AAWS Inc. exists outside of an AA group.... it is an outside entity.
Considering that it uses the AA name as part of its own: then you will
be endorsing and supporting their claims by writing to them as AA
groups or members.
AAWS Inc. is not us. It is not AA. Accept it. Deal with it.
The solution - get a copying machine..... cut off all support.
My mail below was sent to all the addies I sent to the group, so they will have them in their Inboxes at GSO when they come to work tomorrow. I would really appreciate it if any of you that are willing would send them a mail as soon as possible. If just ten of us in the US/Canada had our mails there in the morning, I think we might get a rise out of them and maybe the employees that get the mails don't even know about it yet.
Gary this is an excellent idea. I dont know how much work is involved but perhaps a page on AAMO-Info that briefly explains the situation and includes a form letter that a member can add his or her name to and click to send it off to all the addresses. The form letter could be edited by the member to add or subtract something or just send it the way it is or their can be a box to write their own letter. Then all we have to do is send the link to our friends. I have seen this on other sites. Name, city, sobriety date could also be an option. Perhaps Norm can give his knowledge about this idea.
I was just informed that AAWS has tried to shut down the Just For Today e-mail postings that send a daily snippet from AA literature to thousands of AA members around the country. How sad! These people are doing a wonderful service to our fellowship and have helped thousands of alcoholics. They give full credit to AAWS copyrights and a full disclosure of non-affiliation. I do not believe there is any treat to AAWS property, while there is an AAWS threat to those that carry the AA message for free and for fun.
I am a member of AA. My understanding is that our primary purpose is to carry the AA message, not to hold power or protect our property rights. Please send this mail on to whoever might need to see it. I would like a response from someone who can tell me how this activity can be justified in light of our spiritual principles. Also, please understand that I am well versed in these subjects (copyright protection) and need a real explanation, not the ones that have been used and disproved regarding other attempts to threaten and sue AA members for carrying the message as we are encouraged in 'Alcoholics Anonymous'.
One more time, AAWS has stepped over the line and is using our contributions to disrupt the carrying of the AA message. One more time, AAWS is acting like a 'for profit' corporation that Tradition Seven says should be separately incorporated, set well outside of AA, and should not use the AA name. They also suggest that we may want to 'freely discard' such 'secondary aids'.
This mail is sent without the knowledge of the folks at JFT and was not requested by them.

Like any other commercial interprise, if the consumers of the
products have a beef they are welcome to voice their complaint and
cut off financial support.
So what if AAWS exists outside of an AA group! So does JFT that is
providing services to AA members. AAWS has interferred with the
services that JFT has freely provided to AA members. That's
something to bitch about AT the outside enterprise if we, as
individuals are inclined. We can also bitch at our local service
providers (Intergroups, Areas) and let them know we don't like the
actions of AAWS and we want them (Intergroups and Areas) to stop
obtaining services from AAWS until AAWS starts to comply with their
own principles outlined in the Traditions and AA Service Manual.
You can find many contacts info at http://my.aainfo.org.

Like Mark, this JFT event is another thing AAWS has done that pisses me off. First time I learned of something like this, Javier (Seccion Mexico GSO Trustee) was sentenced to jail in an AAWS instigated lawsuit. I joined mo+recovery.org (the obsolete first version of this newsgroup). I worked hard to learn and understand how NY corporations have virtually screwed AA members and AA groups over the last 20-25 years (70+ years if you're really keeping track). I've also worked hard to help keep AA members and groups informed so they can make their own determinations about the controversial ongoings that we often support when we put money in an AA basket.
I recently did some work on an associated web site (aainfo.org) to the web site that houses our "public controversy" files (aamo.info). This web site (aainfo.org) primarily provides AA contact information.
It occurred to me that ultimately "we" are the consumers of AAWS products and then it occurred to me that on aainfo.org folks can go to find their local and area AA "trusted servants" contacts. Like a boycott of products that are advertised on some objectionable show or what-not, we here can do something similar by writing or emailing our local AA contacts and complain about the AAWS threats and litigations like with JFT.
Ultimately, the (US and Japan) contacts listed at http://my.aainfo.org/index.php are the primary consumers of AAWS publications. Why not tell them how we feel? Let them contact AAWS in addition to our individual efforts.
Folks here sometimes ask, "So what are we doing about it?" Well here is a way to find your local contact and voice your objection to AAWS activity. I figure if enough folks contact their local AA intergroups and Areas then AAWS will eventually get the message loud and clear and they will get it before the next conference in April.

And no group, regional committee, or individual should ever take any action that might greatly affect A.A. as a whole without conferring with the trustees of the General Service Board. On such issues our common welfare is paramount.
Verb to confer (intransitive) To have discourse; to consult, discuss; to compare views; to deliberate.
Yeah right. Lets ask Matthew and Seccion Mexico about their conferring with the GSB. Oh Yeah, they wouldnt see them.

You might try to contact Leo (Albertan Leonard M. Blumenthal, LL.D, a Class A) for the next few weeks also. I don't have his email address but you can use the snail mail address below for General Manager.

Hello Mark: You should be angry. What I'm going to tell you will piss you off even more because you've likely been mislead regarding the information I'll be giving you. AAWS is a publishing company that uses the AA name, Alcoholics Anonymous World Services. It is wholey owned by GSBAA, the General Service Board of Alcoholics Anonymous, another company that uses the AA name. That is the short answer to your questions. There is a book, the AA Service Manual, http://aa.org/ en_pdfs/en_ bm-31_07- 08.pdf, that describes the relationship between the AA fellowship (you and me, I presume) and the NY corporations (GSBAA, AAWS, The Grapevine) that presumes to represent us. That book has complicated descriptions of GSRs, DCMs, DCMCs, Area Officers, General Service Conference (GSC) Delegates, General Service Board (GSB) Trustees, conferences, committees, ad nausea. It all boils down to a couple things that may relate to you, me, and, or, our AA groups. Your "Area Delegate" goes to a General Service Conference, a GSB sponsored event, every April, (new delegate every two years). The delegates listen primarily to a bunch of GSB or AAWS generated nonsense then they practice a bunch of mumbo-jumbo that would make the US congress proud. In the end they vote on the nonsense and give advice or recommendations to the GSB (if they do anything at all). The GSB is in no way legally obliged to take the advice or recommendations from your delegates at the GSC! If you or I don't like it (or our group hates it) that they (GSB et al) don't listen and act appropriately on our delegate's input, we are supposed to put pressure on them to change their money grubbing ways by stopping out financial contributions to them. Nevermind that they are primarily supported by sales of literature, much of it outside of the AA fellowship. Finally the ultimate thing we can do is what is we are doing here. And what we do at http://aamo. info/#opp. Essentially that is "that we shall need to inform the general public also; especially upon misuses of the name Alcoholics Anonymous." I forgot to mention that the publishing company, AAWS Inc, has a public relations office called the General Service Office that presumes it is the warehouse of accumulated wisdom of AA information. If you bitch about what AAWS is doing to JFT you'll probably get your nonsense reply from some GSO employee. There's a nice picture on page 84 of http://aa.org/ en_pdfs/en_ bm-31_07- 08.pdf of the AAWS functional structure. GSO is that part under "Support Services Manager". I don't see the 'legal department' but I do know they usually use Cindy Weber (http://www.sughrue. com/attorneys/ detail.aspx? id=60d11a1c- 4bbd-4132- b2f0-865be443fce 5 , an outside agency/lawfirm) to threaten websites for carrying the AA message. I don't know if they used her in this particular case, maybe someone at JFT will pass that along to me. Hope this helps some with what you're feeling.

AAWS is supposed to be a service entity that serves the Groups of AA. But the answer to your second question should clear that up. They are responsible to no one.

Just for amusement Gary,
The particular passage you offer from JFT isn't copyrighted
despite the claim that it is. It clearly says it is from ES&H which
is reprints of 1st and 2nd edition Big Book stories which are both
in the public domain due to neglect by AAWS in renewing the
copyrights.
Stars Dont Fall - Countess Felicia Gizycka, New York City. (p.
401 in 2nd edition, p. 400 in 3rd edition.)
The Independent Blonde - Nancy F., New York City (p. 532 in 2nd
edition.) "She was impressed on coming to A.A. to meet a countess
(Felicia Gizycka, Stars Dont Fall.)"
Someone check that I'm not mistaken, my 1st & 2nd editions have
been "lifted" by folks who thought they needed them more than I do.
Also Jim at silkworth.net has a different story for Felicia from the
Grapevine:

This is the re-print policy from AA headquarters website. Is the internet different when it comes to reprints? Another sad day in AA. Greg Reprint Policy Our reprint policy, however, is different from our licensing policy. As stated in The A.A. Service Manual:
“Local A.A. publications are permitted to quote a phrase, sentence or
brief paragraph excerpted from A.A. literature such as The Big Book,
Alcoholics Anonymous, the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, The A.A. Service Manual
and Conference-approved pamphlets without a prior, written request to
do so…, (accompanied by a credit line (that) should read: Reprinted from (name of publication, page number), with permission of A.A. World Services, Inc.)”
Non-A.A. individuals and entities may not reprint A.A. copyrighted
materials without prior approval granted pursuant to a written request. --- On Sun, 11/30/08, Gary Becktell <gk@kitcarson. net> wrote:

Below is a typical example of a JFT post. The credits and disclosure at the bottom clearly are allowable under copyright laws, AAWS rights are clearly protected. This is simply an attempt to disrupt a 12th Step process. AAWS has really gone awry.
I would like to encourage all on this list to write AAWS through their GSO. There is no address (e-mail) that I could find for AAWS, so I have made a list of all the e-mail addies that I could find @ GSO. These addies are for the various service desks and double for each region. I will Bcc my mail to them to this list.
Also, please send this info to all your friends that may want to participate. Maybe they could come to work tomorrow with a few thousand e-mails in their Inboxes.
AA taught me how not to drink. And also, on the twenty-four hour plan, it taught me how to live. I know I do not have to be “queen of them all” to salve a frightened ego. Through going to meetings and listening, and occasionally speaking, through doing Twelve Step work, whereby in helping others you are both the teacher and the student, by making many wonderful AA friends, I have been taught all the things in life that are worth having. I am no longer interested in living in a palace, because palace living was not the answer for me. Nor were those impossible dreams I used to have the things I really wanted.

It really seems that way Norm. I am at a loss to think of a reason. The only benefit I can think of with attacking those that seem to carry the message for love and for free is to make our recovery program into just a treatment support system. The obvious benefit that someone who utilizes basic Big Book AA can think of is a larger number of retreads and a big turn around with newcomers which increases literature sales. Like someone sent me some 8 to10 years ago;
---------- AA has recently announced that the 20 millionth copy of the Big Book has been sold. They noted that the one million book mark was reached in 1975.
In 1975 AA claimed 750,000 members which are remarkably close to the number of sales.
But look at what has happened in the last 25 years. AA has sold an additional 19 million books, but its world wide membership has stalled at slightly under 2 million.
While in 1975, there was 1. 25 Big Books per AA member; today there are 10 Big Books per AA member.
From a slightly different angle, it is instructive to compare the growth of AA membership to the sale of Big Books over the last 25 years. For that period, it took the sale of 16 Big Books to get one additional member for AA. ----------
It has been my observation that AAWS is particularly hateful towards those who are very successful at carrying the AA message to those who want to receive it.
It looks like JFT is handling their run in with AAWS with style and class where AAWS once again shows their true colors.

Subject: [GSOwatch] Herbert Spencer Didn’t Write It? (that principle is contempt prior to investigation)
Oh No!
“There is a principle which is a bar against all information, which is proof against all arguments and which cannot fail to keep a man in everlasting ignorance - that principle is contempt prior to investigation.”
- Herbert Spencer
That’s the way it looks on page 568 of the Big Book. Well, apparently, Herbert Spencer didn’t write it!

Hi group,
I hope and pray that AAWS has gone through the 5 stages of loss,
since finding out that they let the copyrights lapse on the big book.
1. Denial and Isolation
2.Anger
3. Bargaining
4.Depression
5. Acceptance
It sure seems that "losing" the copyright has helped the sales and
profit margin immensely.
Now, when the "royalties" are no longer an issue( soon I think), AAWS
need not worry about a countersuit from the heirs.
This should remove the last legal "fear" of the corporation to
initiate legal proceedings.
If the trustees can make the GSO self supporting from voluntary
contributions and not accept money from Book profits to finance "NY
Headquarters", it will be a miracle.
Miracles are still possible in AA.
Greg
I sent an e-mail to the owner of Nashville Recovery asking if anyone contacted him.

I doubt it unless they got honest with themselves, took the Steps and had a spiritual awakening. I doubt that has happened since no 9th Step has occurred to the AA members and groups they have harmed.
Hi Norm, Does anyone know of any current litigations? Could it be possible that AAWS has come to its senses and won't sue anybody anymore? Has anyone seen this site? Nashville Recovery It's one of the few websites out there with the whole 12x12 on it.

During the "German Litigations" one of the complaints was that giving away so many free Big Books was harming AAeV (the German AAWS) profits. In the AAeV report to their General Service Conference for the same year they bragged that they had a record breaking year in sales of their Big Book. That upside down triangle with the groups at the top comes to mind. I imagine that groups routinely turn the other cheek when it comes to things like the treasurer running off with the prudent reserve. Shouldn't those lower on the triangle follow the example of those who are leading? If this were true, there probably wouldn't be lawsuits and the many other violations of AA traditions and principles. Seems pretty simple to me. AA corporations ought to operate on the same principles as the AA Fellowship. Doesn't seem very complicated to me. I can imagine the screams of horror now.... "but we'll lose money!" Yeah, probably property and prestige too, but luckily for us, God has plenty of all of it and can supply all of that stuff that we need.
Bless, Norm

Hi Group,
The following is taken from the "guidelines" on Finance put out by GSO.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Question: Our treasurer just ran off with the money. What should we do? Answer: Unfortunately, this sort of thing, though rare, does occur. Though legal action is always an option, most groups avoid it.
