I really need an artist to draw four hotdogs. Yes, I said hotdogs.
Remember how the California raisins look, I want them to look sorta like
that but hotdogs. Two males and two females. This is for a new logo for
our Four Friends Corner Café. If anyone can help me, that would be great,
or if you know of someone who can help, please give them my email address.
I need this pretty soon. Thanks so much, friends

Sounds like a good idea, I am ready kicking myself and  can’t stop snacking in the evening.   I stopped doing the fitday.com while gone on vacation and I can tell the difference.

Tell me when you want to walk, I’ll be ready.  I have things I need to do for day care and other things but can be done after walking.

Anyone else want to walk?

Bah... I hate exercise! I hate the time it takes, I hate having to plan around it, I hate putting on my walking shows when I could just wear my flip-flops. I hate sweating! I hate sore muscles. But I really love the way I feel after the exercising is done. (once the muscles stop screaming at me) and I really like the way I feel knowing that I did something for myself.

I fell off the wagon this winter... I got into sewing, quilting, embroidery and tatting.. all very physically stimulating exercises.... NOT! When I went out a couple weeks ago to start working in the yard I surprised myself and found out just how out of shape I am in again. I just had my ~mumbles under breath~ 49th birthday and I figure I have another 30 years left in this body if I take good care of it... so I started lifting weights, stretching and doing floor exercises again this week. My son, who did a lot of research into weight lifting for strength training and weight-loss, says if I only do squats (for weight lifting) every other day I'll get into shape... OMG!! Squats suck... especially on the 2nd day. Day 1 I did 10 without too much trouble. the next time I did 3... and had to force 2 more out of myself for a total of 5. I'm so not looking forward to tomorrow... which will be the 3rd day of squats. But my goal is to do 25 of them in 1 set along with my other exercises/weight-lifting. (I'm not lifting weights for big muscles, just to get in shape and be able to do things physically). Right now I'm exercising every other day... Once I can walk and sit down/stand up without moaning and groaning on my off days, I'll start a different muscle group so I have a daily routine set up... at least that's the goal right now.

So D'Ann.... I drop Ben off at school at 7:45-7:50. I can be at your house 3 minutes later. We can at least get started and into a routine before the kids are out of school for the summer and you have a whole gang again. You'll have to go easy on me the first week... but if you want we can start up again, at least until summer break.

If anyone else wants to join us (assuming D'Ann does), we walk from D'Ann's house to Wesselman's park, around the park to the stadium and back to D'Ann's. When we are doing well, it takes us just about 55-57 minutes to make a round trip. It really helps to have a buddy to be accountable too and having someone depend on you to show up.

Let me know D'Ann...

The hair loss was the worst for me. My hair is thin anyways and seeing all that
hair caught in the drain freaked me out really bad. I made double sure I was
getting my protein in each day, and it all worked out. It's just one of those
things you have to get through to reach the end.

Finding a support group like the one Julia goes too would be very beneficial...
I had D'Ann to whine and complain too and the psychologist at St. Mary's
Bariatric (Weight-loss center now?) I knew others that had gone through the
procedure so they helped too. Also, for weird questions you might check out the
forums on www.obesityhelp.com You can just scroll through the forums and you're
sure to find the answer to all your questions without typing a word. Someone
there is going through or has gone through what you are going through.

It's great you're doing so well with the weight loss. They say exercising helps
with the depression and I know when I was exercising regularly I felt on top of
the world. A good brisk walk 3 or more times a week might help. I think I
started exercising when I was about 9 months out... I HATE exercising... I mean
REALLY HATE it. (I honestly believe if I loved exercising I would never had
needed the surgery in the first place) So it was the hardest thing for me to get
started with and keep going. D'Ann and I walked every morning M-F last year for
60 minutes after the kids were in school. But once they were out of school for
summer, it was just too hard to keep it up and then I stopped everything. I had
other issues too and just never really got back into the habit... and I can come
up with some really good excuses, but that's all they are, excuses!

Find a support group and start exercising... if you are still feeling depressed
talk to your doctor about medication. Life is too short to be sad and you've
worked so hard to get healthy you need to stay that way.

Good Luck... if you need people to talk too, this group is always watching and
ready to help!

Where did you have it done? There are local support group meetings every mo. that is open to everyone. One month it's at Deaconess on Wed. nights and the next month is at St. Mary's on Mon. nights. They answer a lot of questions and you'll see you aren't different. There is usually someone who has gone through the same thing.
Come join us.

I did have hair loss.  For a few months it just didn’t look good, kinda stringy.  But it came back and with a little curl.   It did bother me and I wondered if it would ever be the same.  I think most people go through that.

As far as depression.  I went the other way and my depression got better.  But now, I am having PMDD so I’m back on meds for it.

Are you talking to your doctor about the depression?  Maybe you can be put on something, at least for a little while.

I’m sorry to hear you are having depression, I know how that is.  I’ve had it for years and it’s been up and down, up and down.

                     MAGNOLIAS...........By Edna Ellison

I spent the week before my daughter's June   wedding

running last-minute trips to the caterer, florist,

tuxedo shop, and the church about forty miles  away.

As happy as I was that Patsy was marrying a good

Christian young man, I felt laden with

responsibilities as I watched my budget dwindle.

So many details, so many bills, and so little time.

My son Jack was away at college, but he  said

he would be there to walk his younger sister   down

the aisle, taking the place of his dad who had   died

a few years before. He teased Patsy, saying he'd

wanted to give her away since she was about three years old!

To save money, I gathered blossoms from several

friends who had large magnolia trees.. Their

luscious, creamy-white blooms and slick green  eaves

would make beautiful arrangements against the rich

  dark wood inside the church.

After the rehearsal dinner the night before the

wedding, we banked the podium area and choir  loft

with magnolias. As we left just before midnight,  I

felt tired but satisfied this would be the best

wedding any bride had ever had! The music, the

ceremony, the reception - and especially the

flowers - would be remembered for years.

The big day arrived - the busiest day of my life   -

and while her bridesmaids helped Patsy to dress,  her

fiancé Tim walked with me to the sanctuary to do a

final check.. When we opened the door and felt a

rush of hot air, I almost fainted; and then I  saw

them - all the beautiful white flowers were black.

Funeral black. An electrical storm during the   night

had knocked out the air conditioning system, and  on

that hot summer day, the flowers had wilted and died.

I panicked, knowing I didn't have time to drive  back

to our hometown, gather more flowers, and return  in

  time for the wedding.

Tim turned to me. 'Edna, can you get more  flowers?

I'll throw away these dead ones and put fresh

  flowers in these arrangements.'

I mumbled, 'Sure,' as he be-bopped down the hall  to

  put on his cuff links.

Alone in the large sanctuary, I looked up at the

dark wooden beams in the arched ceiling. 'Lord,'   I

prayed, 'please help me. I don't know anyone in

this town. Help me find someone willing to give  me

flowers - in a hurry!' I scurried out praying  for

four things: the blessing of white magnolias,

courage to find them in an unfamiliar yard,   safety

from any dog that may bite my leg, and a nice   person

who would not get out a shotgun when I asked to  cut

  his tree to shreds.

As I left the church, I saw magnolia trees in  the

distance. I approached a house...No dog in  sight.

knocked on the door and an older man answered.   So

far so good. No shotgun. When I stated my plea

the man beamed, 'I'd be happy to!'

He climbed a stepladder and cut large boughs and

handed them down to me. Minutes later, as I   lifted

the last armload into my car trunk, I said,   'Sir,

you've made the mother of a bride happy today.'

No, Ma'am,' he said. 'You don't understand  what's

  happening here.'

   'What?' I asked.

'You see, my wife of sixty-seven years died on

Monday. On Tuesday I received friends at the

funeral home, and on Wednesday . . . He paused.   I

saw tears welling up in his eyes. 'On Wednesday  I

buried her.' He looked away. 'On Thursday most  of

my out-of-town relatives went back home, and on

Friday - yesterday - my children left.'

   I nodded.

'This morning,' he continued, 'I was sitting in  my

den crying out loud. I miss her so much. For the

last sixteen years, as her health got worse, she

needed me. But now nobody needs me. This morning  I

cried, 'Who needs an eighty-six-year-old  wore-out

man? Nobody!' I began to cry louder. 'Nobody  needs

me!' About that time, you knocked, and said,

'Sir, I need you.'

I stood with my mouth open.

He asked, 'Are you an angel? The way the light shone

around your head into my dark living room...'

I assured him I was no angel.

He smiled. 'Do you know what I was thinking when  I

  handed you those magnolias?'

 'No.'

'I decided I'm needed. My flowers are needed.   Why,

I might have a flower ministry! I could give  them

to everyone! Some caskets at the funeral home  have

no flowers. People need flowers at times like  that

and I have lots of them. They're all over the

backyard! I can give them to hospitals, churches   -

all sorts of places. You know what I'm going to  do?

I'm going to serve the Lord until the day He calls

  me home!'

I drove back to the church, filled with wonder.   On

Patsy's wedding day, if anyone had asked me to

encourage someone who was hurting, I would have

said, 'Forget it! It's my only daughter's wedding,

for goodness' sake! There is no way I can  minister

  to anyone today.'

But God found a way. Through dead flowers.

'Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the

way it is. The way you cope with it is what  makes

  the difference.'

If you have missed knowing me, you have missed  nothing.

If you have missed some of my emails, you may  have missed a laugh.

But, if you have missed knowing my LORD and  SAVIOR, JESUS

CHRIST, you have missed everything in the world.

May God's blessings be upon you.

THIS IS SO TRUE, BEING NEEDED IS SO UPLIFTING TO  EACH OF US.

This story is too beautiful not to share...

I just wanted to let you know that I will not be doing the St. Marys orientation
next week. I had to call and reschedule when I realized we would be in Texas
that day...lol. my mind is going I think.

How is everyone doing? Maybe someone has a summer time recipe or meal they
would like to share. We will start having picnics with fried chicken and potato
chips....what do we do?? those are my two weaknesses!

Oh, and if anyone here wants to join the parks group, it will be a great summer
of parks...I can tell already.

Real Age has some good tips… about food and lifestyle usually.  Sometimes they stretch it a bit (saying 26% of people who drank black tea didn’t get Parkinson’s Disease was a bit of a stretch I think, what of the other 74%?) but maybe following some of these tips will help us. I’m going to try plan #2. Mostly I just want to get into shape and feel better… I’m not so much worried about the weight.

Thought I would send this on in case anyone is interested. Not saying you’re fat… Just thought I’d send on some good information!

I got the packet yesterday from Dr. Conkright.  It said on one of the papers that some docs performing cosmetic surgery have no formal surgical training.  They should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).  Don't be confused by other official-sounding boards and certifications.  Not every doctor who uses the title "plastic surgeon" has the training to qualify for ABPS certification.

This is a little long.. sorry,

I would check out the doctors before you actually let them cut on you.
I have a real paranoia about this... my Mom had back surgery by Dr.
Grimm in the year 2000. she developed infections and had to have
several surgeries in the following years. It was a nightmare. She had
a wound in her back that was 12 inches long and you could see all the
way down to the hardware they had put in during the original surgery.
Dr. Grimm pretty much wrote her off. After one appointment he never
scheduled a follow up. We were kind of innocent back then and didn't
realize what was happening. When it came to my Dad, I had learned well
and didn't take any crap off any of them... if I wanted them to call
me (because I couldn't wait around for them all day to show up) and
they didn't, I would hunt them down!!
We saw numerous doctors but nobody wanted to touch what Grimm had
screwed up. Finally we found doctors through the wound care clinic at
Deaconess that helped her. They got her fixed up and healing.
The reason I mention this.. Dr. Doepker was the plastic surgeon that
went into the surgery with the ortho doctor and did some miracle
surgery and got the would closed up. After 5 years of an open wound!!
Dr. Doepker was great.. he didn't make any promises but did a
miraculous job on my Mom. He was very considerate of my Mom and her
welfare and really made a good impression on me. My sister in law is
an intensive care nurse at Deaconess and would give us her impression
of the doctors she dealt with... she was very straight forward.. not
all doctors have good beside manners, but are excellent doctors and
then there are those that can make you feel real comfortable but are
not such a good doctor.
I don't know anything about the other doctors listed here, but I think
I have heard good things about Dr. Michael Conkright, but I'm not sure.
In these economic times, I'm sure plastic surgery isn't on alot of
peoples list.. so the doctors are doing all they can do get patients.
Just be careful!!!

$100 initial visit which would be included in the $7500-8000 if they
do it. They are setting appointments about 2 mo. out. I was told
from another Dr. office that they don't have a doc there now. One got
fired about 2 mo. ago and the other quit about 2-3 wks. ago. The one
who's in there now doesn't even have his license yet. Like I said,
this was told to me by another office so don't know how true it is.

Thanks for the ideas and input.  I am really trying to not drink for awhile after eating.  Now that D'Ann mentioned that I do remember hearing that at one time while preparing for the surgery.  You learn so much that I had forgotten that fact.

Hey Judy,

Good to see you on here. D'Ann is right about the drinking too much
too soon. I'm guilty of this some times, and I do pay the price
later. Don't confuse this with drinking plenty of water at other
times though. Drinking plenty of fluids can help delay hunger
pains. Also consider planning your snacks. If you prepare by
keeping healthy snacks, or even some not so healthy snacks available,
and maybe portioned out, you will be able find something to battle
your hunger pains. I keep some almond windmill cookies around.
They're relatively healthy as far as cookies go, they crunch, and
they're just sweet enough to satisfy. Corey would freak hearing me
say this, but I dip into the peanut butter sometimes for a treat.
The fat content is high, but you can't eat peanut butter fast, and
the protein is there. In short, just find ways to find middle
ground. Set out not to snack, but be prepared to be able to make
good choices when you do.

I will try and watch that.  It sure could be the problem because I try to drink a lot of water.  Thanks very much for the info.

Oh you know what, I just remembered something Corey told me awhile back.  She was telling me that if I drank something too soon after eating that it can wash the food down and I would get hungry sooner.  Maybe that is what is happening.   What do you think?

I made plastic surgeon call yesterday.  Here's a little of what I found out.

1.  Medical Cosmetic Center $7500-8000, no payment plan but they do accept Care Credit (which I have).  You can apply for it on line.  $100 initial visit which would be included in the $7500-8000 if they do it.  They are setting appointments about 2 mo. out.  I was told from another Dr. office that they don't have a doc there now.  One got fired about 2 mo. ago and the other quit about 2-3 wks. ago.  The one who's in there now doesn't even have his license yet.  Like I said, this was told to me by another office so don't know how true it is.

2.  Dr. Fred Doepker--Approx. $8500 includes 23 hr. observation stay.  No payment plan but they accept Care Credit.  That price includes everything and all follow-up visits (unlimited).  She said many times in WLS patients there is a diastasis hernia (muscle in the stomach) he has to go back in and fix free of charge.  $95 initial visit but if he does the surgery it's covered in the $8500.

3.  Dr.  Richard Orr--FREE CONSULT about 1 hr. long.  Could not give me a price until after the consult.  They accept Care Credit or get a loan through Capital One.

4.  Dr.  Michael Conkright --FREE CONSULT.  Approx.  $7800  They accept Care Credit or finance through Capitol One or 5/3 bank.  Also, he's having a meeting next Mon. Mar 2 6-8 PM at Gateway.  There will be refreshments, food, prizes and special discounts on some of his procedures.  Won't know which ones till the meeting.  You have to RSVP so they know you are coming.  I told her yesterday I would be there.  It's for anyone looking into plastic surgery.  His website is:  www.beautifultoo.com.  I have not been there yet.

Hope this helps others out.  I was just doing some figuring--with Care Credit for 60 mo.  it's about $238 mo.--basically a car payment.

Thanks for that information.  I would feel weird without my belly button, lol.   I’d have to tattoo one on if I had that done, LOL!  I’m not sure I have enough “apron” to do that.  I still have some fat in mine, I think.  I have wanted to go to a plastic surgery but it cost $100 just to talk to them.  Then I know my insurance won’t pay unless I have had a rash for at least 3 months.   I’m not sure what to do about it.

D'Ann,

I told you I'd let you know what I found out about a tummy tuck.  I went to Vanderbilt today.  My medicare will only pay for the pinn?--it's where they cut off the "apron", pull it down and sew it together.  They remove your belly button and don't replace it.  Cost $25,000-30,000.  Medicare only pays less than $800.

The tummy tuck is not covered at all by medicare.  That includes removing the apron, tightening the muscles and working on the midriff.  You also get your belly button replaced.  Cost $8030 and they work out a payment schedule.  This includes everything except meds.

It is same day surgery so you go home that night.

I'm going to check the cost locally since it's all out of pocket.

Judy, we’ve haven’t talked in a while, no wonder I’m having problems, I haven’t done any whining lately, lol.

Thank you for that.  I think I will try the smaller spoon thing.  I try to take small bites but my husband told me the other day he thought I was eating faster than usual.

I’m proud of him by the way…he’s been using the ftiday.com every day and has lost 17 pounds.    They have a biggest loser thing going on at his work so that is working for him too.

I’m sure we all know all the tricks and what not to do…  if we’ve gone through any kind of weight-loss program (and we have all been there) we’ve heard it all. I’m 2 years out from my surgery and I have screwed up so many times I don’t want to even think about it.

I guess it is good to remind ourselves of the tricks and tips though…. When will power doesn’t work, we have to have something else to fall back on.

*Keep the bad foods out of the house. If you have to have them in the house (like breads) for other family members, then walk away, *Drink water when you think you want a snack.

*Eat a healthy snack instead, like yogurt,  Fresh fruit or vegetables.

*Take a walk or call a friend and whine to them so they can encourage you and tell you how good you are doing and how much more healthy you are now.

*Maybe I’ll post a picture of myself pre-surgery on the fridge door… an 8x10…  so I can’t miss it. or maybe a before/after picture. Just knowing the picture was in the kitchen would probably keep me out!! J

*I still use a saucer plate for my meals or a very small bowl for soups… and a baby spoon to help me with portion size and bite size. If I use normal adult utensils and plates I find I get bigger portions on my plate and take bigger bites.

*Don’t eat/snack in the evenings… this one is a killer for me, I want popcorn (cookies) every night!!! And I can’t stop at a little or just 1.

It all comes down to will power and determination…  A friend of mine who is about 3 years out and has done really well up until recently is drinking Mt. Dew Code Red and eating chips all the time… she’s gained 20 pounds and gone up a clothing size….  She was talking to me on the phone telling me this as she was at the store looking for chips.

Anybody else have any tips/tricks or helpful suggestions to keep away from the snacks or falling back into the old routines?

Judy

Thanks for the encouragement.  You are right, we all know the rights and wrongs but I guess as you call it, it helps to whine to somebody sometime.  Thanks for your response.

D'Ann,
I told you I'd let you know what I found out about a tummy tuck.
