The AIDS Institute Urges Support for Much Needed HIV/AIDS
Program Funding

Date of Action: Now!

Visit The AIDS Institute online.

The AIDS Institute strongly urges you to make a phone call to
your local senators and representatives, today, September 8, in
regards to the proposed AIDS funding being critically low. All
must act now and advocate for adequate funding for programs that
are critical to prevention, care, treatment and research in the
United States and abroad.

Upon returning to Washington, D.C. from their summer recess, the
Senate and the House of Representatives will be working to
finalize HIV/AIDS expenditure for Fiscal Year 2005, which will
impact care for persons living with HIV/AIDS, as well as HIV
prevention across the nation and throughout the world.

Now that Congress has returned from its summer recess and state
legislators are back in their Washington, D.C. offices, The AIDS
Institute wants to advise you to contact your U.S. Senators and
Representatives and insist that they fully fund the much-needed
HIV/AIDS programs.

Current HIV/AIDS programs that must be adequately funded, as
well as the necessary funding levels for each program, are as
follows:
*Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-Total HIV, STD, TB
Programs, $1.7 billion

*Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Ryan White
CARE
Act, $2.445 billion

*HRSA, Minority HIV/AIDS Initiative, $610 million

*National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Programs, $30.6
billion

*Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Housing Opportunities for
People with AIDS (HOPWA), $350 million

*President's Global AIDS Initiatives $3.6 billion

How to Take Action:
Let Congress know that there are people in their districts that
are concerned about funding for AIDS programs. Contact your
senators and representatives and explain how critical it is that
they understand that the funding levels they are proposing are
not nearly enough to meet either care and treatment needs or the
need for increased HIV prevention services. These HIV/AIDS
programs are critical to the health and well-being of people
living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH/A). Explain to them that they must
fully fund all of the programs listed above.

If you do not know who your members of Congress are, click here
and type in your zip code. This site will provide you with the
addresses and phone numbers for your local district offices, as
well as their offices in Washington, D.C.

After you have obtained this information, you should:

Call your Senators and ask them to fully fund the programs
listed above at the community funding request levels; HIV/AIDS
programs must be funded at the highest possible levels.

Call and ask your Representative to vote for the highest funding
possible for programs targeted to PLWH/A; Refer to the community
funding numbers listed above.
