GENERAL:

If you would like to know what days GoldenTrainer will be closed, go
to: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?
fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=82167100 and look at the
calendar that is available. If there is an event going on that day,
it doesn't necessarily mean we are closed unless it says "(closed)"
next to it. I know it is extremely advance notice, but I will not be
available from November 4-12, 2008!

Thought of the Month:

I know how much you hate golf!

I had a client make this comment to me in the past month, which
completely confused me. I told him that he obviously has
misunderstood my opinion of golf! What I "hate" is when someone
tries to tell me that golf is a good form of exercise. Someone
completely blows off a 1-hour training session, their non-training
day cardio or a workout in general and says, "Well, I am still going
golfing, so I will be getting exercise!"

The two activities are not comparable!

Below is an equation for example, IF YOU WALK THE COURSE:

At 3 mph or 3.5 mph appox. 0.5 kcal/lb/mi
So a 200lb person walking the course (lets say 5 miles [8km] total
distance for 18 holes) and carry their bag (lets assume the bag
weighs 20lbs fully packed) we would use:
0.5 kcal/lb/mi x 200+20lb x 5mi = 550 kcal

That same person would burn:

1380 calories during 1 hour of biking 20+ MPH

992 calories during a 8.5 minute mile pace for 1 hour

690 calories playing 1 hour of competitive beach volleyball

518 calories during a 1 hour training session along with a 250
calorie prolonged burn after the workout!

As you can tell, you are able to burn more calories in all the above
excises than you can in a long afternoon of golfing. During most
exercise or training sessions, people are also consuming water, which
contains NO CALORIES!

The impression I get from many is they counter-act the lack of
calorie they also get from golf by consuming alcohol and junk food.
If one might consume 6 low calorie beers (72 calories) in 18 holes of
golf, then they have put 432 liquid calories in their body and now
they have only burned 118 calories during that time.

You can see how the math really doesn't add up, especially if you are
having food with your alcohol or gorging yourself with a high calorie
meal when you are done! Now if you get your workout in, then golf
after that…. You are many calories ahead, even if you have those
beers on the course!
