2005 NATIONAL CONDOM WEEK ACTIVITIES IN TEXAS

The following is a list of National Condom Week-related events taking place
around Texas. National Condom Week, observed February 14-21, 2005, is an
annual campaign to encourage sexually active people to use condoms to help
prevent the transmission of HIV and other STDs. The HIV/STD Comprehensive
Services Branch wishes to thank all of the organizations that sent event
information to the E-Update. Please note that this list is presented for
informational purposes only; the Texas Department of State Health Services
(DSHS) does not necessarily sponsor or endorse any of the events and/or
activities listed.


CROCKETT
As part of National Condom Week, Health Horizons will host a perinatal
health fair in Crockett, Texas at Prince Hall Housing Authorities for women
of child bearing age on February 25, 2005 from 2-6pm. For additional

DALLAS
The HIV/SIDA Coalition of Greater Dallas will observe National Condom Week
by presenting a panel discussion on Tuesday, February 15 at 6pm at the
Resource Center of Dallas, 2701 Reagan St. The rising number of HIV cases in
the Latino community will be the primary focus of this dialogue. Panelists
will explore the barriers to effective HIV prevention and awareness in
Dallas' Latino community. The panel will include Fernie Sanchez, Centralized
Intake Supervisor of AIDS Arms, Ruben Ramirez, Latino Men's Health Programs
Coordinator of the Resource Center of Dallas and Dr. Theresa Barton of
Children's Medical Center. All members of the Dallas community and media
are invited to attend. The HIV/SIDA Coalition will also be holding a
fundraiser for their Client Emergency Assistance Fund Friday, February 18 at
6pm in the Tico Tiko Diner at 2525 Wycliff Av. There will be appetizers,
music, games, and door prizes. For more information, please contact Marie

FORT WORTH
The Tarrant County Public Health Department's Adult Health Services unit
will observe National Condom Week on Thursday, February 17 by conducting
HIV/STD outreach at a local nightclub. Outreach workers will be passing out
condoms and prevention education materials. Please contact Elaine Allen at

Tarrant County MHMR's Street Outreach team will conduct a National Condom
Week event from 8am to 1pm on Wednesday, February 15 at C.A.T.S., 1501 E. El
Paso in Fort Worth, to raise awareness of HIV and STDs in the surrounding
community. The team will distribute condoms and provide free HIV testing
upon request. Refreshments will also be available. For more information,

LONGVIEW/NORTHEAST TEXAS
Special Health Resources of Texas (SHRT) will observe National Condom Week
by outreaching and recruiting in Bowie, Gregg, Harrison and Smith counties
during the week of February 14-21. Recruitment will be in clubs, housing
areas, parks, and other hang-out areas where various groups congregate. SHRT
will educate individuals about HIV/AIDS and STDS and offer protection care
packages. SHRT will also give out cards for one free HIV and syphilis test
at its various locations in these counties. Anyone who tests on February 14
will receive a heart bracelet or necklace. For more information, contact

ODESSA/MIDLAND
The following is a list of Ector County Health Department's activities for
National Condom Week:

Monday, February 14th
Collaboration with Permian Basin Community Centers (PBCC) at Midland
College. Community Promise activities; offering condoms, surveys, HIV
testing, HIV/STD prevention information, and educational pamphlets.

Tuesday, February 15th
Collaboration with PBCC at University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB).
Community Promise Activities; offering condoms, surveys, HIV testing,
HIV/STD prevention information, and educational pamphlets.

Thursday, February 17th
Collaboration with PBCC at Sinciti nightclub. Community Promise activities;
offering condoms, surveys, HIV testing, HIV/STD prevention information, and
educational pamphlets; possible recruitment for peer advocates.

Friday, February 18th
Collaboration at PBCC at Miss Lillie's Nitespot. Community Promise
activities; offering condoms, surveys, HIV testing, HIV/STD prevention
information, and educational pamphlets; possible recruitment for peer
advocates.

SAN ANTONIO
The San Antonio Collaborative will sponsor a health fair in recognition of
National Condom Week at San Antonio College, 1300 San Pedro on Friday,
February 11. There will be interactive booths, education, counseling and
