My doctor tells me that Mk 518 and Prezista are available to me now but not TMC125. She is running a GRACE study on TMC125 whose protocol states that only FDA approved meds can be taken in conjunction with it. Since MK518 is waiting final approval (not till Oct) it is ruled noncompliant for the study.
Nelson, are you aware of another way to get these three drugs together in combination?
TMC 125 can be obtained via expanded access but most people may already have resistance to it. It is imperative that your doctor tells you if your virus has the main mutations that renders TMC 125 ineffective.
MK 518 can be obtained also via expanded access. Their web site is http://benchmrk.com/secure/earmrk/earmrk.html
Prezista is already approved and can be obtained by prescription
Your doctor may be one of those that only likes to enroll people in studies since they pay for patients to enroll. Expanded Access Programs (EAPs) cost doctors money since most pharma companies do not pay for enrollment so many doctors decide not to enroll in them. Tibotec pay $500 per EAP patient and Merck does not pay at all.
I think any patient with multidrug resistance is doing himself/herself a diservice by seeing a doctor who does not participate in EAPs
