TURTLE'S LIFE

A high-powered corporate executive came into a doctor's office
for a checkup. He showed signs of overwork and stress. He was
warned to slow down, to take up a hobby -- perhaps painting -- to
relax. He readily agreed.

The next day the executive phoned and announced enthusiastically,
"Doc, this painting is wonderful! I've already done ten."
We don't need to be corporate executives to suffer from too much
negative stress. It's easy to feel overwhelmed. You may be
wondering this very minute whether you have time to read this
message!

E. B. White once reported in the humor magazine THE JOYFUL
NOISELETTER, that turtles live an exceptionally long life.
Scientists, he cited, are searching their blood for some clues to
their longevity. He speculated that perhaps the turtles' blood
vessels stay in such nice shape because of the way they conduct
their lives. They rarely miss an opportunity to swim and relax in
the sun. No two turtles ever lunched together with the idea of
promoting something. They do not go to meetings and conferences.
No turtle ever phoned another turtle back. They never use phrases
like "implementation," "hard core," or "in the last analysis."

Maybe we don't need to be a turtle to find solace. Nor do we need
to change jobs and move to the country. Slowing down and learning
to hear the music, instead of clatter, can soothe one's soul in
the midst of a busy life.

William Henry Channing gives us an excellent model for whole and
happy living, free from negative anxiety and unhealthy stress. We
can hardly do better than this:

"To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather
than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be
worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to study
hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to
stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart;
to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasions,
hurry never. In a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and
unconscious, grow up through the common. This is to
be my symphony."
