Does anyone have experience developing and/or running a
weight management support group? I’d appreciate any info on format,
structure, topics, curriculum, cost, etc.
Yes, I have, but it wasn’t all
that successful, although we may have given up too soon. We started it because
many people in our 10 week program expressed interest in ongoing support. It
was free (I work in Public Health) but we still only consistently had 3-6
people (out of over 100 people) show up each monthly session (and I always sent
email reminders beforehand) so after 6 mos we discontinued it, at least for
now. The most “popular” one that we had was when we combined it
with a guest speaker and had a little interactive chair exercises during. We
sat in a circle instead of “class/row style” with everyone looking
at the speaker. The circle felt more intimate. Our Diabetes Support group
also has monthly guest speakers for their format too and it is pretty well
attended.
Having an educational session or topic
to discuss first or at least get things going seemed to break the ice bit to help
get people to talk about how their doing.
Another national weight management
support group that I’ve looked into a bit and my mom attended for awhile (membership
is cheap, like $30/year) called TOPS (Taking off Pounds Sensibly) http://www.tops.org/desktops.asp
Hope that helps.

Our team has a similar concept of "The Biggest Looser" implemented for the staff that works in the hospital and nursing home. The program lasted 6 months, starting from the winter till summer (Given the norm that most people gain weight during winter). There's a team of 3 RDs that will conduct the initial nutrition screening and assessment. Weekly weigh also conducted and their progress is charted and discuss with the participants. We also record the measurement of waistline, and body fat analysis at the beginning, midpoint and end of the program. In addition, we then have bimonthly meetings/discussion about special topics about health, nutrition (food guide pyramid, portion control, eating out, cooking light, groceries shopping list, reading food labels, etc.) and exercise. We invited the physical therapist to
do our topics about exercise and psychologist to talk about psychological topics (stress management, work & life balance). Luckily the facility premises has a walking path design for the community, where we would held " lunch walk" with the participants at the walking path. We also have the participants pick their team and have them compete against each other for prizes at the end of the program. There's also individual competition for male and female participants.
Overall, it's quite successful program for the staffs that participate and stick through the end. We started with about 80 participants and about 45 still remains at the end. About 800lbs loss combined for all the participants during the 6 months period. There's no extra cost for personel because the 3 RD's rotate the topic discussion and only spend about 1hr per day to prepare for the program. The only cost would be the prize
that provided at the end for the winners, which is being sponsor by the CEO.

Our group consists of 2 RDs, 1 exercise specialist, and 2 social workers. The program that we run is 11 wks. Pre program we do baseline assessments (ht, wt, BMI, waist circumference, etc.) and we also do an initial chart review (hemoglobin A1c, blood lipids, diabetes meds, etc.); we do this post program too to determine any positive changes.
In the program, all participants given a wt loss and activity goal and we teach participants how to count fat grams and calories, healthy eating, teach them about label reading, meal planning, healthy eating out, how to deal with unexpected situations, how to be physically active and incorporate physical activity into their daily routine, how to manage stress, ways to keep motivated, etc.
In addition to class, we have a day of the week that all participants can come to learn new exercises like chair exercises, using therabands, etc. Each team member is assigned a participant to coach throughout the session and to basically keep them going/motivated.
At the end of the program, in most cases, we see positive results-meds decreasing, labs values improve, in addition to the wt loss.
