Thanks to Laura for this Frugal Baby Tip!

Has anyone ever found a use for these? They're not biodegradable, so
you can't flush them, and who wants to throw poop filled liners in the
trash!?

Well, I put four of them together in a pile, and overlocked them
together with my sewing machine (or you could sew them by hand), so
that I had a nice thick diaper liner. Then I can use them over and
over again for a super staydry liner.

Thanks to Cathy for this Frugal Baby Tip!

Parents magazine said that a disposable diaper could be used as a
breast compress for engorgement because it stayed hot for a long time
(when filled with warm water) think about that - a peed in diaper is
98.6 degrees and stays that way.

Well, the nurse at the hospital soaked a disposable diaper and heated
it up in the microwave to use as a warm compress to heat up
Christopher's foot before she did a heel prick. I wondered why it
didn't cool off right away - she had to keep doing the prick over and
over because his blood wasn't flowing well.

Subject: Diapering: Directions for altering Prefolds to Fitted

Thanks to Stephanie for this Frugal Baby Tip!

I used Premium regular size prefolds from
www.greenmountaindiapers.com. You could alter the directions slightly
for a smaller or larger size. I plan on buying a few premie and infant
sized to alter for the next baby. The regular is just right on my 8
month-old 20 lb baby with lots of room to grow.

1. Start by tacking elastic along the top/back under the surge line.
Zigzag tack 1/2 from either side stretched to outer edges of center
layers. Stretch as much as needed to meet your needs. I think I've
been using about 1 1/2 to 2 inches. This give a side stretch. I've
found it stretches better than along the center section due to the
thickness difference, but if you want to try it in the center, go for it!

2. Add in snaps (non-poky side) or Velcro to both sides along the same
line as elastic, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch from outer edges. If you don't
want closures you can leave this step out and secure with pins or
Snappis. I zigzag stitch the elastic and snaps. I am prefering
prefastened snap strips. Pull it apart and put 3 snaps on each side,
sewn onto the very outer edge so the strips stick out like the
tape/Velcro of disposables. You would sew the Velcro in the same way.
(With Velcro, I would add fold back tabs.)

3. Fold over, and while stretching out to full length, carefully sew a
seam following the surging line already on the prefolds. Be careful to
not sew onto the elastic.

4. Rotate to bottom/front of diaper. (If not using snap strips or
Velcro, skip to step 5.) Sew Velcro or snap strip (poky side) to outer
edge at desired height, leaving room to fold down and stitch. I leave
enough room for folding the edge back over to allow a good inch or 2
from snap line to top edge. (I just measured it at 3 1/4 inches from
the raw edge.) I use 6 snaps across the middle section. (My snap
strips were too narrow to sew nicely along outer edges, so I zigzag
stitched vertical lines along outer edges and between each snap.)

5. Fold down/in about 2-4 inches depending on size for prefold
andbaby. Fold corners of flap in/under. Sew straight seam along all 3
folded edges. (Looks kind of like a sealed envelope.)

6. Mark for side elastic gussets by folding sides in so the outer edge
is flush with the closest inner section seam. That fold is the line
you want to tack the elastic to. I use a pencil to mark the inside.
(It's actually easier to measure out before sewing.) I make 2 marks
about 6-7 inches apart, one near top of dipe and one near bottom. I
tack the elastic (1/4 inch) on the mark closest to the back of the
diaper. Don't cut elastic, yet. It's easier to do the next step
without having to stretch the elastic out while sewing.

7. Fold the side back in with elastic on the inside, then fold over
again so the second fold brings the material over into the middle
section of dipe. The elastic is now hidden inside the fold. Then I sew
a strait seam 3/4 to 1 inch from the outside fold, being careful to
not sew in the elastic. Go the full 6-7 between both tack marks. This
sets up your gusset. Pull eastic until you reach desired stretchiness,
then hold tight or pin and zigzag stitch over tack spot near fold. Cut
elastic or see step 7 for alternate idea.

8. If you want to be fancier, you can stretch again and tack down
right under front side corder for added stretch.

REPEAT steps 6-8 for other side.

9. For a more finished look, sew along folded in outer edge from
gusset seam to outer corners.

It sounds complicated, but it's not bad. The great thing is since you
are not cutting the diaper at all, you can use a seam ripper when you
make a mistake. (I've ripped a lot of seams so far.) My biggest tip is
to remember to drop your foot completely each time.

It is often thick enough that it feels tight even without the foot
dropped. But when I don't drop it, the machine "pukes" thread all over
the place. I can try to take pics as I go with the next one, so you
can get a better feel. You could also just do the gussets and fold in
the top and bottom each time you fasten to baby. That would still help
contain the poopies and make changing a little quicker.

HAPPY SEWING!!

When I had my my first baby I used this tip - works like a charm! Ordinary
sized coffee cup keeps the cereal warm and has a handle so you can feed baby
with ease :) and after you are done, rinse out & fill with a cup of joe ;)

Toy blocks: why not use paper cups.. stack them, when finished they are
cheap to replace too.

If your low on cash and do your own laundry a extra shower rod plaed in
middle of shower stall works awesome for drying clothes just make sure a
piece of cheap bath mat (rubber) is placed between wall and rod so it won't
mess up paint (somthing I wish I had done ahead of time.)

~*~*~ FRUGAL BABY TIP - April/04 ~*~*~

Going through my linens, about to toss those ragged washcloths and
towel, when it occurred to me that a washcloth is the right size for
a doubler. Cut two layers of towel 1/3 the width of the washcloth and
stitch to the middle of the washcloth using a zig zag stitch, like a
prefold diaper. To use fold into thirds and place inside diaper for a
five layers of terry, quick drying, super absorbant, free doubler.
These can also be used as newborn diapers fastened with a snappi or
just layed inside a wrap cover. - Susanne

To make inexpensive shake toys for your older baby
keep "dirty/damaged" dried beans, rice, etc...when cleaning to
cook. Also keep various sized clear containers with lids from food
items. When you have collected enough to fill any saved container
1/4- 1/2 full (depending on how strong baby is) put dry beans or
rice in and glue top on. Now baby has a fun, new rattle and you
have not spent any money but used those bits you would otherwise
throw out! - Maria

A simple cure for Cradle Cap. I found that none of the "special"

What to do with your old recyclable phone books. Turn them into a
booster chair or step stool. I used masking tape all around the phone
book to prevent it from shifting and sliding. Then I either decoupage

waterproof it I cover all the sides with clear shelf paper, and voila
a booster or step stool for the bathroom. - Kathryn

I know this is going to sound absurd - but it really works!
Home made diaper cream. Mix Crisco shortening with corn starch to
make a paste and apply liberally to baby's bottom. The shortening
provides a barrier to wetness and the cornstarch absorbs any leftover
wetness. Since there are no artificial fragrances or preservatives
it is hypo-allergenic as well. I know it works for my little
princess and for the amount of money you would spend on a
manufactured diaper cream you can make a whole tub of this!

I "invented" a cheap "disposable" training pant for travel. I bought
cotton underpants and put in an extra large overnight femine hygene

training, but they are a good transition to underpants.

~*~*~ FRUGAL BABY TIP - Sept/03 ~*~*~

When our Diaper Duck broke for the second time, we decided not to pay
the shipping to get another replacement. Out of necessity, we
discovered a frugal and effective fix - regular salad tongs work
great for swishing and dunking diapers and for holding the diaper and
flushing at the same time. The tongs have a metal piece that slides
from the hinge end to the holder end to keep the ends closed - when
holding the diaper with the tongs, we slide this metal piece down so
the diaper stays clamped in the tongs. You can swish and dunk without
having to touch the toilet water at all. Sometimes we swish and flush
the big stuff, then just leave the diaper held in the tongs soaking
in the toilet bowl until somebody needs to use the toilet. Rolling
the diaper around the tongs like rolling spaghetti on a fork squeezes
out enough water for the diaper to be whisked into a nearby pail. --

~*~*~ FRUGAL BABY TIP - July/03 ~*~*~

Here is my Frugal Baby Tip - We always keep a small stack of bandanas
in our backpack diaper bag. We are learning what the cowboys learned,
and more. They are thin, lightweight, wash well, don't show stains,
and are pretty much indestructible. We use them for hats, scarves,
diaper changing pads, bibs, light blankets, drool catchers, nursing
shawls, washcloths, teethers, blindfolds, doll blankets and doll
slings, and of course, for handkerchiefs. You can also tie them
creatively to make impromptu toys - little dolls, bunnies, chewy key
chain, etc. They rinse out well on the spot and if you hang them on a
stroller bar they are dry again within an hour. You can get them for
about $5 a dozen, and if you shop online, you can get them in just
about any imaginable color or pattern.

~*~*~ FRUGAL BABY TIP - May/03 ~*~*~

We use Baby Magic wipes they can be washed with the diapers
inumerable times. I lost count and when one finally gets threadbare
(20 washings?) I use it as the pooper scooper. When I have finally
rinsed the poopy diaper, I rinse off the poopy wipe in the rinse
bucket and say farewell. It is so ironic that something intended to
be used one time can be wash 20 or more times. Other brands don't go
as long 2-3 maybe 5 washes and they are very linty but not the Baby
Magics. To think I spent hours making little wipes out of an old
flannel sheet 12 months ago and have yet to use them for a heiny. We
use them as napkins at meal time instead.

I really like a breathable waterproof pad under my baby for diaper-
free time -- like the expensive wool puddle pads (I ordered one
online). But one is not enough.... So now I use pieces of wool
fabricbought from a fabric store, simply cut into the size/shape I
need, with towels or flat cloth diapers spread over it.

We love FuzziBunz but they are expensive. So we save a lot of money
by just using shop cloths - we buy them at Costco, but any large
warehouse or auto parts store will carry. They are white terry cloth
towels. You get about 50 of them for $5 (US) and we fold them in
thirds and use as fillers for the Fuzzi Bunz. They air dry great
because they are so thin and they are very absorbent.

~*~*~ FRUGAL BABY TIP - February/03 ~*~*~

I have a great money saving tip for a stink-free diaper pail!

Here in the US, there is a nationwide home improvement store called
Home Depot. They sell a bucket called the "Multi Purpose Homer Paint
Bucket". It's a bright orange plastic 5 (U.S.) gallon bucket with
handle and lid. If memory serves me the bucket was $4 and the lid was
$2 if I'm wrong it was only a dollar or two more at the most. The
lid fits on really tight and won't leak if you're a soaker and either
way no odors can escape out this bucket. We¹ve been using ours for a
year now and the handle is still strong and the lid still fits
tight. This is the best and cheapest diaper pail I've ever seen!
Home Depot also has a website.

NEWS! Our Deo-Disk supplier went out of business, but we have located
a new supplier and our first order was shipped out to us on February
6th, so should arrive here shortly. They have a fresh citrus smell!

NEWS! Fuzzi Bunz wrote to say their fabric shipment was delayed at
Customs, so they will not be able to get our order out in a timely
manner. But they are working 12 hours a day to get our order out, and
hopefully it will arrive shortly. Their inserts are currently still
out-of-stock.

~*~*~ FRUGAL BABY TIP - January/03 ~*~*~

My name is Deborah Blackwell and I have just become a Mum to 7 week
old Romilly!! She's beautiful! Anyway..I had serious trouble finding
a water resistant changing mat that I could just fold up and throw in
my bag..

The solution came to me after we received a parcel from a friend of
ours it was packed with bubble wrap, the kind with the larger bubbles
but I suppose the smaller bubble wrap would be just as good. I cut
the wrap to make a changing mat and just throw a cloth nappy over the
top when I put in down when we're out or at a friends house..It is
soft for Romilly, waterproof (just in case) and I don't know about
everywhere else but we can buy bubble wrap by the metre in Australia
at the post office or stationery stores for about 50 cents (Aust) per
metre.

It also works as a "nappy free time mat" I just throw it on top of my
lounge room rug add a couple of cloth nappies over the top and she
can have nappy free time without me stressing about the rug...and if
the bubbles get popped (sometimes I can't help myself) or I leave it
somewhere by accident it cost very little to replace it.

Yours sincerely, Deborah Blackwell

This was the cloth diapering bible of the "Great Canadian Cloth
Diapering Revival"! Most of the Canadian wahm diapers
reviewed are no longer being made, but I still see them making
the rounds in the trades and swaps!

Plus, there is some great diapering information that is timeless.

I've been offered a chance at them by the author, but there will
be a limited amount available.

Anyone want to get their hands on a bit of Canadian cloth
