What Is HDSF? The Huntington's Disease Scholarship Fund.
What Is The Scholarship? A full scholarship for one person to attend the HDSA National Convention
Who Can Apply? Any member of an on-line HD support group needing financial assistance.
Deadline For Applications? Sunday, March 26, 2006
For all our new family members, the HDSF is a dream which became a reality of members from the HD on-line community.... i.e.
our virtual-reality internet families! Through various fund raising projects, the HDSF raises funds each year to help provide scholarships to help members who, due to financial hardships, are unable to attend a Huntington's Disease Society of America's (HDSA) annual national HD convention without some monetary support. A full scholarship typically covers your HDSA convention registration fees, 3 nights at the convention hotel, travel costs and $50.00 per day per diem dollars to cover incidentals like transportation to/from airport, tipping, food, etc.
Typically, to send just one person to an HDSA National Convention can cost anywhere between $1,000.00 to $2,000.00, depending on the location of convention vs where the winner lives, whether or not they can share a room, etc.. So it is the HDSF's hope that the current funds will support one full scholarship and, hopefully a partial scholarship to the HDSA 21st annual convention in Milwaukee June 9-11th!!
We weren't sure if there would be enough funds this year to offer the annual HDSF convention scholarship which would have been a sad demise to a resource that has helped many attend this convention since 2000! However, thanks an anonymous donor, the HDSF Convention Scholarship Fund now has a balance of $1,622.70!!
The HDSF annual convention scholarship is available to any member of an on-line HD support group. Those are groups like Hunt-Dis, the HD Caregivers, the Juvenile HD Caregivers, HD Families, HD At-Risk as well as other on-line internet support groups! If you're reading this, then you ARE a member of an HD on-line group and might be eligible for this scholarship! The only exception, this year, are members from the HDSA National Youth Group [NYA] since they now have their own well funded scholarship fund through HDSA. We're a little late getting this notice out this year so the timing is short! The deadline for submitting an application for a scholarship is NLT then midnight Sunday, March 26th with winner[s] announced by Monday, April 3, 2006.
So if you feel you qualify for the 2006 HDSF scholarship, please fill out your application and get it in before the deadline. We're hoping to see YOU in Milwaukee!! Application forms are available on the HDSF website [above]. For our Yahoo HD On-Line groups, the application is attached.
The experience of attending a HDSA National Convention is invaluable to any family living with Huntington's Disease. It is at a national convention where they can hear, firsthand, the latest in research directly from all of the wonderful scientists and researchers who attend the convention. But it's the comradeship and lasting friendships that everyone makes at a national convention that is so heart-warming. These are treasures that just can not be experienced to the same degree on line. It is, truly, a very rewarding experience for anyone who is able to attend.
Respectfully yours
