Announcing the NYA 2007 Convention Scholarship Winners   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #227 of 447 |
Mynelly Perez, HDSA Special Events, is working out the details with each of the applicants for the 2007 HDSA National Youth Alliance Convention Scholarship winners.  However, since the cat's been let out of the bag, this message is to announce that all four applicants who applied for the 2007 scholarship will be receiving FULL SCHOLARSHIPS to attend the HDSA National Convention in Oklahoma June 15-17th!!!

Please join us in CONGRATULATING the following 2007 HDSA National Youth Alliance Scholarship winners:

LAUREN HOLDER  - Lauren who is HD+ and 22 years old currently lives in Connecticut with her husband, Josh, who is in the military. She recently helped coordinate the Helping Hands HD Walk in CT., her first ever HD fund raiser, raising $5,000.00! [CONGRATULATIONS LAUREN!]

As a part of her essay on her scholarship Lauren wrote: "Since I tested positive in November of 2005 I have wanted to attend the national convention.  I have made so many friends in the HD community and going to the convention would not only be a way for me to actually meet them in person, but to associate with people who understand, I mean actually understand, what a life with HD actually involves.  My Father is in mid-stage and my Grandfather is in end-stage HD and I see attending the convention as meaning not only a lot to me, but them too.  Since I can't afford to see my Grandfather one last time, the least I can do is honor him by attending the convention."

ANDREA OTTS  - Andrea who is 28 years old and at-risk lives with her son in Arkansas.  Prior to her Mom going into a nursing home Andrea and her brother helped their Dad with her care while going to college.  Her brother, who is younger, became a nurse because of that experience.

As a part of her essay on her scholarship Andrea wrote: "There were 8 children in my Mom's family and 6 of them tested HD+.  Three have passed away, three are living and two are not old enough to test yet.  I had a son last year and it really has got me to thinking about if he will have it or not.  I think attending the convention will help with some of my concerns and also be positive and give me some hope for my future as well as my family.  I would also like to learn about advancements that are being made for Huntington's and how we can all help."

AMANDA and JAMES RINKEL - Andrea, age 25 and her brother James, age 29, are from Indiana and both tested positive in 2006. As a part of the essay on their scholarship Amanda and James wrote: "We didn't even realize that there was a possibility we could get HD until 3 years ago. Our Grandma had been told that if she made it to 60 without showing symptoms, then she wouldn't have HD. Our family started noticing little things and eventually figured out our Grandma had HD.  Our Mom was tested and so were we.  It would have been really nice to have somebody our ages to talk to about HD after we got tested.  We are really interested in attending the HDSA national convention because we've never been before.  The State convention is very good, but lacks young people our age.  We would really like to talk to other young people that understand not only what HD is, but also understand the feelings that go with it.  The support group we attend does not have anybody our age either.  We also want to go to the convention to find out more about the latest in research and new ways to get involved in that research ourselves."

Amanda also wrote us that she and her brother took over the family business to keep it from going into foreclosures.  They are the 5th generation to run a 103 year old flour mill in Indiana, Greenfield Mills. At the moment there are only 4 full time employees (Dad-David, Mom-Mary, Brother-James, and me-Amanda), and 1 part time employee. They are trying to build  a "Old Mill Store" to help bring in some extra cash flow during the tourism season.  If anyone would like to check out the delicious sounding pancake mixes and other products from the Rinkel family mill, please see the below information!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
We are all very excited for this year's winners especially since none of them have had the opportunity to attend a national convention before!  It is with deep gratitude to everyone who supports the Friday night NYA annual Talent Show at the convention every year and the Saturday night Silent Auction by providing donated items and bidding on them at the convention, along with both the HDSA Chapter and private donations that are made to the NYA Convention Scholarship Fund, because YOU have made it possible for this year's winners to all receive full scholarships!

For any Chapter or person who is interested in contributing to the 2008 HDSA National Youth Alliance Convention Scholarship Fund, please contact Mynelly Perez at HDSA, 1-800-345-4372 Extension 14 or via email at mperez@....  For anyone who is unable to bring an item for the 2007 NYA Silent Auction in Oklahoma, you can still mail one to NYA member Staci Nicholas who will bring it to Oklahoma for you!  Donated items should be mailed to:

Greenfield Mills, Inc. is Indiana’s oldest commercial water-powered flour mill. It was bought by Henry Rinkel in 1904. In 2004 The Mill celebrated 100 years of producing quality old fashioned flour and pancake mix made by the Rinkel family. Here at Greenfield Mills we are celebrating five generations of quality milling. We make several different types of flour to suit all of your baking needs, and make 11 different flavors of Pancake mix to suit individual tastes.  "We also taste test every batch of pancake mix to make sure that the quality is not just good, but great!"

Please keep in mind Amanda & James are just building up this side of the business, so information on Gift Baskets & Boxes and Fundraisers aren't completed yet so please check them out later.  But you can check out information on touring the Mill or if you live in Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio click on "stores in your area" to find a place in your area that carry The Mill products now!
