Thank you for your reply.  That helps me a lot.  I speak on March 24th.  I was going to email Kathleen today and see what kinds of things I should mention.  I don’t want to discourage anyone from having the surgery but I do want to say the downsides to it.  I’m going to find some old pics to take to show my before.  I wasn’t at my biggest when I had the surgery, or maybe I just have some other “fatter” photos.

I really didn’t have a weight goal.  And I have accomplished being able to do the things I want to do.  I did go off my medication.  All I was really taking was an antidepressant.  But I recently had to go back on because of PMDD or pre-menopause.  I don’t which one it really is, my doctor agrees with both, they must go in hand and hand.  I just know my mind spins.

I just really want to get down a few more pounds and get into the next size down jeans.  I’ll keep working at it.  I do need to go to the support groups, I just seem to have so much going on but I need it.  ~sigh~

So thank you for the boost.  I needed that; especially after my sugar free chocolates.  Eep!

D'Ann,

I'm answering your last email as a post, because I want others to
benefit from our correspondence. I challenge everyone to start
posting more for the benefit of others who are curious or
struggling. I am one who has sat on the sidelines most of the time,
but I realize its time to get into the game.

I've been doing well since my surgery. Counting from my top weight
to my lowest weight achieved, I've lost 146 pounds. In reality, it
fluctuates up and down 5 to 10 pounds. I hang out around 140 pounds
down. St. Mary's has me officially at 120 down, I think, since
surgery.

I have been off all medications for almost a year, and my type 2
diabetes was determined to be resolved at my one year check-up in
January. In fact, all of my blood work was perfect for the first
time in my adult life.

What date are you speaking at the orientation? I would be interested
in coming to hear you speak. I have often thought about volunteering
to speak.

I understand that you have been struggling to lose those those last
few pounds. As far as the amount of weight you have lost goes, don't
get hung up on numbers. Did you go into this to lose 100 pounds, or
was your goal something else? I remember you stating things like; to
get healthy, to not be the fat PTA mom, to be able to play with your
kids, to be able to ride roller coasters, or other such things as
your goals. Where are you now? Healthy? Able to play with your
kids? As I started losing weight, everyone would ask what my weight
loss goal was. It wasn't until I finally made one up for other's
sake that I quit getting the occasional eye roll when I gave the "get
healthy" answer. You have come a long way, and you are an
inspiration for others. Continue to strive to maintain your weight
loss, and keep working to lose more if you would like, but also don't
forget to accept and adore where the good Lord has brought you.

When you go to talk to the orientation class, tell them where you
were and where you are. Tell them the praises, and tell them about
the setbacks. I remember going to that class wanting honest answers,
so I would know what to expect. Don't try to paint a picture of what
you think someone else wants to hear. Just tell your story honestly,
and you'll do great.

Marty My husband should be having lap band this year also.
His will be done at Deaconess...I have aco-worker that should be
having hers within the next two months hers will also be at
Deaconess...same insurance. I should be able to talk to her
tomorrow, we both took a vol layoff for three weeks
As soon as she has hers I can get the scoop at least how it is

Name: Paul B.

Where I live: Newburgh

What kind of surgery: RNY Bypass

When was surgery: January 9, 2008

Where was surgery: St. Mary's Medical Center

Why I decided to have surgery: I wanted to get healthier. I wanted
to see and enjoy my future grandchildren, and enjoy a long active
life with my wife. (I now have a six month old grandson)

What obstacles we had to overcome before or after the surgery, if
any: I had a personal friend die immediatly following this surgery
years ago. Talk of doing this myself was taboo for my family.

What has changed the most in my life since surgery: My energy level.
I find myself skipping stairs at work, and I don't mean for the
elevator.

What I like best about myself after surgery: The change in the way I
look. The ability to buy and wear XL shirts instead of 4XL or 5XL.

Would I do it again: Without question!

What would I like to see this group do for me? I silently drew
information and support from this group prior to my surgery. I have
been fortunate to not have many of the problems that others have
faced following surgery, but I know there will be trials ahead. I
would like to see this group continue to mature into a true support
group that not only I feel more compelled to post on, but also one
that I can direct others to that come to me for help.

Hi Marty.  When I started going to the clinic before my surgery, they handed me a huge 3 ring binder that had all sorts of dividers in it and papers.  It told me every thing that was going to happen before the surgery and step by step what I would eat at every stage after my surgery.  I don’t know how the lap band works so maybe someone else can help us out there.  We started out on liquid and worked to softer foods.  I can look up what was there exactly, but I think maybe you should talk to the dietician where you are going to see if she has a plan like that.

Anyone else here had surgery at Norton or had the Lap Band and can offer some suggestions?

I'm Marty and I live in Tell City.
I haven't had my surgery yet, but I'm planning on the Lap Band. It
was planned for last year, but a bout with bleeding ulcers
sidetracked my plans. All is healed now and I'm in the beginning
stages of planning. The nearest hospital authorized by Medicare is
Norton in Louiville, so that's where I'll be having my surgery.
I have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea,
arthritis and high triglicerides (sp?) and bouts of gout.l I usually
don't over eat, its a lack of remembering to eat. I know that sounds
funny for a woman over 260 lbs. but I don't think about eating most
of the time and when I do eat, its usually not what I should be
eating. I've been trying to eat more often and eat healthy and so far
I'velost 18 lbs in the last year, but I need to rid myself of a lot
of this extra poundage to get off insulin, and cut back on my other
meds.
I know my arthritis wouldn't bother me near as much if my knees
didn't have to carry such a heavy load.
I would appreciate any information on what to eat after surgery.
What's worked for you and what doesn't. Just so I have a general
idea of what to have on hand when I get home.

Thanks in advance.
Marty

Thank you Rebekah and I think that’s a good idea.  We should all meet sometime.  Maybe in the spring when the weather is better, maybe go to a park so we can bring our kids to play.  What does everyone else think?

name: Rebekah

where we live: Evansville

what kind of surgery: RNY Gastric Bypass

when was surgery: June 26th 2007 1 year and 8 months

where was surgery: Deaconess Dr. Burry

why we decided to have surgery: I was on 10 pills a day and four
shots of insulin at only 29 years old. I was becoming insulin
resistant. They told me this could cure my diabetes so I said sign me
up.

what obstacles we had to overcome before or after the surgery, if any:
I did have a long wait to get my insurance approval about 7 months.
I had to convince my family and myself that it was the right thing to
do. After surgery I had some emotional and mental problems. I think
because of the hormones being released in my body from the rapid
weight loss.

what has changed the most in our lives since surgery: I am not
nervous about not fitting into spaces. I can sit down and eat a meal
with out checking my blood sugar and taking a shot. I have less back
pain. I can keep up with my daughter. My husband says he has to worry
about his appearance more if he's going to be the one with the Hot
Chick. LOL

what we like best about ourself after surgery: I have a schedule to
work out. I take care of myself so that I can take care of others. I
like that I can admit my failures and overcome them rather than numb
those feeling with food. I feel good! I am not the fat girl in the
group anymore.

would you do it again: This is a question I ask myself on a regular
basis. I still have thoughts of regret. This surgery has helped me
in the present to make tremendous improvements in my health and
quality of life. I do have some fears about the future but I will
handle that if and when it happens. Sometimes I really miss food. Ok
not food I eat food every two hours....I miss pigging out on food. I
miss being able to eat as much as I want and whatever I want. But
those feelings are emotional and having this surgery has caused me to
deal with those feelings.

any other comments:
I tell those who ask me to recommend this surgery for them that you
should try everything else first. I feel like it should only be
performed on those that have serious health risks because it can cause
other health risks. You have to pray about it. You have to know its
for you.

Is there anything eles you would like to see this group do for you..
i think it would be nice to plan a get together at a restaurant so we
could meat and hang out with other people that have had weight loss
surgery.

Oh my goodness everyone, I saw Brenda today at church and she looks awesome.  Just thinking of her kept my munchies away today.  Brenda, can I have an after picture of you to hang on my mirror (or my fridge)??? Lol

Which reminds me, I know some of you recommended churches and I have been going to different ones, I went to Oakhill Baptist Church today and really enjoyed it.  I think I will go next week, too.  My hubby is off work and he should try it too.

did everyone make it through the winter storm? I hear we've got some
more snow on the way.

I didn't lose any power but did help my neighbor who did. She, along
with her 3 kids stayed 2 nights. So I was making food for everyone but
the little ones didn't eat as much and I ended up with lots of left
overs.

I have to say, I'm having some evening munchies, does anyone have any
ideas of what I can do to keep from grazing my night away?? I love
salty crunchy foods and try to just have a few nuts, sometimes it
works, sometimes it don't.

Help me out here.

I wonder if anyone has had any problems with old habits creeping back
in and how they tamed them. I found myself grazing and know that is a
big no-no. I guess I could just be sure to graze on carrot sticks.

I am going to speak next month at orientation and want to be sure to go
in there talking up beat, know what I mean. Not all down from messing
up.

That sounds really nice.  I don’t really care what side of town it is, as long as I’m being fed and everyone is happy there, I will drive there.

I will put it on my list to visit.

I know you're getting a lot of responses and you have to see what fits your family and where God leads you. I know you live on the eastside but if that didn't matter, Destiny of Faith is on the westside close to TekoppelSchool. It's a small (less than 100 including kids) church. We are a word-of-faith church with both Pastor Mike & Betsy graduating from RhemaBibleCollege (Kenneth Hagin). Pastor Mike is more of a teacher than preacher. Some like that, others don't. Pastor Betsy puts everything on such a simple level that anyone can understand. Taking notes is encouraged! In the kids group, there is a drawing for Chuckie Cheese if the child knows their memory verse each wk. Pastors Mike & Betsy take them and you get a break!
I know this is late this wk. But we start @ 10.
Also, we are the first ones to bring Angel Food Ministries to Evansville so there is the opportunity each month for the whole family to help with that and bless the community!

Okay, help me out here.  My family has been trying different churches.  We all like a different one that we have tried.  We went to Bethel for 10 years but I’ve decided not to go back there for some personal reasons BUT we did love the music there.  Another church we went to has the most awesome tell-it-like-it-is preaching.  And then another had a kids Sunday School and program that my kids really liked.

So now it is Sunday morning and I don’t know where to go.  My husband wants something smaller and personal, where people talk to you and shake your hand.  I want that too, to feel included and accepted.  Can’t get that at big churches where when you are new no one knows it because there are so many people they don’t know there anyway.  Plus with a big church the preaching tends to be so general and “soften” , I assume to not scare any one new away.  The kids classes have to be fun and have at least one person willing to talk directly to my son about fishing or something he likes to get him comfortable.  Change is not always easy for him.  My daughter who is 6, is not real picky but my daughter who is 14 really needs some place that is not cliquey and has a fun class; and if a message can get her to stop doodling on her program that would be good too.  For me I just want to feel wanted there, sing some upbeat songs and hear a straight-on message that makes me think about my life and makes me take a lot of notes.  (I’m a note-taker type).

So this is a big order, I know.  Anyone here have any suggestions?  I didn’t mention a denomination because that does not always describe the church.

I forgot to mention earlier--I told everyone at church I was having gastric bypass surgery. Everyone was VERY supportive. Not one negative comment. 2 yrs. later I'm still being told how good I look and how proud they are of me. I'm not sure I would have done as well as I have without their prayers and support.
I know your clown ministry would be a blessing for kids church and all of us.
You said you wanted a friendly church. Well when you visit, you are treated like a long-lost friend. I'm the opposite. When I visit I want to be ignored--kind of blend into the woodwork until I get used to things. That's not what I got though, when I first visited. We started going there for convenience sake. Now I see this is where God has placed me so I could be taught what I needed to know. Even though I've been a Christian for 35 yrs., I knew the "person" of Christ but I had to learn the "principles" of Christ--that principle that teaches me how to live in this everyday world responding to things in life with "the mind of Christ".
I pray you find the church where God wants you, and you and your family can grow. The time is short--maybe even TODAY!

I don’t know if I have a 12 inch apron, but it’s enough to get in the way and make my clothes look bad.  I have been having trouble lately and have gone back a step to writing down my food.  Some meds I’ve been on have been making me tired and so my exercise motivation is like zip.  My husband has been trying to help but it’s like the blind leading the blind in that area, lol.  And he works nights so for us to time it just right to exercise together is not easy.  And we both need someone else to help us, lol.

So I think in the next few months, after I have gotten back on track I will make that appointment.  It would be worth the money to get everything back in the right places. Even if my insurance didn’t pay for it.

The Dr. at Vanderbilt said the worse it looked (the irritation) the better it would be.  I have Medicare and was told last yr. I had to prove it was a medical necessity for them to pay.  Don't know if things have changed this yr.  Of course it is cosmetic but how could it not be a medical necessity when you have a 12 inch apron hanging in front.

The Dr. at Vanderbilt said the worse it looked (the irritation) the better it would be.  I have Medicare and was told last yr. I had to prove it was a medical necessity for them to pay.  Don't know if things have changed this yr.  Of course it is cosmetic but how could it not be a medical necessity when you have a 12 inch apron hanging in front.

Tell me how that goes.  I wanted to see a plastic surgeon but my insurance will not cover it and it would cost $100 just for the first visit.  That was before Christmas and I just couldn’t do $100 at the time.  I would like to lose a few more pounds and then set up that appointment.

I believe that God only gives three answers to prayer:
1. 'Yes!'
2. 'Not yet.'
3. 'I have something better in mind.'

I thought it was a man but my husband said he saw it on the news and it is a woman.

Then I thought you got my picture after I lost 23 lbs. after surgery!

I went to Nashville today for my 2 yr. check up and he said everything looked great!  I was sent to lab to donate  11 vials of blood.  WHEW!  I feel anemic now!  I'm anxious to see hoe my blood work turns out since I've been taking Max N-Fuze for my mega doses of vitamins and mineral supplement.

He set me up to see a surgeon next month for a tummy tuck.  I am so excited!!!

The question is, What does a 320 pound woman look like?

Now, before you look at her pictures, get a mental image of what you think a woman who weighs 320 looks like....

   Got it?

   Ready?

Not what you were expecting, was it??!!

The tallest and biggest woman in the world lives in Holland .

She is 7'4" and weighs 320

What a relief! Now we ALL know we aren't overweight, just too short!

I sent this to lighten up your day…
