ADA offers interim guidance on infant formula and fluoride
Posted 11/09/2006

"Parents, caregivers and health professionals who are concerned have
some simple and effective ways to reduce fluoride intake from infant
formula":
feeding infants breast milk, widely acknowledged as the most complete
form of nutrition for infants;
for infants who get most of their nutrition from formula during the
first 12 months, choosing ready-to-feed formula over formula mixed
with fluoridated water to help ensure that infants do not exceed the
optimal amount of fluoride intake;
if liquid or powdered concentrate infant formulas is the primary
source of nutrition, it should be mixed with water that is fluoride
free (or contains low levels of fluoride) to decrease the risk of
fluorosis, including water that is labeled purified, demineralized,
deionized, distilled or reverse osmosis filtered water to reduce the
risk of fluorosis.

No Fluoride for Infants, Say Dentists
Monday November 13, 9:01 am ET

NEW YORK, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- To prevent tooth damage, the
American Dental Association (ADA) warned its members that fluoridated
water should not be mixed into concentrated formula or foods intended
for babies one year and younger, in a November 9th ADA e-mail alert.
(1)

But who will alert parents," asks lawyer Paul Beeber, President, New
York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation (NYSCOF).

Two-thirds of U.S. public water suppliers add fluoride chemicals,
based on a disproved theory that fluoride ingestion prevents
cavities. Bottled water with added fluoride is now sold with specific
instructions to mix into formula.(2)

The ADA reports, " ... infants could receive a greater than optimal
amount of fluoride through liquid concentrate or powdered baby
formula that has been mixed with water containing fluoride during a
time that their developing teeth may be susceptible to enamel
fluorosis."(3) The ADA recommends using fluoride-free water.

Enamel or dental fluorosis is white spotting, yellow, brown and/or
pitted permanent teeth. Pictures:
http://www.fluoridation.com/teeth.htm

NYSCOF news releases in 2000 and 2004 (4,5) cited studies linking
fluorosis to infant foods mixed with fluoridated water. Scientific
evidence here: http://www.fluoridealert.org/health/infant/

It took until 2006 for the ADA's alert, following the Food and Drug
Administration's October disapproval of fluoridated bottled water
marketed to babies,(6) and after the recent National Research
Council's (NRC) fluoride report indicated babies are fluoride
overdosed from "optimally" fluoridated water supplies.(7)

"The ADA claims the NRC report didn't question the safety of
fluoridation(8) but it did, as the ADA now admits," says Beeber.

"The NRC also revealed fluoridation's adverse effects to the thyroid
gland, diabetics, kidney patients, high water drinkers and others,"
says Beeber.

Now, the Centers for Disease Control reports that modern science
shows that fluoride absorbs into enamel topically.(9) However,
adverse effects occur upon ingestion. Further, the CDC admits enamel
fluoride concentration isn't inversely related to cavities.

The Environmental Protection Agency is required to consider the most
vulnerable populations when setting allowable water fluoride levels.
To protect babies, allowable fluoride levels should be near zero.

"This should end water fluoridation," says Beeber. "Fluoridation is a
failed concept that must be abandoned before more Americans are
harmed," says Beeber.

Something in the air: nanoparticles and ?

07/25/06

The world's first machine to simultaneously measure two vital
properties of airborne nanoparticle pollution is going on an overseas
trip to a leading atmospheric chemistry laboratory in Switzerland.

The analyzer, developed by the Queensland University of Technology's
International Laboratory for Air Quality and Health, measures the
volatile and hygroscopic (water absorbing) properties of
nanoparticles emitted from vehicles.

Airborne nanoparticles are believed to have a role in the formation
of lung and heart disease.

Nic Meyer and Dr Zoran Ristovski, whose visit is funded by the
European Science Foundation, will take the analyzer to the Paul
Scherrer Institute, near Zurich, where Swiss scientists have built a
copy of the QUT machine.

The two devices will be standardized to enable future collaborative
research in conjunction with researchers from UK and Swedish
universities.

Mr Meyer said the analyzer had opened the door to important research
into the structure and behavior of nanoparticles emitted into the air
from both man made and natural sources.

"It is the first device in the world that can provide information on
two physical properties of tiny airborne nanoparticles
simultaneously," he said.

"Being able to measure these two properties at the same time gives us
a greater probability of identifying the components which make up the
aerosols.

"The instrument can also strip off atomic layers that make up these
particles to give an insight into their structure."

Dr Ristovski said this work could be applied to understanding the
health effects of microscopic nanoparticles thought to lodge in the
lungs after being inhaled that do not pass out of the body as larger
particles do.

"The research shows the smaller the particles are, the more toxic
they are," Dr Ristovski said.

"We can't say why they cause heart and lung problems because the
mechanism is not yet completely understood. However, by determining
the structure and composition of these particles we can begin to
understand the processes involved.

"Once we can describe the properties of nanoparticles, scientists can
model their effects on human health."

Mr Meyer's previous research had shown that nanoparticles from diesel
emissions came from sulphuric acid, ammonia and water.

"As emission reduction devices have become more prevalent on diesel
vehicles there has been a reduction in the black soot component of
these emissions," he said.

"This has led to an increase in levels of volatile nanoparticles
which previously clung to the soot emissions. Determining these
particles' make-up will help reduce these emissions and understand
their health effects."

Sculpture to commemorate fluoride

Associated Press

GRAND RAPIDS — A new 33-foot-high sculpture will commemorate the
city's role as one of the first in the nation to put fluoride in its
water supply.

The blue metal sculpture — created by Dutch artist Cyril Lixenberg —
will sit along the bank of the Grand River in a plaza near the
entrance to the new J.W. Marriott Hotel.

Lixenberg said the work of art evokes cascading water — a reference
to the river and the Grand Rapids water supply. The sculpture, which
will be lit by the hotel as part of its riverfront plaza, will be
built and installed by local steel fabricators. It will be unveiled
when the hotel opens next year.

It will replace an 11-year-old white marble monument whose tooth-
like elements were cracked by vandals and stained by weather, James
Wieland, head of the West Michigan Dental Foundation, told The Grand
Rapids Press for a story published Wednesday.

Even though the 5-ton sculpture will sit on city park land, it will
be maintained by a $50,000 endowment set up by the dental foundation.

Grand Rapids began fluoridating its water supply in 1945 and was one
of the first in the U.S. to do so. Fluoridation has resulted in a 65
percent decline in tooth decay, Wieland said.

Lixenberg, whose work also is featured at Holland Hospital, was
chosen from three finalists, Wieland said.

"We specifically asked that it be fine art and that it not be a
tooth in the river," said Wieland, referring to an earlier campaign
to commemorate the fluoridation program.

California companies report EPA violations

East Bay Business Times - 5:54 PM PST Tuesday

Six California companies including Concord-based Systron Donner Automotive have voluntarily reported environmental violations to the Environmental Protection Agency, avoiding a total of about $400,000 in penalties.

None of the violations caused serious harm to people or the environment and all were corrected, the EPA said.

Systron Donner Automotive, which makes gyroscopes for cars, avoided the biggest potential fine of all six companies - $127,189 - for failing to report releases of hydrogen fluoride and lead between 2001 and 2004.

Under the EPA's small business compliance policy, the EPA will eliminate or significantly reduce penalties for businesses with fewer than 100 employees that discover violations of environmental law and promptly disclose and correct them.

"This is a win for communities, for business and for the EPA," said Enrique Manzanilla, the EPA's Communities and Ecosystems Division director for the Pacific Southwest region. "(It's the) responsible action for companies to take."

The other companies cited were Sieger Engineering Inc., CSL Inc., Triangle Digital LLC, CoorsTek Inc. and Three Bond Co. Ltd.

Representatives of Systron Donner Automotive were unavailable to comment.

Doctor warns ME city of fluoridation risks

BANGOR, ME – A Bangor pediatrician has advised the city council against continuing fluoridation of the public water supply after seeing an increase in the number of young patients who developed spots on their teeth because of excessive fluoride ingestion, the Bangor Daily News reported on November 14.

Dr. Leo Leonides, who has practiced in this southern Maine city for more than three decades, said in the story that parents mistake the spots on their children's teeth for calcium, when they actually indicate "an early stage of fluorosis."

In addition to being a cosmetic nuisance, the fluoride travels to bones and organs, and has the potential to damage these parts of the body, Leonides was quoted as saying in the report.

Bangor has been fluoridating its water since the 1960s to help prevent tooth decay, but city leaders indicated they would consult with the Bangor Water District on the issue and further investigate the effects of fluoridation, according to the article.

Flouride in tap water a health risk, doctor warns

Bangor Daily News

BANGOR — A Bangor pediatrician told members of the City Council on Monday evening that it's time to revisit the longtime practice of adding fluoride to the city's public water supply.

Fluoride, which occurs naturally in some water sources and is monitored as an environmental contaminant, also is added in small quantities to many public water supplies across the country to help prevent tooth decay. Like many American communities, Bangor has been fluoridating its water since the 1960s.

Decades ago, when public health officials first recommended adding fluoride to water supplies, "the science wasn't so good," according to Dr. Leo Leonides, who has practiced in Bangor for more than 30 years. While he doesn't dispute claims that fluoride in controlled doses may protect teeth from disease, he said, a mounting body of evidence shows that fluoride's risks as a water additive override its potential benefits.

Leonides testified that many of his young patients have developed white spots and mottling on their teeth as a result of ingesting too much fluoride.

"Their parents think it's calcium," he said, "but it's really an early stage of fluorosis." The problem is more than cosmetic, he said. Fluoride taken into the body doesn't simply affect teeth, but also travels to bones, organs and other areas. Studies from China and India show a correlation between a pregnant woman's fluoride intake and the brain development of her fetus. Other studies link fluoride to lowered IQ, according to Leonides.

Fluoride is found in many natural and processed food sources as well as in natural and treated water supplies. Additionally, many toothpastes and mouthwashes contain fluoride, and many youngsters have fluoride painted directly onto their teeth at the dentist's office. Leonides said there's little doubt that this continuous, unregulated exposure has a negative impact on the health of many individuals.

While fluoride may be effective in combating tooth decay, he argued, it should be prescribed on an individual basis as measured drops or tablets, not administered wholesale to the general population. Across the nation, communities are voting against adding fluoride to their water supplies, he said, and Bangor should become the first municipality in Maine to reverse the practice.

Before the council meeting, Leonides discussed a report from the National Research Council that recommends a reduction in the federally accepted levels of naturally occurring fluoride in drinking water.

The study, released in March of this year, reviews associations between blood fluoride levels and a number of health conditions, including neurological disorders, reproductive problems, bone weakness, hormonal deficiencies, organ dysfunction, cancer and others. It recommends a reduction in the federal Environmental Protection Agency's accepted "maximum contaminant level" for naturally occurring fluoride in drinking water, currently set at four parts per million, to some unspecified lower amount.

Most public water supplies that add fluoride maintain a level of one to two parts per million.

City councilors commended Leonides for raising the issue and said they would pursue the matter with the Bangor Water District and investigate how communities in other states have arrived at the decision to stop adding fluoride to their water.

American Dental Association Changes Stance, Adopts Natural Solutions Foundation Position: No Fluoride for Babies

Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

The Natural Solutions Foundation's strongly anti-fluoride position for infants and children is now echoed by the American Dental Association (ADA) which says that children under 1 year should not be exposed to fluoride. Although the US supported fluoride in infant formula during the recent Codex meeting in Chiang Mai, Thailand which dealt with infant formula and other special purpose foods, using data provided by the Natural Solutions Foundation, South Africa pushed the restriction on fluoride in healthy infants' formula through, despite strong US objection. Long a proponent of fluoridation of children's teeth, the ADA joins the Natural Solutions Foundation in pointing out the dangers of the now-debunked toxin in infant's bodies. CCNFSDU will bring its new recommendation prohibiting the addition of fluoride in formula for normal infants to the Codex Alimentarius Commission for approval in July, 2007 although, thanks to US pressure, the toxic metal is still permitted by Codex in the formula of sick children.

Bangkok, Thailand (PRWEB) November 15, 2006 -- The conservative American Dental Association (ADA) altered its position on fluoride for babies to align with the strong opposition of fluoride for babies adopted by the Natural Solutions Foundation. The ADA now recommends that babies younger than one year should not be exposed to fluoride either in water or as an ingredient in fluoride since it causes dental fluorosis (discoloration and weakening of teeth), now classified by the National Research Council as a major health problem. The Natural Solutions Foundation presented formal comments urging the US to oppose the use of fluoride in infant formula prior to the meeting of the Codex Committee on Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU, October 30-November 3, 2006, Chiang Mai, Thailand). Although the US delegate, Dr. Barbara Schneeman, who works for the FDA, vigorously supported the Codex recommendation that babies be exposed to fluoride, South Africa, using the data supplied by the Natural Solutions Foundation in its official comments on the topic, successfully beat back this toxic threat to healthy bottle fed infants. Dr. Schneeman did manage, however, to keep potassium and calcium fluoride compounds in formula for sick babies.

Including this toxic metal in food received by any babies is, according to both the recent ADA position statement and the Natural Solutions Foundation's one as well, a grave mistake which poses significant danger to babies in both the long and short term. On November 9, an ADA email alert advised dentists that "fluoridated water should not be mixed into concentrated formula or foods intended for babies one year and younger" and that babies could receive a greater than optimal amount of fluoride from formula mixed with fluoridated water. ADA listed dangers to babies of dental fluorosis, a discoloration and weakening of teeth but did not specifically point to similar damage to bone which occurs at the same time and in the same dosage ranges. The Natural Solutions Foundation (
http://www.HealthFreedomUSA.org) went further, documenting the serious dangers of fluoride consumption to which infants are even more susceptible than older children and adults. This documentation was presented to the United States before the CCNFSDU meeting without impact on the US position. Other countries, however, rallied around the dangers so clearly present in fluoride and pushed the change through CCNFSDU which resulted in the ban being brought forward on infant formula for healthy children. These dangers include immune suppression, bone cancer, leukemia, brain and other solid malignant tumors, calcification of the pineal gland, neurological damage, increased dental caries, reproductive and other hormonal problems, increase (synergistic) toxicity of other poisons such as aluminum and a host of other serious and life threatening diseases and conditions. In fact, because of the interactive increase in toxicity of aluminum in the presence of fluoride, the combination is associated with increased neurological damage, behavioral changes and toxic neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's Disease.

Water is often treated not only with fluoride but with aluminum salts as well to give it an extra shine and sparkle. Two thirds of all bottled water in the US has added fluoride while some is sold with specific FDA-approved recommendations to use for mixing infant formulas. Fluoridation of water is based on an outmoded belief that fluoridation of water or teeth led to decreased dental cavities (caries). Later research, however, and subsequent reexamination of the original data showed that the published study of the results of the fluoridation study which served as the justification for wide spread fluoridation was seriously flawed. EPA scientists, among others, have called for an end to fluoridation of water since its use is not justified by dental or other science. Despite that, the FDA recently permitted an increase in the permitted levels of fluoride in foods, from pesticide sprays and approved claims for fluoridated bottled water as a preventive measure for tooth decay.

Fluoride's use in water began under the Soviet dictator, Joseph Stalin. In the Gulags or prison camps, political prisoners who were given water with fluoride in it to drink were complacent and placid. The effect was noted and later reproduced by the Nazis in the drinking water provided to people in the death and slave labor camps. Many health freedom advocates question not only the use of a deadly poison with well documented health dangers across the population spectrum, but the use of a dangerous and behavioral numbing chemical in the nation's water supply.

Despite years of contrary propaganda, the ADA now admits that dental fluoride concentrations are not related to a decrease in dental caries, that the National Research Council cites serious problems with fluoride in its report on the topic and agrees with the Natural Solutions Foundation's suggested ban on fluoridation, at least for infants. The New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation (
http://www.orgsites.com/ny/nyscof ) notes "The Environmental Protection Agency is required to consider the most vulnerable populations when setting allowable water fluoride levels. To protect babies, allowable water fluoride levels must be near zero.
The Environmental Working Group analyzed government data in March 2006 and found that babies are over-exposed to fluoride in most major U.S. cities" (
http://ewg.org/issues/fluoride/20060322/index.php).

The World Health Organization, too, recommends that bottle fed babies drink formula mixed in fluoride free water.

Although the Natural Solutions Foundation is sharply critical of most of Codex' decisions, its decision to follow South Africa's lead and ban fluoride at least in formula for healthy infants shows what strong pro-health leadership inside Codex can accomplish. Next tasks, according to Natural Solutions Foundation leaders, include getting all fluoride out of the world standard for infant formula and making sure that no one in the US is exposed to a known carcinogen and multisystem poison.

"We specifically asked that it be fine art and that it not be a
tooth in the river," said Wieland, referring to an earlier campaign
to commemorate the fluoridation program

Sculpture to commemorate fluoride

Associated Press

GRAND RAPIDS β€” A new 33-foot-high sculpture will commemorate the
city's role as one of the first in the nation to put fluoride in its
water supply.

The blue metal sculpture β€” created by Dutch artist Cyril Lixenberg β€”
will sit along the bank of the Grand River in a plaza near the
entrance to the new J.W. Marriott Hotel.

Lixenberg said the work of art evokes cascading water β€” a reference
to the river and the Grand Rapids water supply. The sculpture, which
will be lit by the hotel as part of its riverfront plaza, will be
built and installed by local steel fabricators. It will be unveiled
when the hotel opens next year.

It will replace an 11-year-old white marble monument whose tooth-

To the Manager of the Grand Rapids, Michigan, Marriott

I think you unwittingly allowed the Michigan Dental Society to use
the Marriott to further its political agenda, by allowing a monument
to fluoridation to be erected on Marriott's Grand Rapids property.

Almost 10,000 people signed a petition asking for a moratorium on
fluoridation. Soon it will be sent to Congress and will draw more
attention to fluoridation.

I traveled to Grand Rapids in 1995 to join groups protesting the
50th anniversary of fluoridation. Fluoride's adverse effects were
rarely publicized at that time. We knew that, if we didn't show up,
the newspapers would just write wonderful things about fluoride.

However, now with the internet, anyone who is interested can
type "fluoridation" into a search engine and get a listing of
fluoridation's pro's and con's. As a result, more and more
Americans are voting against fluoridation, going to city councils'
to stop fluoridation and avoiding their fluoridated tap water.
Legislative bodies are increasingly rejecting organized dentistry's
attempts to force them to initiate fluoridation without constituent
approval.

Modern science shows us that fluoridation is ineffective at reducing
tooth decay, harmful to health and a waste of money. And
fluoridation is politically divisive.

America is experiencing a dental health crisis, not from lack of
fluoride - because kids are fluoride overdosed federal statistics
show - but because most dentists refuse to treat low-income people.

Ironically, organized dentistry lobbies legislators to keep the
freedom to choose who they treat and don't treat while taking away
my freedom to choose whether or not I want or need fluoride in my
water supply. "Go buy bottled," they tell me.

I'm sorry the Marriott has been sucked into this controversy. But
the only way I can protest is to avoid staying in any Marriott
facility when I travel and to ask my supporters to do the same.

Yours truly,

Carol Kopf

In response to opinion presented at Bangor City Council's most recent
meeting, "Fluoride in tap water a health risk, doctor warns" (BDN,
Nov. 14), water fluoridation is good science that makes good sense.
Sixty years of research and organizations such as the American Dental
Association, the American Medical Association, the World Health
Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention all
back the claim that fluoride is a safe and effective way to prevent
tooth decay.

We supplement many things (milk with vitamin D, orange juice with
calcium, cereal with folic acid, salt with iodine) for various health
reasons. Studies of water supplemented with fluoride have shown
reduction in childhood cavities of up to 60 percent.

In the past, misinformation regarding side-effects from fluoride and
fluoridated water has been advanced by anti-fluoride fringe groups and
individuals. Removal of fluoride from our water because of their
anecdotal evidences is neither sound science nor prudent policy.

Fluoride is a safe and effective way to prevent the single most common
chronic childhood disease: tooth decay.

          Dear S-R Editor,

Decorated, honorably served U.S. Army (air force division) veteran of Viet Nam,  I've also received the U.S. Military and the Washington State Air National Guard "Meritorious Service" medals/commendations.

Civilian employment prevents my attending daytime meetings.  On my behalf, my wife has been attending Health Board meetings for over nine years.  May, 1997, on my behalf she protested a "back-door" water fluoridation mandate because  I have multiple exposures to "Agent Orange"---a fluoride base, bio-accumulative (very toxic) defoliant chemical weapon, and she and my stepson are medically double-blind-tested "toxic/allergic to fluorine-bearing compounds ('fluorides')."
Since the fifties (like all Native American Indian reservations), all U.S. military reservations have been artificially "fluoridated."  Because "F" is a bio-accumulative poison, to healthfully survive the remainder of my military service, I provided my own fluoride-free, "organically-prepared" food and fluoride-free bottled water and in many other ways carefully avoid excess fluoride exposure---resulting in the same "meritorious" above-average (no absenteeism,no illness) performance for the Washington Air Guard that I have also given my cilvilian employer the past thirty years.

Thorburn supporters claim she's dismissed "without cause."   On several occasions, 'Thorburn has repeatedly failed her employer when "Staff" was directed to stop pushing fluoridation for Spokane unless and until a majority of the BOH agrees to it.  Thorburn's most recent violation of her employer's directive was after the November, 2000, voter defeat of water fluoridation and two subsequent failures of fluoridation proponents to return fluoridation to the ballot.

Dear Editor, Spokesman-Review,

I don't have an Email address.  I am using my Grandmother's PC to send this.  I mailed you a letter once before, about two years ago.

I did not start school until I was eight years old.   I go to a private school.  Until then, my Grandmother used to take me with her when she attended SRHD Board of Health meetings every month.  She started in May 1997.  The meetings were, generally, boring but I remember the times when my grandmother and the other people opposing water fluoridation were made fun of or insulted.  I also remember when the BOH attitude began changing for the better  (possibly when Health Board members began reading instead of dumping into the waste basket what was given them and, hopefully, because they began investigating for themselves).

I was present the first time, several years ago, when the Board voted and then said the matter of water fluoridation was to be dropped unless the Board brought it up again.

I have seen my Grandmother during a fluoride allergy attack (Dr. Thorburn  has said there is no such thing as fluoride allergy).  Several times people whose doctors or dentists have told them the same thing have deliberately, secretly,  given my Grandmother or my fluoride-allergic Uncle, Sean, fluoridated food or water which has made them very sick.  My Uncle almost didn't make his own wedding when someone secretly cooked his dinner the night before in fluoridated water!

I think the Board was right-on in firing Dr. Thorburn.

Sincerely,

F-Fighters,

I think its time to educate the developers of the fluoride hotel and Kirk Gable on the statue to public water fluoridation that's to be built in Grand Rapids, don't you think?

The email from Jason Krueger below is the link to do that. Write, write, write.

I'm going to write that the statue should be a skull and cross bones (and explain why), what about you?

Let's stop this idol from being built!!!

Ms. Orne and Mr. Sabato:

Thank you for airing the segment that took a closer look at water
fluoridation on 11/25/06. People all across the world are becoming more
informed of the chemicals that enter our drinking water.

In Minnesota, our state has been force fluoridated since 1970. No
adjustments have been made to the law despite all the research that has
been released. Less than a month ago, even the American Dental
Association (one of fluoride's biggest supporters) claimed that fluoride
should not be ingested by infants- a strong statement!

Keep up the good investigative work and know that a growing informed
public supports your efforts!

Harmed Babies And Minorities: Acceptable Collateral Damage Of Water Fluoridation?
by Daniel G. Stockin, MPH
posted November 28, 2006

When a wise and dear friend of mine hears an idea that makes real sense, one of her favorite comments is, "Well, honey, that's just plain ol' turnip greens and cornbread common sense!" Unfortunately we're finding out now that adding fluoride to drinking water to prevent cavities simply doesn't make sense any longer – and in fact, stopping it entirely, in every water district in Tennessee, now seems the only sensible thing to do.

Consider the following astounding developments concerning fluoridation. Earlier this year, the National Research Council issued a report about fluoride in drinking water. Buried in the mammoth size document is a statement that is just now filtering out to the public: that infants and children in our country are receiving a dose of fluoride that is three to four times that being received by adults, on a body weight basis. This is a deeply troubling admission, because tissues in babies' bodies are growing so rapidly that infants are dramatically more susceptible to harmful chemicals than adults.

The American Dental Association recently cited concerns for children's fluoride exposure in a new and quietly issued statement that should give every mother, babysitter, and grandmother pause. ADA now recommends that infant milk formula not be mixed with fluoridated city water! This is a huge development. ADA says that it wants to help prevent a "cosmetic" marking of children's teeth called dental fluorosis. But what does not make sense here, and in fact could be considered very disingenuous, is that the whole story about dental fluorosis is not being told by ADA.

First of all, most Americans have no idea what dental fluorosis is. They don't know that it manifests as white, yellow, or brown streaks or stains, and in some cases, as pits, on teeth of children who are exposed to too much fluoride while their permanent teeth are being formed. They don't know that this is an outer biomarker of an inner poisoning that has happened, akin to the bluish line appearing on the gums of lead-poisoned people. We're not being told that fluorosis affects 32% of all school kids and is NOT merely a "cosmetic defect." The moderate and severe forms of the condition now affect around two percent of whites and three to four percent of blacks and Mexican Americans, according to quietly-published statistics from the Centers for Disease Control. In fact, the National Research Council's report called severe dental fluorosis an adverse health effect. If you've never seen the disturbing photos of fluorosis, visit http://www.fluoridealert.org/dental-fluorosis.htm . Brace yourself. Moderate and severe fluorosis is not pretty.

Water districts are now placed in a difficult position. If the districts continue fluoridation, as ADA recommends, what do they say to poorer families with babies who are drinking formula? Who will pay for single moms on minimum wage to buy bottled water or expensive home filtration systems (since carbon filters don't remove fluoride)? Who will make sure that every single mom or childcare worker knows to not use fluoridated water? Does it make common sense to keep fluoridating, when dental industry journals admit teeth sealants are dramatically more effective than fluoride in preventing kids' cavities, and when babies and minorities are disproportionately harmed -- most without even being told what is causing the stains and pits on their teeth?

I am definitely not against dentists. I'm grateful we live here in America and have dentists. But most dentists haven't heard the whole story about fluoridation, and certainly neither has the general public. Since it's now come out that more than 90% of the fluoride water districts use is a captured air pollution discharge taken from fertilizer industry smokestack "scrubbing" devices, it is only a matter of time until enough of the public hears this information and learns the facts about fluoride. Most of the public doesn't know that eleven unions nationally in EPA, representing 7,000 scientists, lab workers, and others have contravened official EPA policy and called for an immediate halt to fluoridation.

Water districts must stop fluoridating. Our state health department must change its position supporting fluoridation. Call or email your water district to say, "Turn off the fluoride!" Is it common sense to believe that teeth are the only tissues in children's bodies harmed by fluoridation? Is collateral damage to infants and minorities an acceptable price for fluoridation?

FDA Approves Fluoride in Bottled Water; Fluoridated Water Reduce the
Risk of Tooth Decay

  Posted: 11/28/2006 1:08:28 PM

FDA announced last week it will allow fluoridation of bottled water
to assist in the prevention of dental caries (cavities), prompting
praise from the American Dental Association and concerns from anti-
fluoride groups.

Bottled water containing between 0.6 and 1.0 mg/L total fluoride will
be eligible to bear the following claim: "Drinking fluoridated water
may reduce the risk of [dental caries or tooth decay]." The claimis
not allowed with water intended for infants, FDA said.

The American Dental Association immediately praised the agency's
decision. "Whether you drink fluoridated water from the tap or buy it
in a bottle, you're doing the right thing for your oral health,"
saidADA executive director James Bramson. "Thanks to the FDA's
decision, bottlers can now claim what dentists have long known--that
optimallyfluoridated water helps prevent tooth decay."

However, FDA's decision didn't please groups opposed to fluoridation,
who claim that fluoride can cause negative health repercussions even
in the small quantities present in water. "Modern studies also link
fluoride to arthritis, allergies, kidney and thyroid dysfunction,
bone damage and cancer even at the low levels dentists claim is
optimal to reduce tooth decay," said Paul Beeber, president of the
New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc. "Adding
fluoride to bottled water implies to the American public that FDA
studies give fluoride a clean bill of health--and that's not true,"
he said.

No Fluoride for Babies, say Dentists
Posted by: NYSCOF on Nov 27, 2006 - 03:37 PM

The American Dental Association (ADA) warned their members, but not
the public, that fluoridated water must not be mixed into
concentrated formula or foods intended for babies one year and
younger, in a November 9th ADA e-mail alert.(1) The ADA joins the
Food and Drug Administration in recommending only non-fluoridated
water be used for reconstituting concentrated infant formulas.(1a)

Ready to feed U.S. milk-based formulas already contain from 0.04 to
0.55 milligrams of fluoride per liter (mg/L) of formula. Soy-based
formulas show a range of 0.04 to 0.47 mg/L fluoride (1b). Breast milk
contains a low 0.005-0.01 mg/L fluoride (1c) And breastfed babies are
less likely to get tooth decay.

"Who will alert parents," asks lawyer Paul Beeber, President, New
York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc. (NYSCOF).

Two-thirds of U.S. public water suppliers add fluoride chemicals,
based on a disproved theory that fluoride ingestion prevents
cavities. And, bottled water with added fluoride is now sold with
specific instructions to mix into infant formula.(2)

The ADA reports, "…infants could receive a greater than optimal
amount of fluoride through liquid concentrate or powdered baby
formula that has been mixed with water containing fluoride during a
time that their developing teeth may be susceptible to enamel
fluorosis."(3) The ADA recommends using fluoride-free water.

Enamel or dental fluorosis is white spotting, yellow, brown and/or
pitted permanent teeth. Pictures:
http://www.fluoridation.com/teeth.htm Dental fluorosis is the outward
sign of fluoride toxicity. Some studies indicate that bone damage is
more common in children with dental fluorosis. (3a)

NYSCOF news releases in 2000 and 2004 (4,5) cited studies linking
fluorosis to infant foods mixed with fluoridated water. Scientific
evidence here: http://www.fluoridealert.org/health/infant/

Some scientists also tried in vain to get the word out sooner as
described in "Suppression by Medical Journals of a Warning about
Overdosing Formula-Fed Infants with Fluoride," published in 1997 in
the Journal Accountability in Research.(10)

It took until 2006 for the ADA's alert, following the Food and Drug
Administration's October disapproval of fluoridated bottled water
marketed to babies,(6) and after the recent National Research
Council's (NRC) fluoride report indicating babies are fluoride
overdosed from "optimally" fluoridated water supplies.(7)

"The ADA claims the NRC report didn't question the safety of
fluoridation(8) but it did, as the ADA now admits," says Beeber.

"The NRC also revealed fluoridation's adverse effects to the thyroid
gland, diabetics, kidney patients, high water drinkers and others,"
says Beeber.

Now, the Centers for Disease Control reports that modern science
shows that fluoride absorbs into enamel topically.(9) However,
adverse effects occur upon ingestion. Further, the CDC admits enamel
fluoride concentration is not inversely related to cavities.

The Environmental Protection Agency is required to consider the most
vulnerable populations when setting allowable water fluoride levels.
To protect babies, allowable water fluoride levels must be near zero.

The Environmental Working Group analyzed government data in March
2006 and found that babies are over-exposed to fluoride in most major
U.S. cities.(11)

"This should end water fluoridation," says Beeber. "Fluoridation is a
failed concept that must be abandoned before more Americans are
harmed," says Beeber.

New WHO report tackles fluoride in drinking-water

21 NOVEMBER 2006 | GENEVA -- Millions of people are exposed to
excessive amounts of fluoride through drinking water contaminated
from natural geological sources. As a result, many suffer conditions
ranging from mild dental fluorosis to crippling skeletal fluorosis.
With the problem continuing to be unrecognized and neglected,
guidance is sorely needed.

Clinical dental fluorosis is characterized by staining and pitting of
the teeth. In more severe cases, all the enamel may be damaged. In
skeletal fluorosis, fluoride accumulates in the bone progressively
over many years, leading to stiffness and pain in the joints. In
severe cases, it can cause changes to bone structure, calcification
of ligaments, and crippling effects.

The World Health Organization's (WHO) publication, Fluoride in
Drinking-water addresses this urgent need, providing the latest
scientific evidence on the occurrence of fluoride, its health
effects, methods to reduce excess levels, and analysis techniques.

Guidance is particularly needed because fluoride is found in all
natural waters at some concentration. Low concentrations are good for
teeth, but excessive concentrations can lead to debilitating disease,
such as skeletal fluorosis, which has devastated some communities. In
China alone, more than 10 million people are estimated to suffer from
skeletal fluorosis.

While the global prevalence of dental and skeletal fluorosis is not
entirely clear, it is known that water is normally the major source
of fluoride exposure, with exposure from diet and from burning high
fluoride coal also major contributors in some settings. Fluoride
occurs at elevated concentrations in many areas of the world
including Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean and southern Asia. One of
the best known high fluoride areas extends from Turkey through Iraq,
Iran, Afghanistan, India, northern Thailand and China. However, there
are many other areas with water sources that contain high fluoride
levels and which pose a risk to those drinking the water, notably
parts of the rift valley in Africa. Many of these areas are arid and
alternative sources of water are not available.

This suffering caused by high levels of fluoride can be prevented.
Although removal of excessive fluoride from drinking-water may be
difficult and expensive, low-cost solutions that can be applied at a
local level do exist. Methods outlined in the monograph include: use
of crushed clay pots, bone charcoal, contact precipitation, or use of
activated alumina (absorptive filter). It is important that local
authorities consider the causes of fluorosis carefully and choose the
best and most appropriate means of dealing with excess fluoride
exposure taking into account the local conditions and sensitivities.

Fluoride in Drinking-water is one out of a series of WHO monographs,
which address the management of other chemicals in drinking-water,
such as arsenic or cyanotoxins.

Ashland sets limits on drinking water additives
The Associated Press
Published: Friday, November 24, 2006

ASHLAND - The Ashland City Council wants to underline its message to
the Oregon Legislature: Don't tell us what to put in our drinking
water.

So it passed an ordinance this week making it illegal to put
fluoride, or anything else that would act as medication, in the
city's water supply.

advertisement Although the American Dental Association and the
national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention endorse
fluoridation, council members said they considered a divided
community and issues of control.

``I think the bigger discussion here is who's involved with what we
put in our bodies,'' council member Cate Hartzell said.

The council voted in February 2005 to oppose a bill before the
Legislature that would have required fluoridation of municipal water
in Oregon.

They said the ordinance passed Tuesday was designed to send a
stronger message to the Legislature, which meets again in January.

Michael Framson of Medford, who said he is a member of Oregon
Citizens for Safe Drinking Water, praised the ordinance and said
fluoride could have serious long-term health effects.

Dear producer,

Your story offered contradictory advice in the amount of fluoride
recommended for infants.

In the beginning, the ADA suggests that babies under 1 year of age
should not receive formula mixed with fluoridated water. Then at the
end of the story, you claimed, "If you want your child to avoid getting
cavities, children aged six-months to 16 years should get fluoride."

You need to keep your story straight. Fluoridation has done nothing to
help the dental situation in the United States, but it has put more
business in the laps of the dental association.

Next time, consider checking into the facts before publishing false
information.
