Hi!
I'm doing a day-long educational seminar for caregivers in Toledo, Ohio on Saturday, June 2nd. It's sponsored by the Toledo Area Support Group of the Central Ohio Chapter of the HDSA. If you're interested, please join us.
I've spent the last eight years trying to learn and then describe what's it might feel like to have HD. This serves as the basis for trying to become better caregivers. It's been well received when I've most recently done it in Scotland and segments of it elsewhere over the last few years. I've designed the program for both family and nursing home caregivers. I promise you a day of practical advice creatively presented with genuine concern for the difficulties that you encounter, compassion for both you and your loved one and some humor. The topics for the day include:
"Huntington's Disguise:"

"Huntington's Disguise:"
How the physical and cognitive features of HD may mask what the person's really thinking or feeling.
"What It Might Feel Like to Have Huntington's Disease"
"What It Might Feel Like to Have Huntington's Disease"
Only those with HD know what it feels like to think with HD. But based on some of their reports and what we know about the neuropsychology of HD, we can make an educated guess that can shape our understanding and change how we approach things.
"What Caregivers Need to Know about the Movement Disorder" and
"What Caregivers Need to Know about the Movement Disorder" and
"What Caregivers Need to Know about the Cognitive Disorder"
Some of the features that are less often discussed but important for caregivers to know about.
"Why Daily Routine is Essential and Maybe Improving Yours"
"Why Daily Routine is Essential and Maybe Improving Yours"
You know how important routine and "No Surprises!" can be. This is a look at why this is and how to go a bit further in giving the person with HD a greater degree of predictability.
"How to Give a Shower.or a Bath.or to Help Someone Eat"
"How to Give a Shower.or a Bath.or to Help Someone Eat"
Here are some new ways to approach basic care.
"Some Ways to Keep People Engaged in the More Advanced Stages"
"Some Ways to Keep People Engaged in the More Advanced Stages"
We'll talk about how to make it easier to keep those quiet intimate moments with your loved one when they have the most difficulty communicating with you and you feel them becoming more distant.

A fully staffed respite room will be provided for those affected by HD who come with a loved one so they can relax and enjoy the day with movies and activities during the seminar sessions. We'll have lunch together with them.
