Right in the middle of my 27 Fling Boogie I heard
the unmistakeable sound.
The trash truck was one door away. There I stood,
hands holding an extra large trash bag full of
"stuff" and I wondered momentarily. Do I run out
and flag the trash man down just in the nick of
time, or do I allow him to go by and have this
be the first addition into next week's trash
collection?
I had been having a somewhat challenging morning. Nothing
was falling into place simply, silly little obstacles were
turning into gargantuan monoliths so I invoked the call of
the 27 Fling Boogie, an exercise I practice from the
website, http://www.flylady.net/
I had gotten a smallish bag filled from baby Sam's room
and had emptied a basket where I had placed my crumbled
paper trash and realized I was on a roll and did not
want to stop.
At this point the trash collector was no where in eye or
ear shot so with reckless abandon, I collected another
trash bag. This one was for the serious, not faint of
heart clutter clearer.
A gleeful decluttering zealot, I cruised through my
office low to the ground so the targets, any extra
clutter, would not sense my close proximity and run
into the corner with hiding dustbunnies.
"GOTCHA!" I laughed as I placed the lid to the
shoebox from Emma's new shoes from our Payless
expedition yesterday. It was over my laugh that
I heard the rumble which told me, "Its now or later.
Trash gone today or trash for the next six days."
Remembering that procrastination looks like doing
anything later that I could have done now, I chose
to sprint to the sidewalk, trashbag flailing
behind me wildly.
Even the fact that I was wearing an above the
knee denim dress did not bother me. I had on
my shoes, I looked respectable even with the
crazed gleam in my eye.

Over time, I have realized that my own successes
frequently go hand in hand with how much clutter
is living in my physical space. I also realize
that there are only a few other activities
which will get me moving faster than a
quick declutter-space-clearing.
To keep your own momentum, here are some
decluttering practices for you to use
as experiments.
#1) Whenever you bring anything new into your space,
take at least one old thing out of your space.
As soon as possible bag it up and donate it,
trash it, or take it to a friend in need.
#2) If you have small children in the house,
make clean up time a fun time with music and
games. March through the house picking up,
or put on special "Pick Up Stuff" hats and
carry baskets to put stuff into which is
destined for either the trash can or its
appointed place in the house. (I have been
told this might work with less inspired
spouses, though I have no proof!)
#3) Do a clutter sweep twice a day, either
once at morning and night or midday and night,
depending upon where you spend your day.
No matter whether you are brand new to
decluttering or a decluttering pro, this one
step will make a huge difference. Refer to
the Flylady site for specifics on the 27 Fling
Boogie and then be sure to DO IT!
#4) Start! Don't talk about the joys of
decluttering, START decluttering! And then
keep it up. And if you miss a day (week, month,
longer?)....don't beat yourself up for the temporary
stopping, just brush yourself off and begin again.
You are worth it!
