rings have the unique property of having dimensions that can
resonate with the frequencies of ultraviolet light, thus amplifying
the rays of sunshine that cause burn, discoloration, and damage to
the skin. Oddly enough, under the right circumstances, furan
compounds can also cancel the UV portion of the spectrum in a way
that absorbs solar energy, steps down the frequency, and dissipates
t harmlessly as heat. In these instances, the furanoids are not
phototoxic but, instead, act as sun screens offering protection
from the destructive rays of the sun.

Whether a specific furanoid compound acts as an amplifyer or a
destroyer of UV energy depends on the structure of the specific
compound as well as the other companion compounds in the oil
that may quench its phototoxic tendencies. Hence, one cannot
just list all of the essential oils containing furanoids and say
whether they are solar-toxic or solar-protective. Some with the
highest concentrations of furanoids are protectors while some
with much smaller amounts are toxic.

The oils with the highest concentrations of furanoids are myrrh
(Commiphora myrrha) containing 23% fruanoids, fleabane (Conyza
canadensis) with 8%, and peppermint (mentha piperita) with 5% -
none of which are phototoxic.

Bitter orange oil (Citrus aurantium) contains 4% furanoids,
lemon (Citrus limon) 2%, and lime (Citrus aurantifolia) also only 2%,
yet all three of these are definitely phototoxic. The most
phototoxic of oils of bergamot (Citrus bergamia) expressed
from the rind and yet it contains only 3% furanoid compounds.

These differences lie in which variety of furanoid is present. The
most hazardous type of furanoid is a class of compounds called
furanocoumarins. Yet, even furanocoumarins can be quenched
with the right companion compounds.

Another factor is the other compounds that comprise the rest
of the oil. Some types of compounds, such as sesquiterpenes,
can make unruly compounds behave. When one compound
mitigates the negative charactics of another compound, this is
called quenching. In some circumstances, quenching compounds
can make phototoxic compounds photosafe.

Because of the complexity of the causes of phototoxicity and
possibilities for quenching, one cannot simply look at a chemical
analysis of an oil and know if an oil is photosafe or not. The best
advice is to go by a list, such as the one given above, that is based
on actual experiences people have had with the oils.

Myrrh: Breaker of all the Rules

Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) is a puzzle. It contains at least ten
types of furanoid compounds (20-27%), more than any other oil‹
yet it is not phototoxic. Many ancient Egyptians, who lived under
the intense tropical desert sun, applied myrrh oil on their skin daily
without sunburn reactions. In fact, the cones seen on the heads
of figures in Egyptian heiroglyphics were fat saturated with myrrh
allowed to melt slowly and run down over their bodies as a
protection from the sun and as a repellent to biting insects, as
well.

Queen Esther of the Old Testament (Esther 2:12) was massaged
daily with liquid myrrh for six months prior to her marriage to the
king and apparently suffered no ill skin effects from sunlight. In
fact, myrrh seems to act more like a sunscreen, protecting the
skin from ultraviolet light instead of increasing its sensitivity to
burn. Yet it contains major quantities of furanoids.

Evidently, there are compounds in myrrh (perhaps the sesqui-
terpenes) that mitigate or quench the solar amplifying properties
of the furans. In fact, the quenchers in myrrh cause the furanoids
to resonate in such a way as to dissipate UV energy in harmless
forms (like heat), thus offering sunscreen protection‹the
opposite of phototoxicity.

What if I Put Lemon Oil in my Drinking Water and Sit in the Sun?

Phototoxic oils pose problems only if applied to the skin followed
by exposure to a source of ultraviolet light. Even when the
phototoxic oil is diluted in a neutral carrier oil, it can still cause
photoxic reactions when applied directly to skin exposed to
sunlight. There is no risk of phototoxic reactions unless oils have
been applied directly to the skin.

Using phototoxic oils for flavorings in food and drink poses no
hazard. It is only on the skin that there is a problem. So don¹t
worry if you like a few drops of bergamot or lemon in your drinking
water while you sunbathe. Just keep it off of your exposed skin.

Most authorities recommend waiting twelve hours following an
application of phototoxic oils to the skin before exposure to sunlight
or the UV radiation of a tanning booth. This would be true even if
one tried to wash them off since they almost immediately penetrate
deep into the skin, beyond the touch of soap and water. Applying oils
with furanocoumarins after sundown, before going to bed, poses no
problems then or the next day, provided one is not retiring to a
tanning bed that evening.

One can go out into sunlight after applying phototoxic oils if the
parts of the body receiving the oils are well covered with clothing.
That would be sufficient protection.

People with fair skins are more susceptible to phototoxic reactions
than those of color. In fact, experiments have shown that with a
person of brown or black skin it takes up to seven times more oil
with furanocoumarins to elicit a phototoxic response than with a
Caucasian. A suntan gives a white person some increased
protection.

What About the Potential Phototoxicity of Blends?

The table of essential oils considered phototoxic given above is a
list of single oils. If a phototoxic oil is included in a blend of oils,
the blend will also be phototoxic. Young Living blends containing
phototoxic components (usually citrus) include Gentle Baby®, Joy®,
White Angelica®, Citrus Fresh®, Thieves®, RC®, and several others.
Read the labels.

So enjoy your oils and the summer sun, but don't get burned. A
word to the wise is sufficient.

Hello,

I am desperately looking for any advice regarding holistic treatments for
stoke victims.

My partner's mother (aged 69) had a stroke in winter 2003, which has caused
memory loss and left her unable to express herself. She needs to be watched
most of the time, in case she does something dangerous (once she nearly
swallowed a few dates with stones in them), inappropriate (like emptying her
bowels on the carpet) or in case she leaves the house and gets lost. She
doesn't seem to remember people's names, can't answer simple questions and
just giggles all the time, or once in a while cries for hours for no reason.

There have been moments, though, when she was able to put a logical sentence
together, address her family by their names and answer questions correctly.
She has had all medical tests done and apparently the only thing that is
wrong is a small clot in the brain.

Her husband, 5 years younger than her, has a knee trouble and his doctor
said he shouldn't be looking after anyone else, but - quite rightly - he
said he wouldn't put his wife in a nursing home, as she would then lose any
chance of recovery.

Sadly, the time has come when my partner's father feels unable to cope with
the burden of caring for someone else and is considering placing his wife in
a home in a couple of weeks (although I don't know how he would manage
financially). The family is all destroyed.

As a young therapist I feel guilty I haven't done anything for her - every
time I asked if I could give her a treatment, her husband suggested I did it
another time. I guess my partner's father does not have much belief in
holistic therapies, although his wife used to see a herbalist before she had
a stroke. Moving in with them is not an option due to my partner's and my
job situation, but I feel I need to do something to prevent her being put in
a home (reflexology and essential oils would be probably the most tolerable
for her). I know I should have done something ages ago, however I wasn't
fully qualified in therapies at the time when she suffered the stroke.

A note on my background in holistic therapies: I am qualified in
Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Hopi Ear Candling, Sports Injuries and Remedial
Massage, Swedish, Massage, Kerala Massage, as well as Traditional Chinese
Cupping and Moxibustion. I have read about and am familiar with basic
concepts of Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Has any of you had any experience or heard about a stroke victim recovering
from a similar state, especially with the help of holistic therapies? Any
advice would be most welcome. Please feel free to email me on
dr_antares21@.... We desperately need help and hope.

Thank you very much in advance.

Paulina

Hello everyone! My name is Christy and I am a new member so I thought
I'd introduce myself…

I'm a 33yr old WAHM in Oklahoma and I love to spend time with my
family, learn about new things and get to know new people. I
personally feel that we all have many choices; we just need to educate
ourselves in order to make the right ones for us, individually.

I know very little about working with essential oils and am looking to
learn more. I'd also like to meet some like-minded individuals.

Hope everyone is doing well and I look forward to getting to know you
all!

Welcome to the group! Here's some great information on Lavender Oil to
get you started working with the oils. I'm sure others will share lots
of their knowledge with you.

Blessings!
Tracy in Washington State

According to the Essential Oils Desk Reference (Essential Science
Publishing, page 57), lavender is a universal oil with MANY different
applications. It may help arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, convulsions,
depression, earaches, burns, sunburns, dandruff, allergies, headaches,
insomnia, scarring, skin conditions...."

In ancient times the sweet smelling herb lavender was respected more
for its medicinal properties than its scent, while today the opposite
is true. Thus, modern society is ignoring this oil's greatest attribute-
-its health-giving properties. During Biblical times it was used for
wound healing. In ancient Persia and Greece lavender was used as a germ
killer. In Medieval times it was famous as an antidote for
psychological and neurological disorders. During the 18th century it
was part of a world-renowned formula for beautifying skin. Recent
research proves that Essence of Lavender is an invaluable agent for
damaged skin.

However, lavender is not just for the skin or beautification.
Researcher A. Bissas notes in her article Lavender-the Essential Oil
that currently lavender is successfully used for combating insomnia,
tension, water retention, bad breath, sinus congestion, dandruff, and
sluggish circulation. In particular, she notes that this is a major
relaxing agent for virtually any condition associated with stress or
tension, and that would include practically all illnesses.

Europeans have used it for decades to treat migraines. The French
scientist Rene Gattefosse was the first to discover lavender's ability
to promote tissue regeneration and speed wound healing when he severely
burned his arm in a laboratory accident. Dr. Jean Valnet, the famous
French essential oil expert, used lavender oil for a wide range of open
wounds. Tisserand notes that it exerts a calming action on the heart
and nerves, as well as the digestive tract. He describes its European
use for colic, nausea, vomiting, gas, and heartburn. Lavender has also
been clinically evaluated for its relaxing effects. It may be used to
cleanse cuts, bruises, and skin irritations. Today, lavender is one of
the essential oils to be listed in the British Pharmacopoeia.

Hi Joyers:

I have used Lavender for many different challenges (good night's sleep,
drippy nose and especially burns). While making myself a Hot Fudge
Sundae one day, I accidentally tipped the jar slightly and hot, bubbly
fudge sauce coated all four fingers of my left hand. The pain was
unbelievable. I immediately rinsed off the fudge with cold water. Then
grabbed my bottle of Lavender and put a couple drops on each finger and
massaged it in. Almost, immediate relief. Two hours later I repeated
the Lavender and went to bed. In the morning, all four fingers showed
no signs of a burn. The skin was not pink or tight with movement. I
will always keep a bottle of Lavender in the kitchen for burns and cuts
and, of course, one bottle in the bedroom for a peaceful sleep.

Thank you for letting me share!

Dear Joy:

During a trip on a airplane, I happened to sit next to a woman who was
terrified of flying. While we were waiting to take off, she leaned over
and confided that she sometimes had "panic attacks" while flying.

I didn't say much but I wondered what "panic attacks" meant! During the
take-off, she was white-knuckled but calm and I thought, "That wasn't
too bad!" and went back to reading my magazine.

The captain came on and announced that our trip was just about over and
we would soon begin our descent to our destination. As the plane was
just starting to descend, she became very agitated and started moving
around in her seat. Then she started bouncing up and down on her seat.
Then her arms started flailing and she was breathing very heavily. I
looked at her in horror as all the other passengers did as, by now, she
was really creating a commotion. Reaching into my purse, I uncapped the
lavender, held it under her nose and instructed her to "Breathe
deeply". 20 seconds later she was calm.

I was amazed as everyone else that the lavender had such a quick effect
and I sure did get the questions from everyone around asking what was
in the bottle!

Don't fly without it!

Hello Joyous ones,

My grandchildren were driving our garden tractor, and fell into a hole
with one tire and couldn't move it. I went up to help rock and push it
out, and OW!!!! I put my leg right against the hot radiator, and burned
a patch above my knee the size of a half dollar, and another bigger
one, not quite so badly. I didn't have my oils with me. Darn. When I
got home, I looked at the big clear blister, and thought, "Well, it
won't do any good at this point, but to keep the blister from popping,
and oozing, I decided to put a band aid on it. But first, I soaked the
blister with lavender, then put the band aid on.

A couple days later, I removed the band aid, and viola, no blister, and
hardly a trace of the burn. I was amazed that that big blister had

would soon be a blood blister and she was crying like it hurt A LOT
(and this is a kid who doesn't cry all that much). I went and got my
lavender and added a drop to her fingertip. It appeared to feel better
quite quickly and I thought she had forgotten all about it; but after
reading together for about 10 mins, she said "My finger better Mommy".
We'll see tomorrow what colors develop ...

A little dab'll do 'ya, eh?

Hi Caleb,

This is really a great idea and here is one of my testimonies. My dh
owns a sheet metal manufacturing business. He often gets cuts on his
hands and arms that are quite deep. Sheet metal also has an application
on it that is oily and when cut it burns like crazy.

Years ago, he would get cut and it would always infect, take weeks to
heal and leave a very nasty scar, no matter what size the cut. Since we
now have lavender, he puts a drop or two on the cut and it immediately
closes the wound, stops the bleeding and starts the healing. It also
takes away the sting.

We have found that if he does not have any lavender with him, he has
gone a full day until he gets home to put it on the cut. It will still
take the same action.

Love that Lavender!

I use Lavender on my kids burns and hurts all the time. Just a few days
ago, my two year old fell down and scraped his elbow. It was skinned up
and bleeding. I took him inside and put a drop or two on the scrape and
covered it with a Band-Aid. That night we removed the Band-Aid and it
looked like it was almost healed. There was a scrape lower down his arm
that was a comparable "hurt" a few days older that never had the
lavender applied to it. The older scrape had a big ugly scab and looked
like it had a few days still before it would heal. What a difference!
The new scrape with the lavender was already almost gone. There is no
scab on it, just darken skin.

Hello Everyone!

Last summer I had a run-in with our garden tiller. It hit me right on
the side of the knee. My knee immediately began to swell and turn
purple. When I could get up I hobbled to the house to get the lavender
bottle. I sat down and poured the lavender on my knee. As I sat there
the pain began to subside and the swelling started to go down. Within
an hour there was no pain and very little swelling left. My knee was
tender for a few days but I did not limp and it was only slightly
discolored. So when someone gets a bruise around here we grab the
lavender bottle!

Lavender Lovers,

This summer, when the sun was not shining, I thought I'd try to get a
tan on the tops of my feet, so I could wear sandals in public, without
my feet looking so white. Since I always wear tennis shoes while mowing
lawn, my feet never had an opportunity to tan. Of course, I did not put
on any skin lotion before mowing, so after about 2 hours of exposure to
the outdoors, my feet were burning terribly. When the sun is not
shining, a person often gets a worse burn. I immediately rubbed
Lavender over the tops of my feet, and fifteen minutes later, the
terrible burning had subsided at least 90%. I repeated the Lavender
application about an hour later, and there was no more pain.

Wow, was I happy to have Lavender!

Hello,

I have several stories. The first was when I saw my sister-in-law's
most unusual bruise on the palm of her hand. It was a nasty one and I
asked about it. She said she was sure a fall had sprained her hand, and
she had reached for Lavender and spread it all over the top of her
hand. The TOP of her hand had NO bruise, but she failed to use it on
the bottom (palm), and it was seriously bruised. What was really
strange, she showed me between her fingers, and you could literally see
where the lavender had dripped. Where the lavender had not dripped were
black and blue bruises. Lavender does really help prevent bruising in a
way I've NEVER seen or heard of any product doing so.

Several months later, I was visiting friends, and one of their children
slammed a door on their hand. Amidst the screaming, which the parents
were ignoring, I grabbed my Lavender, asked if I could put some on, got
permission, and did so. The tears stopped quickly, and I asked this 6-
year-old how she felt. She told me much better, that it didn't hurt any
more at all. The parents were amazed.

One of the most intriguing things I've heard of on this chat line
several years ago, someone put a single drop of Lavender in a white
cake batter before baking. Reportedly, everyone goes crazy over the
cake. (I haven't tried it, but it sounds really delightful!) Sometime
when my life isn't so crazy, I'm going to make one.

Ah lavender...here's two for you...

1. Last Christmas while making a custard on the stove, the
mixture "spit" at me and a dollop of hot custard landed right below the
lens of my glasses...so it missed my eye...ouch! I could feel the
burn...immediately wiped it off...still burning..."THINK" I told
myself..."What to do?" Lavender! I immediately put a drop on the
spot...instant pain relief and no visible mark by the morning.

2. My friend's son, (age 14) was sooo sick with a high fever and lung
infection...the usual medications weren't helping...he was in severe
pain due to the chest congestion...crying, unable to get out of bed. My
friend had just signed up for YL and had Peppermint and Lavender. (I
know this is only about lavender but the peppermint DID break the
fever)...she rubbed a few drops of Lavender on his back and he was off
to sleep within 10 minutes...

I could go on...but....love that lavender.

Hello all,

The first YL oil I used was the Lavender. We were rushing off for a
vacation and had to check on our neighbors dogs. They were in a
makeshift pen in the garage. As soon as they spotted me with their
food, they got really unruly and knocked a board down which hit my
shinbone gouging out a quarter sized area. Ouch!!! Bled like a stuck
pig too! Skinny leg and the gouged area was right over the bone. I
remembered I had been given a tiny sample of lavender oil at a seminar
and thought they said it was good for cuts/wounds. As soon as I applied
it, the profuse bleeding stopped as well as the pain! I continued to
apply it for several days instead of going to get stitches and the area
healed so nicely and scarless, I can hardly find where it was.

My grandson knocked a heavy stocking holder off a cabinet and it hit
him on his temple. My daughter called saying he had knocked his brains
out! I knew she was probably exaggerating, but I drove beyond the speed
limit anyway to arrive as she was heading out the door to her car with
him for the ER. I said hold on a minute, let me see! Head was wrapped
in a bloody towel. As soon as I got a look at it, I dropped 2 drops of
lavender oil on the area and the bleeding stopped instantly. He was
relieved and seemed to calm faster too from smelling the oil. No trip
to ER needed. We healed that deep wound area without a scar, which my
daughter swore up and down he would have. Not so!

I call lavender the mother oil. If you couldn't have another oil, you'd
be set with lavender. My hubby used it for a burned hand. My friend
uses it for migraines. My downline has used it for respiratory relief.
A 92-yo lady used it to heal a much worse wound on her leg than I had
experienced. She wasn't a candidate for stitches with her paper thin
skin and was sent home from the ER with it still bleeding and hurting.
3 drops of lavender (after 2 wks. of the treatment of triple antibiotic
ointment and a gauze dressing) stopped the bleeding and began the
needed healing after the dressing and ointment was discontinued. It
healed in about another week and almost scarless. She got right back
out into her garden and was glad to tell the doctor that she didn't
need to stay in the house with her leg elevated for the estimated 6
weeks he had told her.

Love the Mother Oil,

Celeste

Hi, Oilers,

Trigger finger is what got me started on essential oils. For
my "trigger finger" my physician prescribed anti-inflammatories and
Cortisone pills which didn't help. Then there were the cortisone shots,
which worked...for awhile. My rheumatologist said that the third time
my middle finger locked (not a good sight to see), I'd have to have
surgery. My finger middle locked for the third time. That's when
someone invited me to a meeting about Young Living Essential Oils. A
few of the oils were passed around and we were invited to use any of
the oils. I rubbed a drop of lavender oil on the base of the finger on
my palm where the physician gave me the cortisone shot. I dared the oil
to work, and when nothing happened, I wondered what good those oils
were. Little did I know that this was the start of my adventure with YL
essential oils. The next day my finger unlocked and I didn't need the
surgery. At first I had to use the lavender oil several times daily,
then at less frequent intervals. Now I rarely need to use the oil.
Sometime during the year when my finger seems to be tightening I use a
drop of lavender on my palm at the base of the finger and everything is
fine again.

Be well,

Jeannie

A friend of mine said every time he feels a cold sore coming on he
pulls out the lavender and applies it anytime he is aware of a little
itching, pain, or whatever. Sometimes several times an hour at first.
It almost always keeps it from erupting for him. I tried it, it works
sometimes for me but I usually get them when I've really pushed myself
too much, and often (dummie) don't have my lavender handy. When I do it
right, it usually works for me too! I favor it and sometimes ravensara
(cooling and creates an unfriendly environment for viruses) during the
first and second stage of the sore, then if it crusts over I favor the
sandalwood or vetiver or myrrh, unctuous, thicker, protective healing
ones.

Hi

We have had great success with cracked skin and for tinea using
manuka oil - it needs to be good quality manuka oil from manuka trees
grown at higher altitudes.

Are you sure the cracked skin (being very deep) are not a veruca? ie
a wart growing inwards instead of outwards - if it is, it might need
to be killed with a wart paint.

I use myrtle oil, tea tree oil, and manuka oil in a carrier oil on a
rotational basis - 1 week each - with a sinal massage and a massage
across the forehead and find it really useful for relieving my
sinusitis.

What do others out there use - has anyone else tried these oils this
way (singly in a carrier oil).

I think there are several ways to correct the heels but it will take time.
At night soak, like the other suggested and then coat with a good solution,
I used to use vasiline. And then wear socks to bed. As the skin soften, use
a pumice stone to take off the dead skin. [maybe after the soaking]
NowI might make a massage oil using tea tree oil. And massage this well
into the heels.
Now the internal, drink plenty of water, take a good multi-vit and probably
Vit C and E.
I used to have to work on my heels before sandal season but now I never have
a problem. I think I take so many vits and herbs that I solved the problem,
but I dont' know what is exactly the solution.
