I didn't do any "testing" but I did see a cousler a few times.  My insurance had me go through a year of seeing a dietician also.  I think the Bariactric center now has certain classes that people have to go through, I can ask them at the next support group meeting.
Do you live in Evansville?  Just wondering if you couldn't get it done here for some reason.

okay, I remember that now, I did take that long test too and I made the family tree.  Actually, the one on the wall in her office is the one I did.  She wanted me to change the names since she was going to put it up.  That's why the names are like Greg, Marsha, Jan, etc. lol
I wasn't required to do the behavior classes, I think they just started that awhile back.
Judy, I'm glad you remembered all that!  Have you been to any support group meetings?  The next ones are coming up  JAn 15th, Monday at 6pm or Jan 18, thursday at 10am.

After the 2nd visit with her, (I guess I passed) and then they made my

some behavior classes that you are required to take. I've yet to go
to any but they say there are only 2 and they teach you how to change
your behavior with food before the surgery. Hope that helps.. and

I wanted to post some resturants that I know of that will take the gastric surgery card the dotor gives you after have the surgery.  For those of you pre-surgery, it is a blue card that says that you have had gastric surgery and the your stomach holds less than 3 ounces.  And that we request him/her be allowed to purchase a child's portion.  I do know that Golden Correl going out toward USI DID NOT take it,  they just wanted to give me 50 cents off my meal.  So we all left.  But I have found a couple of places that it works at, if you know of any others, please tell me.

Los Bravos - let me order a childs meal, but it was still too large for me
Sirlion Stockade - only charged me at a 10 year olds price $5, and acted like they do it all the time, so that's a plus.

I know some places we go the kids meals are still too big for me or they are all fried stuff, so I started to just order sides.  One of my families favorite place to eat is Taco Bell, and I have found their pintos and cheese to be a great meal.  It's protein and tastes good.

Anyone have thougths on this?

They are really great at the St. Marys Bariatric Center.  They can answer a lot of questions, I know, I asked a lot of questions.  Will you be going to the support group meetings before surgery.  You can come before the surgery and the people there are really nice too.
Let me know any questions you have.

I found that I could chew the food to a pureed state just as well and
I got to enjoy it more that way too. I did buy everything on the
list. (are you going through St. Marys?) I bought sugar free pudding
and jello, low fat cream soups. and the low fat, low sugar yogurt.
Do you have your protein powder yet? Tuna was a life saver and the
canned chicken too. I would just mix a little of one of those and put
a drop of light mayo in it and make a "tuna salad". When I wanted
some thing hot I would eat cream of wheat or the low fat creamy soups.
It was still hot out then and I loved to eat the sugar free
popsicles, well, still do. I figured that would add to my water
intake. Crystal Light or the other brands that have the packettes you
add to your bottle water, they are great. Walmart has lots of
different flavors. One of my favorite is a cranberry flavor. I did
eat some cottage cheese and eggs.

Hope I spelled that right... From what I understand the Indiana State
Guidelines for Gastric Bypass are Diabetes, Heart Disease, Asthma,
Sleep Apnea and Hypertension. My insurance company, Anthem through
Toyota (Toyota pays, Anthem just administers the policy for them) says
that my diabetes is not severe enough. Dr. Royalty at St. Mary's first
told me I should get a lawyer because she thought that was against the
Indiana guidelines or something. (I so don't understand all the legal
stuff) We can't afford a lawyer so that is out of the question. It
would be easier to just gain 16 pounds and get my BMI up to 40, and I
refuse to do that on purpose. Though stress might do it for me if I'm
not careful.
From what I understand, the hypertension is a done deal. It is
considered a co-morbidity and it should get me the surgery. I never
thought I would be happy to hear I have high blood pressure ;(

Patricia,
I have a friend that went through the surgery last year. She's lost
over 100 pounds and still losing. She has the same insurance as I do,
but she had a few more co-morbidities then I do I think. She also had
severe back pain and thought the gastric bypass would help her back,
but it didn't touch it. She just recently had to have back surgery. So
even if you do get the gastric bypass you might not want to count on
all your back problems going away. I'll try to get her to post on this
board and maybe she can enlighten you on what she went through and
help you get the help you need for your back.

Good luck to you!!

I went to WW three times before too, so I guess I'm a WW flunky too.  lol
I had blood work done today and weighed at the doctores office, they have me at 62 pounds lost since Aug 21.
Ladies, I wish I knew how to help you get the GBP done.  Also, I am trying to get more post-op people to join.  Maybe someone else will help us find the answer for you.
Hang in there.
D'Ann

Welcome Judy!

I joined this group with the intent of having GBP in the near future.
I had calculated my BMI at 39.9. When I went to GBP center at Deaconess, they calculated me to be 37.5, and I thought my three bad disc in my lumbar (low) back would count, no dice. Having a bad back that makes you wish you were dead, isn't the same thing as having a disease that actually will get you.

Sounds like from your experience, that even that may not help me.
I was hospitalized just a few days ago, with chest pain. Now I have a diagnosis of hypertension. Devil if I know if that will help to qualify me for GBP.
I have gone the WW path. I lost nearly fifty pounds, only to find it back on me after I stopped smoking...and it brought friends. I weigh more now than I did before I lost weight.
I'm a WW flunky.
:)

I'm sorry to hear about your loss.
Miscarriage is very hard to deal with. So many well wishing friends say the cruelest things. Of course they don't realize it. They just want to be *helpful*
The very real child, to you...is so easily dismissed by others.
You will eventually stop grieving, but for the rest of your life when someone ask how many children you have...
You will mentally count that child, as you answer the question with a number that counts only the ones you gave live birth to, or adopted.

Good luck on your appeal.

Hi all,

I would check it out. I have been with St. Mary's Gastric Bypass

Hypertension. The Hypertension was recently diagnosed, so they turned
me down because my diabetes isn't "severe" enough. I'm now at the
Level 2 appeal process, meaning it's a phone conference with my doctor
and myself pleading my case to team from Anthem. Hopefully with the
new diagnoses of hypertension they will approve it.

It's been a very emotional roller coaster for me. I'm 46 and have 3
sons, ages 23, 20 and 4. Yes, I said 4!! My husband and had tried to
have another one, but we made the decision if we weren't pregnant by
45 we would stop trying and I would go with the surgery so I would be
alive and healthy for my youngest and all the grand-babies coming
along. A couple of months ago I discovered I was pregnant... a lapse
after a my 2nd denial from the insurance company. I was in a panic and
very scared of having a baby at 46 with all my complications. But i
figured God doesn't give you anything you can't handle so I accepted
it, then miscarried!! I was a wreck. On top of it all, I went to a
high risk pregnancy doctor at Deaconess and she was more concerned
with my weight then with the loss of the baby. She had lost 100 pounds
doing weight watchers and very determined to get me into it again. She
had me sobbing and feeling worse about my weight then anyone in my
entire life. I have never felt so low and worthless as I did in her
office.

Anyways... now I'm back on track and waiting for the Level 2 appeal
with Anthem to go through, hoping the hypertension will get me the
surgery. Today I start my exercise routine. We have weights and a
semi working tread mill in the basement, so once my son is at
preschool I get to work. Wish me luck!!

I'm really glad I found this group. If I'm approved I'm sure I'm going
to need the support of people that have been through it. Even though
they have given me a list of people to call, I think it will be easier
doing it online and getting to know people this way.

Hi Judy,
Welcome to the group.  It is a small group right now but hope it will get bigger soon.
You sure have been through a lot!!  This is a place where you can talk about what you are going through, we've been there too.  Maybe not the exact same thing, but we know about the waiting and other steps to take before surgery.  I waited for 1 year to get approved by my insurance.  I have a 4 and 6 year old.  I, like you, wanted to be healthy and be able to keep up with my kiddos.
I really like the ladies at the St. Marys Bariatrics.  I went to a support group meeting the other night. It is great to talk with others going through the same thing.  I'm sure they have told you about it,  I know that you can come to the meetings pre-surgery also.
I had my surgery on Aug 21, 06 and have lost over 60 pounds.  I will try to answer questions you might have.  Please keep us updated and how everything is going.

Oh my goodness!  Since you have really thought about this I would go ahead and go get weighed and measured.  Maybe that day you will be heavier, you know which days those are, right?  Or maybe get an afternoon appointment.  I guess I shouldn't be saying this but since you are so close and I know with me, it would have only been a matter of time and I would be heavier anyway.
I know that I weighed with clothes on.  Only when I saw the surgeon did I have to put one of those nice airy gowns on.
I'm not familar with Deaconess' program but I had to go through a year of seeing a dietician and a counselor.  That made sure that I was sure.  Not everyone has to do that, my insurance wanted it that way, and I was glad it did (after the fact) I learned a lot in that year.  Oh, and while in that year, I started having some health issues related to obesity, imagine that.
things do happen for a reason,
Keep us informed on how it is going and if you have any questions. And good luck!

I"m out of luck, so to speak. Who would have thought being relatively healthy in spite of being obese would work against me in any way?
They did ask me to come and weight and get my height measured since I am so very close.
I wonder if they will weight me clothed or make me wear a cute little butt out gown to be weighted? Winter jeans and walking shoes I may just be over the line, but relativley naked...I don't know.
Who would have ever thought that I would be considering trying to GAIN, in order to lose?
I was really beginning to believe I can commit to this, and suddenly it just isn't one of my options.

Does that sound crazy?
I am actually thinking of trying to gain weight in order to have bypass?
It's only a couple of pounds.
Lot easier to put it on, than to take it off.

Maybe this is just fates way of making me step back and be sure of myself.

Does anyone have any recipes that we can have on the gastric bypass
diet?
Or tell me your favorite snack item.

I really like to put low fat Peanut butter on 2 whole wheat crackers,
it really satifies my salty craving and is filling.

As far as a recipe, I like to use a low fat cream of chicken or celery
soup and add mixed veggies and pieces of chicken. Season to taste.
That's a quick and easy way to get chicken and vegatable soup or if
served thicker tastes like chicken pot pie.

Hi Rayanne, did you try St. Marys Bariatric Center?  They helped me with mine and helped with my insurance.  My insurance paid for most everything of mine.  But my hubby is an employee of St. Marys and we carry their insurance.  BUT you can still try.  Let us know what you find out.

I understand what you are saying.  I have two children, Natalie age 4 and Nathan age 6.   I want to be able to keep up with them, play with them and just be around when they get older.  My family history is heavy with diabetes, arthritis and obesity,  I didn't want to go down that road.  I'm 36 and had signs of arthritis in my right knee and was boarder line diabetic.
I feel so much better after having the gastric bypass, I've lost 46 pounds so far.
I'm not familiar with Deaconess but I have heard of their program and I'm sure it is an awesome one.
It is great to have a supportive husband too.  My hubby is great, he is cooking with the foods I can eat and so he and my kids are eating healthier too.    That's a bonus!
I had people tell me too that I didn't need the surgery.  Well, they weren't going to my doctors appointments, know what I mean?  I chose to not tell a lot of people, just close family that I knew would be supportive.  Once I had my surgery date, I told more people, but by then I had went through a year of talking to the dietitian, counselor and doctors at the Bariatric Center.  There wasn't anything they could say to make me change my mind.  I was doing this for ME, anyway.
Let me know if you have any other questions.  I'm working on getting more post surgery people on this group.  It is good to hear from different people with different backgrounds.
talk to you soon,
D'Ann

Thank you D'Ann for responding.
I live in Boonville. My hubby works at Deaconess Gateway (lab) and our insurance is with them. So if it does happen, it will have to happen at Deaconess. Hubby has been talking to his co-worker who had gastric bypass. He is very supportive of me. Deaconess has a *Live Well* program. I think that is the right name. I will have to go through them to get the process started.
I told my daughter in law that I was considering it. She said WHY?
You aren't THAT fat. I tried to explain to her that I felt at 47, if I was going to be able to maintain a body weight that was reasonable for my body frame...I would have already been there.
It isn't about how well my body (or my clothing) hides fat it's about how the extra weight is affecting my body.
I have three herniated disc, my back hurts constantly. I'm too young to be wasting the rest of my life sitting in my recliner with a heat pad to my back.
It isn't about how I look. It's all about how I feel physically.
I know different people want the bypass for different reasons.
Having the energy to drag my own body around enough to enjoy my grand babies is one good reason. I'm not an *old* grandma, I shouldn't have to act like one.
I am afraid of developing heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.
I have seen a neurologist for my back, after MRI. He said the best thing I could do is lose weight. I've gained since then. I feel like I'm committing slow suicide with a fork and spoon. I am hoping it is going to be possible for me to have the bypass surgery.
I am expecting it to be ruff, but the main thing for me is, one done I can't back out, or fall off the dieting wagon as I have done before.
When I was still smoking I used to say I could quit, in fact I was good at quiting. I've done it many times.
That's the way I feel about losing the weight. Sure, I can diet. I can lose weight, I've lost and found myself several times over.

I got mine through the St. Mary's Bariatric Clinic.  They are really nice in there.  My insurance did pay for it, but since I did not have a year of a doctor supervised diet, I did that through the Bariatric clinic.  Therefore, I went through a year of appointments to get the surgery done.  I only had to go in like every 3 months, but they monitored my diet and exercise.  They had told me to try to lose like 10 pounds and I did at one point, but I yo-yoed the whole year and ended up at the same weight.  My insurance which is through St. Marys justed needed to see that on paper.
I didn't mind the year really, it gave me time to think about it, study and research on gastric bypass and get to know everyone at the clinic.
Have you talked to them?
They have a monthly support group and I am going to try to get people from there to join in this group.  I started the group because I didn't see any one for this area.
Did I help any?
