I was a first timer at the AAA convention this year and overall I
thought the ALDs were OKAY. Otherwise, I had a great time! I have an
asymmetrical hearing loss and hear only in one ear (mild sloping to
profound SNHL). I wanted to use my personal FM system but I had
forgotten my FM receiver part at home so I tried using the ALD's. The
FM system worked well for the one room that it worked for (Korbel
Ballroom) but I had trouble with the infrared system in other rooms.
I was only able to use it once when the signal transmitter was
directly in front of me. I didn't realize that you had to be within
10 ft. for it to work well. I never really used Infrared systems
before so it was new to me. I really enjoyed the captioning at the
general assembly also and was grateful for it. Perhaps we could have
more presentations captioned next year. While walking around the Expo
Hall I was able to use a personal FM system, and my friend wore it so
I could understand her and the reps that we approached. It worked
really well for me and enjoyed the expo hall a lot more with it. I
was really glad to go to the Deaf and HOH audiologists meeting
Saturday and meet everyone. It's great to know there are others like
me who want to practice audiology!
