Greetings, Green Canaries!

Another month has passed, so here's our usual email covering the basics.

First of all, to our new members, welcome!!! You should have received a welcome
message, including the list rules, but just in case you missed it (or forgot it
due to chemical-exposure-induced forgetfulness), this is a reminder that in
order to avoid problems with people joining the list only in order to post
advertisements (SPAMMERS, in other words), new members' first posts are
moderated (delayed in getting to the list, until they can be checked by a
moderator), in order to make sure that they are real posts, not just ads. Once
you post something that shows that you're "real", we take you off of "moderated"
status, and just expect you behave responsibly, like the rest of the list
members. <smile>

We don't mean to seem unfriendly - in fact, the best way to deal with this rule
is just to post a message introducing yourself to the list, so that we can all
"meet and greet". <smile>

The rules are available in our Files section, which you can find online at:
     http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GreenCanary/files

But, in case anyone forgot, here are the basics:

1) Treat each other with basic social decency and respect
     1a) NO FLAMING

2) Remember that many of your fellow list members have memory problems and
other health limitations, so try to accommodate them when posting here.
     2a)  When you change the topic, change the Subject line in your message;
this helps people who aren't up to reading all the messages on the list, and is
important to any subscriber on a limited income who may be paying for the
traffic they pull in.
2b) Please quote what you're replying to from previous messages; some of
us are ill and have memory problems.
2c) Please delete any extra, irrelevant/unnecessary material from any
message you're replying to - especially the ads our mailing list provider
includes at the bottom of the message, but also including any part of the
message that has nothing to do with your reply. You can indicate removed
material easily, by saying "<snip>" wherever you leave out part of the message
you're replying to.
2d) Please be sure to include "Subject", "From", and "Date" lines from the
message you're replying to, so people can figure out which one it is, in case
more than one message in a conversation has the same subject line.

3) Share what you know, if you have something to offer to the conversation.

4) Help when you can - and if you're sick or injured, this includes the
counterpart DON'T try to do more than you can do without hurting yourself.

5) Do what works for you, and remember that we're all different - what works
for someone else may not work - or even be safe - for you, and vice versa.

6) Be kind to the Earth, for She is the Mother of all Life; we have covered
Her with poisons, and as we help Her heal, we heal ourselves.

7) This list is highly ecumenical, with members of widely varying beliefs, and
members of all religious views are welcome; however, we ask that list members
be respectful toward one another. Expressing one's own feelings and views need
not come at the expense of forcing them on one another, and the use of language
of the heart and spirit should be inclusive, not divide us.

8) Respectful and inclusive tolerance and support has always been one of the
core values of this list.

9) This is NOT a commercial list - please do not post advertising here. Our
advertising policy is sent to all new members, or is available in the Files
section of our Yahoo Groups community pages.

Please check out our database and files sections, at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GreenCanary - in particular, please feel free to
add to them!

We're trying to build up some good databases of non-toxic product,
Environmental-Illness-friendly doctors, and more - if you think it might be
suitable, but aren't sure, just check with me (the list-owner).

You are also encouraged to upload files to the files section if they are
on-topic to this list, and may be of use to others on or off the list. This
includes:

~ articles on:
     ~ Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS),
     ~ environmental toxins,
     ~ xenoestrogens,
~ Environmental Illness (EI) of any kind, (including those illnesses that
are not environmental in origin, but make sufferers sensitive to chemical
exposures) and
~ signs of environmental illness in other species,

~ as well as information on alternative medicine,
     ~ chemical-free living,
~ non-toxic treatment methods for these illnesses and any other illness or
problem that may be encountered by a person with MCS or EI,
~ and other aspects of "Green Living" or related subjects, such as:
         ~ organic food and gardening,
         ~ herbalism,
         ~ nontoxic building and
         ~ construction methods.

DO NOT upload any copyrighted material that is not yours to share, unless it
explicitly states in its content that it is available for public distribution by
any non-profit means or media.

Please feel free to announce the existence of this list to others who might be
interested, as long as it is done in a friendly, appropriate, and tactful way -
and of course, I would expect no less of you, or any other member of this list.
We are here to help each other, and to pool our knowledge to the benefit of all.

For this reason, the list archives are publicly available; please observe all
standard precautions regarding unsecured transmission of any personal
information, and share only that information which you are comfortable with
making publicly available. While I would hope that all list members are equally
dedicated to the ideal of helping each other with knowledge and support in the
effort we make to detoxify ourselves and our environment, not here to hurt each
other or anyone else, the internet too has its hazards, and we must all exercise
reasonable judgement about the information we choose to share about ourselves
and our personal lives.

And most of all - ENJOY THE LIST! It's here, it's for you, use it! <smile>

Hi Rachel,

No advice, but you are not alone. My neighbors burn wood like crazy. We think
they are actually heating their house with their fireplaces. Our houses are
only 20 feet apart so its pretty terrible. The guy 2 doors down from us smells
like he burns all kinds of nasty stuff. "They" should not allow fireplaces in
homes that are built so close together!

Last spring we put ceramic tile in the bedroom to make the air in there
helathier for me, but I cannot sleep in there because the smoke gets in even
though everything is closed up tight.

I live with my house closed up year round. IF its not the wood smoke, its the
laundry ventage.

BTW, happy new year everyone!

Sandy

ira,

thanks for your help! my boyfriend is also suggesting a zinsser
product for sealing in the smell of the wood floor, but not the
normal zinsser shellac (which still smells in the testing jar 1 month
after we put the sample in the jar), but rather he is suggesting a
de-waxed barrier shellac product called "Zinsser's SealCoat Universal
Sanding Sealer" (not be be confused with any AFM product, even tho it
has an AFM sounding name!) My boyfriend says it is a product that is
de-waxed shellac, and supposed to be used as a barrier coat, and that
it seals in smells in wood. AND it dries instantly and outgasses very
very fast. we'll see if that is true!

here is a link to the product. i'll go to home depot and buy some to
test it today. (the jar test)
http://www.zinsser.com/pdf/TDB/sealcoattdb.pdf

separately, ira, can you clarify something regarding what you wrote
below. you wrote: "i'm not sure i'd recommend that" -- what are you
referring to? and why would you not recommend it? do you mean you
don't like the AFM hardseal product, period, or you don't think
putting AFM hardseal over zinsser/shellac is a good idea? and if so,
why?

i soooo wish i could call the AFM company and ask if i can cover AFM
HardSeal with another product, but Jay, the knowledgeable guy there,
is on vacation til Jan 10th! and i doubt *anyone* will answer the
phone today, new years day.

warmly,
rivka

what will seal in the odor for sure is shellac zinnser

though it has alot of voc and it will irritate yoru breathing

i once called afm....and they recommend put on the shellac

and then cover that with hardseal....i'm not sure i'd recommend that

but shellac is what they use when there is a fire and they need to
seal in the smoke odors

what about afm acryliz

check out greendepot also..maybe they have some ideas

good luck,
ira

i, too, had trouble with taking glutathione. i tried intramuscular
shots and also nebulizing it (inhaling it) and i got much sicker both
time. but i know others who do well on it...

there is also the methylation protocol that aims to increase the
body's glutathione levels by reducing or ending a block in the
methylation cycle. more info on this listserv/website:

I also used aluminum tape around the windows to seal them better from the
inside...not pretty but it helped with the smoke issue.

Woodsmoke permeates through all the cracks in the windows, front doors etc.

Can go in to a hardware store and get plastic that you would put over your
window with double sided tape. This plastic is usually used to keep the draft
out. I've used it to keep the smoke out.

Try putting the plastic around the windows on the inside of your house. That
should help..if need to, can try the plastic on hte ousitde of the windows also.

Woodsmoke is very invasive especially if you have trouble breathing...i had a
neighbor burning pine and it would take over my whole house.... Can also have
the austin blow air directly onto you so get better quality air...I also used to
use x-o spray....it would get rid of smoke odor for 10-15 min...though you may
be sensitive to x-o spray as well....but hte plastic should help. Good luck,
Ira

Rachel,

Someone said about putting plastic on the windows.  In addition to that,
depending on your vents, this may help, too.  A number of years ago
fireplace/woodburning smoke got into my other mobile home and made me very
ill.  I put 2-ply (just folded it) plastic on the vents (on the ceiling) for
the swamp cooler.  Took care of it well, & I did not have air cleaners then.

I can't do the plastic on the vents in this mobile home because the swamp cooler
(which I do not use), heat and AC all come out the same vents (in the
ceiling).  My AC/furnace service person said that outside air is drawn in to
some degree when I run the heat or AC, I think he said it comes through the
swamp cooler even though I don't use it.

Last winter I called my eco store when I bought my 3 Austin Healthmates as they
were not very effective against the woodburning 'crap'.  He delivered an IQ air
purifier and that works real well, very little smoke odor and I don't get ill as
long as I rurn it in the living room by day and in my bedroom at night.  The IQ
is pricey--

I've had amazing results with Glutathione in an IV, but I did not
attempt an IV until after I had been nebulizing Glutathione for a few
months. As long as you have a good practitioner who knows what she/he
is doing and has done all relevant tests, go for it- just take it
slow. I was nebulizing 100 ml once a day for a long time before I did
my first, modest IV at 500 ml. My last IV was 2000ML, and it brought
me up to functioning from not functioning well AT ALL. Me, my phase
one is more compromised than my phase two, which is why I think
Glutathione agrees with me (I learned that tidbit from the genova
genetic test).
Good luck,

hi rachel,

may i ask you a question related to yr post about de-stinkifying yr
new dryer? (see yr post below, where you wrote that yr detox protocol
included:

"many soaked rags and paper towels using (at different times) vinegar,
biokleen bac out, baking soda and water, and just water put in the
dryer while running (outside in the yard) on high, always finishing
with a few rounds of water soaked rags.")

i'm seeking clarification: were you saying that you soaked some rags
in vinegar, biokleen and baking soda (at diff times) and then put
them thru a dryer cycle? or were you saying that you scrubbed out the
non-running dryer with rags soaked in these things?

Subject: [GreenCanary] I love my new portable dryer- you may find this useful:)

After hanging up clothes from my kitchen rafters for the past few
months and living in a veritable damp clothing forest whenever we
washed our clothes, my hubby and I pooled our resources and bought a
compact, portable dryer by avanti:

http://www.compacta ppliance. com/D110- Avanti-Electric-
Compact-Portable -Dryer/D110, default,pd. html?mtcpromotio n=Nextag%
3EAppliances% 3ELaundry% 3EDryers% 3ED110&src= NEXTAG

It took a little time to off-gas, but now it works just great! I
wanted to recommend it because it is an affordable and relatively
small unit.

Details:
*it weights about 50 LBS, so it is transportable (well, sort of; we
plan on getting some wheels for it, like a plant stand or something)
*it is electric and plugs into a normal outlet

Detox protocol:
*many soaked rags and paper towels using (at different times) vinegar,
biokleen bac out, baking soda and water, and just water put in the
dryer while running (outside in the yard) on high, always finishing
with a few rounds of water soaked rags.
*The first few days, we just aired it out; at night, when we brought
it in, we put a bag of zeolite and a dish of coffee grinds inside. We
also sprayed it down lightly with airzyme.

Pluses of this machine:
*relatively compact
*relatively lift-able (by my husband at least)
*detoxed fairly quickly
*dries clothes pretty fast, holds a decent amount of clothes
*comes with options to buy extended warranties, up to 5 years

Negatives of this unit:
*has no good grips or handles, so hard to move around; you can buy a
wall mounting unit with the machine, which I'd recommend if you are
able to mount it
*the lint trap is weird and unusual, but once you figure it out it's
not such a big deal
*there is a rubber thingy on the door that doesn't touch the clothes
(the clothes smell just fine) but is a little stinky in and of itself
(that rubber smell).

Overall, I'm please with the little guy. For under $250, and for
something that is delivered right to your door for about 30 bucks,
it's pretty darn sweet. My life just became a whole heck of a lot
easier.

I am in no way connected to this company; I'm just totally happy to be
able to do my laundry in a relatively normal fashion, and I wanted to
put this information out there to help others:)

~Rachel

This sounds great Rachel!!

Did you do the genomic test from Genova? I did the test
and my GSM1 was absent. NObody knows how to inteterpret it.

Any tips would be much appreciated.

I heard so much negative stories about Glut IV, and so far,
you are the first person with positive feedback.

How long ago did you have the Glut IV?

What I can't understand, is that apparently, the level
of Glut rises upon having the IV - but then goes down again
to even lower level. It rises for a few hours then goes down again.

Is this correct?

Thanks,

I just started taking Glutathione Booster from Carlson Labs about two weeks ago.
I have noticed more energy, I'm able to thinking more clearly and I feel better.
I have been taking 3000mg or more daily of vitamin C for a few months also and
just swithched to powdered hoping my body will absorb it better.

Sheri,

I used Glutathione for many years, both nebulized and nasal (they are the same
and you just use either nasal or nebulized). I got them from Key Pharmacy in
Kent Washington. That was the pharmacy that original had it from the beginning.
Now I understand it is available from other pharmacies. It is also available in
liposomal glutatione which I got from my doctor since they were the ones who
developed it. But I understand other places carry it. I just don't know where.
You might check with Key Pharmacy for that as well. (800) 926-3458.

I've also done IVs or pushes of Glutathione in the doctor's office.

I've had good experiences with all forms, except in the very beginning when I
was using too much nebulized causing me to have a sore and raspy respiratory
system, but once I backed off it was fine.

has anyone ever had experience, good or bad, with shellac (a wood
finishing product)? did it stink for a long time after you put it on
yr wood?

here's what is happening: when the wood sample i coated tonight with
shellac is *not* in my glass testing jar, it is totally, and i mean
totally, stink free (10 hrs after application). yay. right? however,
when a sample of the same is in a sealed glass jar for an hour and
then i take a big whiff of the jar air, it clearly still stinks a lot.

but in truth, in general, i haven't had much success with the jar
test and thus don't trust it. for example, i used the jar test with
AFM HardSeal (wood finishing and sealer product) last month and very
shortly after application of the product, i was fine with the jarred
sample. but then when we used the product in an actual room, on all
the windows/doors, it smelled strongly for a full month. (it was a
larger space than a glass jar, obviously, but it was also a lot more
product outgassing.)

anyway, has anyone had good or bad experiences with shellac?

(we're considering using this product, which is a de-waxed shellac)

thank you all for all yr help lately!!!!!!!!!!!! very very appreciated.

First of all, thanks all for advice on sealing up the house and how to
deal with nutty toxic neighbors- THANKS SO MUCH!

This one is in response to kooky:

This sounds great Rachel!!

Did you do the genomic test from Genova? I did the test
and my GSM1 was absent. NObody knows how to inteterpret it.

-Yes I did that very test. If you want a recommendation for an ND to
interpret your test, give Dr. Thauna Abrin a call (you can google her
and find her info; she is in the bay area, CA, in walnut creek and
albany). She will do work over the phone- tell her Rachel Rosen sent
ya:) She was great at helping me figure out this test.

Any tips would be much appreciated.

I heard so much negative stories about Glut IV, and so far,
you are the first person with positive feedback.

-well, that's weird; I heard that the IV's really help people

How long ago did you have the Glut IV?

-I did the IV about 3 weeks ago, when I was reacting to anything and
everything. My functioning was extremely extremely low; now, I'm able
to function better, although without safe housing it's hard to say how
much better I'm doing. Let's just say before I felt like walking
death, now I feel just sick.

What I can't understand, is that apparently, the level
of Glut rises upon having the IV - but then goes down again
to even lower level. It rises for a few hours then goes down again.
Is this correct?
Thanks,
Kooky

-sorry, don't know about that one. My doctor told me that the IV
should last in the system for about 2 weeks. That's all I know.

Good luck!
Rachel

Hi There

Well i am back from my fridge saga, and thought i would share with you what i
learnt. Not proffesional advise, just my experience.

I went to look at second hand fridges, and there were not many and they did
smell of mould or smoke. I thought a fridge about a year old would be ok, as
long as it was still under warranty.

Now i am not sure about how much i can help you with fridges, because I am in
Australia. There are loads of different brands out there and they all stink new.
I did find one on the floor that didnt smell, out of about 200 fridges that i
stuck my nose into briefly. One thing I learnt was many fridges are made in the
same factory, same compressor that runs the fridge, whats different is the
inside & outside look.

My choice of fridge was a stainless steel one , with a stainless steel handle.
(Avoiding plastic as much as possible of course) Glass shelves compared to
plastic and metal trims. There were different types of plastic. Some hard and
some softer flimsy. The harder the plastic the less it smelt. Of course the
harder the plastic, the more expensive the fridge was. The green tinged plastic
smelt more than the clear plastic. I chose a fridge with hard plastic shelves on
the door inside with metal holders instead of plastic....

Decided against fridges with deodorisers....smiles....and ones with nano
technology, fine pieces of silver floating around your food. didnt sound great
to me. Didnt want ice makers or the likes, they have plastic lines etc....

So the fridge i chose was un upside one (freezer on the bottom) with all the
above specs. I also liked that they used metal runners for the shelves, not as
much energy to pull out. These were made by fisher & paykel. I may find these
requirements in another fridge, but at least i know what i am looking for.

*Stainless Steel
*Metal Runners
*Metal Handle
*Glass Shelves
*Floor stock - offgassed a little
*Hard Plastic
*No deodorisers
*No Nano Technology.

Hope this list helps someone in the future.

Sad thing is, these fridges for the 440L family size are $1800 - $2300 here in
AU. So I wont be buying a new fridge , i will have to continue to kick mine
shut and mop up the leaking water every day until I can find one thats a few
months old...second hand under warranty.

All the other fridges i looked at were way too stinky, and alot are changing to
nano technology, which scares me. The guy told me that Nano Technology is being
incorporated into most appliances these days. Washing machines already have them
where the silver particles apparantly stick to your clothes. Fridges have it as
a bacterial component.

Anyone heard about the pro's & cons of nano?

Dianne

Now...for the sad realirt

I was reading your post about how much you nebulized.  It said 100 ml per day.
I nebulize 3 ml 2 or 3 times per day.  It is so expensive!  I get my products
form Key Pharmacy.  I was just wondering how you could afford to nebulize that
much on a regular basis?  Was that amount correct in your post?  Thanks!

I am hoping someone can help me.  I have an antique daybed that has somehow
gotten termites in it.   It must have happened when I took the bed to an old
antique shop to have some repairs done on the wood frame where a friend's dog
chewed on it.  The termite companies said they would fumigate for free if I
bring the bed to them and that the gas is odorless.  What I want to know is do I
dare trust that it really is odorless to me?  I would have to bring it back home
in my SUV after the fumigation and I could set it out on my screened porch for a
week or so as long as it doesn't rain.  I'm just really concerned about even
putting it in my car afterwards.  Has anyone had any experience with this sort
of thing?

Odorless does not mean CHEMICAL-FREE.

I would try boric acid or something less toxic.

I have not had that problem but if I did I would try baking soda first.  Do you
have pets or small children in the house?  You don't want them to get to the
baking soda as a precaution.  Best scenario-- if you have a garage or spare
room with no other furniture, you can smear baking soda in any holes/grooves
on the furniture and on the floor under it the furniture,  and way beyond it
on the floor.  That way, the termites have to go through it to get away and
should die.

I have a beautiful, solid wood headboard that I had to keep in my storage locker
(on site at the apt complex where I used to live).  I just put a sheet of
plastic over the headboard and sprinkled baking soda over the entire floor in
case roaches, spiders, termites came around.  The headboard was in that locker
for 5 years-- I have been using it for 4 years-- no bugs ever on/in the
headboard or my other things in the locker.

There had been termites in my mobile home before I bought it.  One organic
exterminator recommended Boracare (recommended by drs with chemcially sensitive
patients; 2nd organic exterminator suggested diluting salt with water and
spraying/saturating the soil under my MH, but I decline that because I was
afraid of fumes.  Interestingly, he told me the rock salt that I use for weeds
(I have stones/desert landscaping) can kill termites or at least drive them to
move their nest.

Good luck, and let us know what works for you as others may run into the same
termite problem when buying used furniture................Corky

what benefits did you perceive from using the nasal?

-oh honey I have become a sensitive one: fragrances, particle board,
pesticides, you know the usual suspects

Hope that helps Fita!

i have collected info on glutathione on and off (so it is incomplete
info) for the past few years, from the various listservs and forum
i'm on. i'm happy to send those files to you or anyone.

Key Pharmacy has a whole Glutathione nebulizing protocol...

Others (like Rich Van K) suggest nebulizing both B12 and glutathione
together. I have a short paper Rich wrote on why he suggests that.

again, what i have is a mishmash collection of info, but there is
some good stuff in there. if anyone wants it, email me offlist. it is
a few files/documents.
