Re: [Grief_Group] Greetings Group

Hi Mandi,
Thanks for writing.

Mandi, if you have the time and it would serve as a blessing to you, would you mind sharing a few things about your mom that made you smile when you two were together? Or maybe an incident or two where you two had a real fun or funny time?

My mom and I used to like the same music. She has Alzheimer's now and while she doesn't know me (she recognizes me a bit), I take her for drives and I play the oldies station. She starts whistling along to the older songs she somehow remembers, and now she even starts to sing along with songs that have looped words. She NEVER sang when she was "healthy." She has a good voice.

Once, my mom and I were back in Illinois for a family reunion. We got lost in the cornfields. I asked this guy for directions and he said, "go up there to the grain silo and take a right." I got back in the car and said, "Mom, he said go to the grain silo and take a right. Isn't that kind of like me (a city person) telling someone from the country, "go to the gas station and take a right."

My mom and I started laughing so hard. We couldn't stop laughing for a half of an hour.

I'm sorry for those that don't feel memory loss is to be equated with the death of a parent. It isn't, I understand that, but the loss has some similarity. My mom and I now have no past. We only have my memories when we get together.

In I Thessalonians 4:18, it is written that we're to comfort one another with the truth that we shall all be reunited together someday. Let us all hang on to that at this time.

God's peace and love to you Mandi during this difficult time.

John

Thanks John,

Your email came at a good time because on July29th it will mark one year since my mother passed away. I'm so deep in thought over that fact than I can barely concentrate on anything else. I keep thinking "this time last year, Mom only had 5 days to live, etc."

I hope everyone is doing well, and staying cool :-)

God Bless,
Mandi
