Attached is the HDSA 2007 - 4th Annual National Youth Alliance [NYA] Convention Scholarship Application. This scholarship is open to any current member of the NYA, including its alumni, who requires financial assistance in order for them to be able to attend the HDSA National Convention in Oklahoma City, OK June 15-17, 2007. Please distribute copies of this application to any HD family who has a young person, between the ages of 9 and 29, who may require financial support in order for them to attend the 2007 national convention. As anyone who has attended an HDSA national convention in past years can attest the presence, enthusiasm and exuberance of our young people are strongly visible and felt by everyone! Besides the HDSA educational tracks designed for young people the opportunity for them to meet old friends, mentor new members and work collectively on the NYA fund raising events at the convention provides them with encouragement and hope that helps them throughout the year.
Funds for this scholarship primarily come from the annual NYA Talent Show, Silent Auction and other entrepreneur fund-raising idea's the NYA members come up with during the national convention. A large portion of the funds they raise each year go towards Huntington's Disease Research with about 20-30% getting designated to their annual convention scholarship fund. In past years anomoynous benefactors have contributed to, or matched, the funds the NYA raise.
A notice will come out shortly on how you can help support the annual HDSA NYA Silent Auction on Saturday night, June 16th, by collecting items and bringing them to Oklahoma City with you, or sending donated items to a location we will be providing you. Our young people have also amazed and entertained all convention attendees for the past 3 years with their music, dancing, artwork, poetry and other talents! If you know of a young person who will be attending the national convention who would like to participate in the annual HDSA NYA Talent show on Friday night, June 15th, please have them contact NYA member Shana Martin shana@....
This year there is a balance of $5,851.32 in the HDSA NYA Convention Scholarship Fund. A full scholarship, which includes all expenses to the national convention including per diem for food and miscellaneous expenses, can run between $1,000.00 to $2,000.00, depending on the location of the applicant. For parents who would like more information on the HDSA National Youth Alliance there will be a opportunity for them to attend a joint session with NYA members on Friday, June 15th after the NYA luncheon to learn about their mission, goals and the importance of peer-support groups for young people living with Huntington's Disease. Look for it on the Agenda for the national convention.
