Ending the Medicare Disability Waiting Period Act of 2005 (S.1217)
Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) introduced legislation (S.1217) to amend Title
II of the Social Security Act to phase out the 24-month waiting period for
individuals who receive Social Security Disability (SSDI) benefits to
qualify for Medicare coverage, as well as to eliminate any waiting period
for those individuals with life-threatening (this term is not defined)
conditions.
For the rare disease community, it is a fasttrack provision that will allow
those with lifethreatening conditions to get immediate coverage before the
waiting period phases out.
