I have had many people in the past, present and I am sure that I will
hear again in the future that they are stressed about eating more (to
gain mass), eating less (to lose weight), finding time to workout,
etc. I am hoping that most people find that fitness is not only a way
of life, but also a state of mind. If you find yourself not being
accountable for your actions, lying to someone or yourself when asked
about your routine of working out or eating, then you are not living a
healthy lifesyle. Deep down you are stressed out and uncomfortable
with the way that you live and knowing that you are not being a
healthy individual, you lie to others to avoid receiving guidance
toward the right direction. It is okay to have an off day, where you
miss a meal, miss a workout, have a junk snack, etc. It is up to you
to decide on your own that this is a "one time" deal. I won't let
myself do this again. However, if you find yourself going days, weeks
or even months of saying to yourself, "I will stop doing this
tomorrow," "Next week I will get started," etc, you are decreasing
your chances of changing how you live, because you are developing a
BAD HABIT.

A couple of years ago a friend of asked me "Why are you so angry?"
The question stopped me in mid rage…it took me until recently to
realize that the question, like the anger, was a gift. (It took my
friend a tremendous amount of courage to ask why I was so angry.
But then again she's been my friend almost 25 years)

Zach de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine sings in "Freedom"
that `your anger is a gift'. Definitely not a gift that one wants
to keep, like an ugly tie or a Chia Pet. For me, anger was the gift
giving me reason to consider my choices and concerns.

Seven years ago a series of events in my personal life caused me to
begin a downward spiral into a hole of depression. Confused, I
began to replace exercising with exorcising. No longer were my
workouts filled with joy and happiness – instead they become a way
to suppress the feelings that made me angry. As my personal
satisfaction with my performances began to disappear so did my
appearance in the triathlons. I signed up for races, intending to
train and race again, only to donate money to race directors for
races I failed to start.

The cycle of anger and depression is difficult to break. Oddly the
body becomes addicted to these destructive emotions so often when
presented with a difficult situation I acted out in anger. Then in
an effort to thwart the feelings of anger I would crawl back into
that hole of depression, pulling the covers over my head and
escaping the emotions of anger. Missing life.

Missing things like riding my Kestrel, watching Brodie's and
Lennox's ears blow back while going for a walk on a blustery day,
crossing the finish line of a triathlon and feeling good about my
performance. Enjoying life.

This past winter I began to effect a change. Instead of worrying
about those things which really did not matter and being in love
with my sadness and anger, I instead began to fall in love with
enjoying life. Appreciating the goodness in my life allowed me to
live in the present moment, looking at my existence as Choygam
Trungpa descibes in his book Great Eastern Sun: The Wisdom of
Shambhala…'what comes next is the appreciation of that first good
thought, which is called the stroke. Coming out of the dot is the
brushwork, just like when you touch an actual brush and ink to the
paper. First you touch the ground, the canvas or the paper, then
you create a stroke. The stroke of goodness is connected with the
second thought. From the first thought, the dot, you extend the
second thought, which arises from gentleness. You are not trying to
fight with your world or to destroy anything, nor are your trying to
gain anything personally. There is just the first flash, and there
is a sense of continuing that'.

The Buddha teaches us "Holding onto anger is like grasping a hot
coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one
who gets burned". I have taken that lump of coal and tossed it in
the hole representing my depression. I know there are times ahead
where I may be tempted to retrieve it. Instead of I shall take a
breath and listen to my inner wisdom. That is my fitness resolution
for 2006.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Holiday Season and are looking to get
back at it or just get started in the New Year of 2006! I have had
many questions and concerns about Holiday weight from people who I
have worked with for a short time or have not worked with at all.
Please, if you are looking to lose weight, do not jump straight to
fat burners or other "weight-loss" supplements. Look to clean up
your eating habits with increasing Fruits, Vegetables, Lean Meat and
cutting out sugar (cake, pie, cookies, etc.). Increasing your water
intake and cutting out calorie drinks and soda, you will notice that
you will lose your bloat in 2-4 weeks and lose 3-10 pounds depending
on your starting weight.

A couple other things, Halodrol-50 will be in on January 11, 2006.
We received a call from Gaspari on January 4, 2006 and they will be
shipping shortly. We also have samples available for the Bio-Core
protein.

Good Luck on your fitness goals and if there are any questions or
anything else I can help you with. Please let me know at

Dale Wallace works out over at the Pumphouse Gym in southwest Cedar
Rapids. It's the little gym that Dohn Glanzer set up a few years
ago. There is another guy named Ken, a big guy, that used to be over
at New Life on Blairsferry Road.

Among things he has shared with others regarding his career is that he
was a Navy SEAL, this was researched out, there is no record of him
being a Navy SEAL. He has done a bodybuilding show, came in at an
estimated 15% bodyfat. He has also told people he trains people,
earning over 20K per month.

The general consensus is he is 20 pounds of baloney in a 5 pound bag.

1.Training is a way of life not a certificate for a month, two or
three of training. Training for the average client that is/will be a
steady client is a budgeted item be it for a son, daughter or the
person themselves that are being trained. In the field and within
the industry, training is not paid for by the session or month, but
more realistically is paid as a lump sum for results that the
individual knows they will receive.
I am a strength coach. I'm not one of those high strung,"lifestyle
coaches", who have made their reputations through physique
transformations- and then have to spend to much time coaxing their
clients into showing up for workouts. I make motivated athletes and
common people faster, stronger, and more powerful. Sometimes I make
them bigger, sometimes smaller. Strength training is what I do, and
I am very good at it.
We do not count calories as we do not use supplements. My
professional experience is that supplements can play an important
role in training, but they are not a substitute for a proper diet,
hard training and adherence to good health habits. Because one
important goal of strength training should be to improve health, a
client should learn to not use supplements first. What good is three
protein shakes a day if they are not eating healthy? There is no
substitute for food and I work first by taking all supplements away
from my clients, then adding only what I know they need. This is not
based on what a supplement company advertises, but what over thirty
years in the field has taught me. Trust me when I say anyone can be
a Gym like Rex has built, but a few of us are gifted to not have to
sell supplements to make a living strength training. Instead we take
them away and teach people how to spend wisely at the correct time
to get the results we want for their health.
"I squat to be able to get off the toilet when I am 80, not to
impress someone."
Gift certificates are a gimmick, buy me new tennis shoes as most
people's are worn out and they don't want to spend the money on new
ones. The shoes you wear are more important for your health than any
supplement you could ever buy.

Dale

2.I can't speak for everyone on the list, but I know that in my
family we're not big into giving and receiving gifts anymore at
Christmas. If we do give or receive a gift, it's generally pretty
small in terms of the dollar value. However, a gift certificate to
GTPF would be a nice idea!

You ought to think about running a "new year's resolution" weight
loss program—for every 5lbs a person loses, you knock $2 off your
hourly training fee. You could call it the "The more you lose, the
more I lose" deal! You'd have to be careful though, you might end
up working for nothing if you had customers that needed to lose
200lbs or some such amount.

Cheers!

1.i think many people are embarassed to ask for health and fitness
related things,
because they will be seen as "more fat" by whoever they ask, than
they already
think they are. i think there is no better gift than health. i cant
imagine why
your sales arent increasing this time of year, especially since
everyone's new
year's resolution is to lose weight. are you looking for any people
to help
promote and advertise for you? i am going to be doing a lot of
training this
spring in preparation for the National Golden Gloves boxing
tournament. if you
are interesting in partnering with some advertising i am interested
as well. let
me know.

2.I would have to say I would love the idea of getting a gift
certificates and
supplements for christmas. I am not understanding why people are not
responding
to this. What a great christmas gift that would be. I ask for
nothing for
christmas, and tell my family I better not get anything but cards.
So, that is
why Brian has not came in. I just plan on getting back with you
after the first
of the year. The money I use for training is just a expense I put
in my budget
for the year(instead of ciggarettes or beer etc.) I hope people see
how
important health is and buy these gift certificates.

3.Hello Brian,

Hope all is going well. My daughter needs more bars, but I likely
will stay off the roads for a couple of days.

Re your question on gift certificates, my family does not do much
gift exchanging. We give gifts to our children, nieces, nephews,
etc. We do give some small things to friends, like a bottle of wine
or a small basket of something. My only thought on your gift
certificates is while I think its a great idea, it might not fit
into the traditional mold of Christmas giving and in some cases be
considered as politically incorrect. Is giving a gift certifcate
like this considered as encroching too far into someone's personal
lifestyle considerations? ie. would I give a certificate for 3 PT
sessions to my wife or some other loved one, probably not. Not that
I don't value what you bring to the table with our sessions or
products...I really do. I'd be concerned about their perception of
the meaning behind the gift...what's this person trying to tell
me..am I fat! Even though my wife and daughter workout and would
probably use these sorts of certificates, I still would not be
comfortable giving them. I know some people are even offended by
gift cards or gift certificates in general, regardless of where
there are purchased. I have heard negative feedback on companies
that give gift certificates for say HyVee, but not for those who
give for say Younkers. Don't know if I've provided any insight, but
have a Merry Christmas.

You can give your responses to these responses.

Recently, I have had a lot of customers, clients and even some of the
people who are receiving this message bring up the topic of "Putting
off training for awhile." Because of the Holiday season, buying
gifts, money, etc. I am wondering from the aspect of people who
receive gifts, give gifts, etc., since I have verbally and through
email informed people of gift certificates available why this has not
become a choice for a gift? I am wondering if people are asking for
other types of gifts? Not receiving gifts from anyone? or what the
case might be. At this point I have had 2 people who have had
friends, family members or co-workers come in a purchase gift
certificates for training. I am trying to figure out from my end if
there is another way I should go about informing people or if this is
just not something people think of asking for as a gift?

I don't mean any question to be offensive and I don't want anyone to
think I am trying to do so. I am just curious from your stand points
of what type of things you might ask for or why you don't or didn't
think of training or supplements as a gift? If you would like to
contact directly admin@....

I've been using creatine since I started lifting "seriously" 2 years
ago. I stopped using it for two months to see if it was effecting my
performance in the gym. The most noticable result was less explosive
power on my big lifts, i.e. squats, rows, and presses. I feel like it
is more of a fuel for bigger lifts (which = more mass) than a mass
builder in itself.

Hopefully everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and will continue
to work towards their goals as the end of the year nears. Many of you
have had distractions come up around the Holiday season and have found
yourselves working out and following your nutrition plans less.
Hopefully we don't reach the end of December and you regret what you
have done in the past two months.
With the Holiday Season coming up, remember that gift
certificates are available at GoldenTrainer Performance Studio and on
www.goldentrainer.com. From the way it sounds, I don't think anyone
will turn down the gift of health. Whether it be training or
supplements, they are available.
In 2006, I am looking at adding new equipment to the studio and
was wondering if any of you have a preference or recommendation as to
what you might use outside the studio, that you would like brought
in. I will do my best with all recommendations and have some ideas of
my own, but would like some un-bias thoughts.
I wish you all a HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON and as always, let me know
if there are any questions, thoughts or suggestions.

King County in Washington State is adopting a healthcare plan that
will reward employees for maintaining a healthy lifestyle by charging
them lower out-of-pocket healthcare costs. In 2007, those who do
frequent check-ups and fill out questionaires will pay more than $1000
less per year than those who do not. This new plan is expected to
save $33 million in healthcare cost between 2007 and 2009 alone!

Hopefully insurance companies in general will adopt policies like this
to help save all of us money. This is also something that I am
working on with the insurance company that I go through right now, but
there seems to be a lot of resistance because of the thought of
discrimination.

Happy Thanksgiving time to everyone,

During this time of year, many people start asking about what is
acceptable and what is not so they don't fell like they are missing
out on what everyone else is eating. As always, MODERATION is the
key. Make sure on Thanksgiving Day you don't skip breakfast. Eat
your regular breakfast and eat every 2-4 hours like you normally
would with the thought of moderation when it comes time to eat the
BIG meal. You can even have your pie after your meal, just make
sure that you stick to ONE PIECE and that you eat it 2-4 hours after
you had your MODERATE meal. When following these rules, I have
found that most of you will still fall within your calorie intake or
go slightly over. For those who skip meals and gorge, have a
tendency to eat 800+ more calories than your meal plan allows.

Exercising for the Holidays:

You have to decide what your priorities are as an individual. Many
people give excuses that they don't have time, equipment or had to
travel. Even if you are unable to do your training or workouts, it
is pretty simple to take 30 minutes before bed and alternate between
push-ups and sit-ups at worse. Or if you/your relatives have an
empty milk or water jug laying around, fill it with water and do any
exercise you would do with your regular dumbbell workouts.

GOOD LUCK DURING THIS TIME OF YEAR AND IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER
QUESTIONS PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

There are many people (including myself) that use Creatine. From my
personal experience, I have found that creatine has given me a
tighter, longer pump. It also has seemed to help hold more water in
my joints and help take compression off my shoulders and lower back.
As for building muscle quicker, the 2 major things that will help are
increased protein/calories, increased intensity during workouts and
increased testosterone levels.

Another topic for each person to think about, respond to, etc. I had
a female client of mine explain experiences she has had over the last

been rude, mean and insulting to her at work suddenly become friendly
and harassing at work. She also had an instance where she was at the
mall the other day and was wearing a casual shirt and pair of jeans
and had a guy wink at her as she walked by, then she came back through
the store and he was sitting with his wife. She has lost 40lbs and
over 20% Bodyfat and she is not sure how to respond to this. She has
never had to deal with this before because she has always been at a
heavier weight and isn't sure if it should be taken as an insult,
compliment, or harassment. How would you feel/respond? (Male and

For what it's worth . . .

Body Image. First let us really start blaming the fashion people, soap
operas, and advertisers. They have a very sick sense of what the
"IDEAL" body image is. Why do they even bother when 95% of the people
don't even come close to looking like their models do. But we have all
been sucked into that game and I am sure most everyone either wants to
look like them or already think they do.

Let me begin by going back to Max Wertheimer and the Gestalt Theory.
"The basic principle that the whole is greater than the sum of its
parts. In other words, the whole (a picture, a car) carried a
different and altogether greater meaning than its individual
components (paint, canvas, brush; or tire, paint, metal,
respectively). In viewing the "whole," a cognitive process takes place
– the mind makes a leap from comprehending the parts to realizing the
whole."

The problem I have is exactly that. I tend to focus on the part(s)
that look out of proportion to the whole. Having been mentally drawn
for so long on how out of proportion that area(s) are to the rest,
that is all I end up seeing. And falsely too, for I have been so
focused on that for so long, the only image I see is that of disgust,
and it is ghosted there in my mind. So with that in mind I have two
options availbale to me, one of concentration solely on that
particular area(s), and ignore the other, OR work all the other areas
to come into proportion with the unproportional spot.

I have been down the road of total starvation and thinness, to total
"let it go and become huge" too many times. What I am doing now I
believe is getting better control of the whole body. Bryan knows my
goals, and even what I am looking to reach. Sure, I have had many of
conversations with him about how it doesn't seem to be working, but
then every once in a while now, I see the results of it working. SO
now the cemented images in my mind are being broken down and I am
starting to see the reality. So now my focus is looking more at the
whole instead of focusing solely on the parts of disgust. I am seeing
something new, soemthing different, something better I have not seen
before.

Now, don't get me wrong, I am not totally there yet. These are just
new glimpses. But as every day and week go by, I do see something
better. I am feeling better. The best thing is to realize you are
doing something about it. As we have to get use to our exercises and
diets, so do our bodies. The length of time it takes to reproportion
is up to your mind, body and soul. There is no set time and each
individual is different.

A point was brought up to me this morning about body image. This
person feels that they are a bigger person (weighing about 150lbs).
Her husband responded to her with "you have a body image problem." He
feels that she looks like she has a smaller frame and she looks
great. My thought is that each person has a "Body Image Problem." If
this were not the case, then our national obesity levels would be much
higher than they are. Everyone has their "ideal" as to how they think
they should look, feel, weigh, etc. The only time I feel that becomes
an actual problem is when your weight begins to rule ones life. If
you become obsessed with weighing yourself (more than 2 times per
day), measuring yourself or pulling at yourself in the mirror, then we
have a problem. But this is also not as big of an issue (in my
opinion) if you have just lost 20+ pounds and still have more to
lose. Where I see the biggest issue is if I were to have a person
with 14 percent bodyfat or less and have a LOW weight (depending on
the persons build and body type) and they are continuing to eat to
lose weight, complain about the size of certain areas on the body and
possibly doing other things outside the gym, studio, etc. that could
jeopardize their health.
