RE: [HOHAudiologists] CICs and monitor earphones for listening to cochlear implant processors

Greta,

Have you tried a headset (with large earphones, deep cupped)?

Can you set up a separate program in your CICs for this use?

Do you have any other hearing aids that are t-coil or FM compatible… then we could talk about patch cords, neck loops, etc.

You may need to ask another staff audiologist to listen or train other office staff to help you in the interim, but I believe there is an accommodation for your situation.

Suzanne Yoder, Au.D.

Subject: [HOHAudiologists] CICs and monitor earphones for listening to cochlear implant processors

Hi! I am an Au.D. student doing an extended placement in a pediatric
cochlear implant facility. In order to listen to the cochlear implant
processors to check the microphones, I need to use monior earphones.
The problem is that I wear CICs (Starkey Destiny) and obviously the
earphones won't stay in over my hearing aids. I have gotten custom
earmolds made with adaptors to fit the earphones that were taken over
my hearing aids so the mic opening matches up with the opening of the
molds. However, I am still getting a lot of feedback. Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Greta

Hi Greta, Your question was posted by your supervisor/preceptor on the ASHA listserv, and it's neat to see it here as well. With your use of CICs and Cochlear...

Matt, Greta and Kristen, I have to agree with Sam and Suzanne that regardless of the level of hearing loss, CIC's are eventually going to limit your options...
