Thought of the Month:
"How Much Does Drinking Affect Muscle Gain!?" – Anon.
Background:
I have never been much of a drinker and personally would rather have a cheat day
of junk food instead of a night of dinking! While eating junk food may increase
storage of fat, you could argue you are still feeding the muscle you have worked
hard to put on, while alcohol will actually deplete the hard work you have put
in!
Response:
Drinking will play havoc on the muscle gains you are trying to make for the
following reasons:
1. Drinking pushes essential vitamins and minerals out of your body!
a. Vitamins A, C, the B's, calcium, zinc and phosphorus will be pushed out of
your body at an extremely rapid rate. These are not only important in the bodies
daily functioning and health, but they are also important in the growth and
maintenance of muscle mass!
2. Drinking will increase the storage in fat!
a. Loaded with empty calories, drinking messes with each person's Krebs cycle,
which is the process of breaking down food and burning fat. Because there is no
substance to breakdown, the Krebs Cycle has been shown to slow down or even
shutdown, which leads to the storage of fat and calories that are contained in
the alcoholic beverages you are drinking. However, if you are having 1 beer or 1
glass of wine with a meal, this would be considered more acceptable. However, if
you do not take in plenty of water with your meal or if the meal is high in
carbohydrates and/or fats, you will still experience a high amount of storage in
the body leading to fat!
3. Drinking Causes Dehydration!
a. 60-70% of muscle mass is comprised of water. By drinking alcohol, you push
water out of your body and dehydrate yourself. This leads to a decrease in
muscle size/mass!
4. Drinking increases Estrogen and Decreases Testosterone!
a. Testosterone is the main source of muscle building in anyone's body! By
decreasing the amount of testosterone production in a person's body, they will
begin to store calories as fat and begin to eat away at the body muscle mass.
This will also create increase in estrogen, which is devastating to any male.
The lower one's testosterone drops, the older they will look with any of the
following side affects; Man boobs, sagging in the face, grey of the hair,
cellulite around the waistline, cellulite in the gluteus, cellulite in the legs!
5. Drinking Has A Negative Affect on Protein Synthesis!
a. Protein Synthesis is the formation of Amino Acids in becoming complete
proteins, this becomes a problem (as you can see) because there will be a
shortage of protein to feed the muscles!
As a whole, I think anyone can see that drinking, especially in excess will
create major problems for men and women alike with the decrease in muscle
development, muscle recovery and muscle growth and the increase of body fat
storage!
