Dear Colleague: The SOMOS... Project of the Latino Commission on AIDS will be holding a Latino/a Leadership Summit to discuss and develop an action plan that addresses homophobia in the Latino community. When: Thursday, October 28th, 2004 Targeted to: Elected and appointed officials, religious leaders, community activists, business leaders, Executive Directors of health & human services organizations, civil rights advocates, LGBT activists, leaders in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention, etc. Clearly, there is a strong cultural bias against homosexuals. This stigma manifests itself in several ways. It causes many LGBT people to withdraw into a “closeted” lifestyle with little interaction with other LGBTs. Additionally, the isolation of this closeted life - social, familial, religious, etc. - causes many people to disregard medical and psychological symptoms. Consequently many people retreat into lives of shame, self-loathing and stigma and do not take advantage of the various services available to them. The results are often loneliness and depression, isolation from family and peers, anxiety and stress. This frequently leads to higher risk for HIV infection, STIs, substance abuse, domestic violence, unemployment, etc. Studies have indicated that directly addressing homophobia can offset many of the above problems. When a stronger sense of community and support is established for LGBT Latinos, risk behaviors and social deviance is reduced. Addressing homophobia by the entire Latino community is essential for everyone's health. The summit is intended to address these concerns with leaders from the Latino/a community at large and develop a plan for building a sense of belonging and social/institutional acceptance for LGBTs. We hope you can provide your thoughts and expertise to this discussion.
