Sure, you can drink the stuff. That's what they say about tritium, uranium tailings, perchlorates, lead, fluoride. Operative word being "can". But afterwards, your thyroid goes wonky, your liver and kidneys get clogged, you can't have babies and you may live sicker and die sooner. But yes, you can drink the stuff.
Health and environment do not matter to them - as long as there is a piece of government paper with a MAC number on it, and as long as a cash strapped municipality like Barry's Bay can be bribed with lies and a fat cheque, no one has to try to safely remediate or reduce these toxins. Just pay your fee, back up your truck full of its toxic load to the lake and Fill'er up to the MAC!
There is no legal framework in place to protect the Environmental Commons here. We are so far behind places like Ecquador now.
As long as there is a scientific panel of engineers and economists to ignore the relevant health evidence - like Health Canada's expert panels deciding it's ok for us to swallow bisphenol A because the only end point worth considering is raging fatal cancers not hermaphrodite babies, and deciding that fluoride in water at 0.7 ppm is "optimal" because they were allowed to pick and choose what scientific evidence of harm they included in their "comprehensive" report so they ignored bone, thyroid, brain and gut. As long as there is a parts per million or microgram per kilogram of body weight deemed acceptable to eat or swallow, the government approves of pollution. Heck, they reward it.
The Ontario Ministry of Environment here is supposed to administer and obey the terms of the International Joint Treaty on Great Lakes-St. Lawrence water quality. Last week I informed the Project Director of the two Great Lakes United resolutions that were recently passed at the AGM, on reducing radioactive substances and reducing artificial water fluoridation chemicals going into the Great Lakes Watershed (which includes the Algonquin Park headwaters, near Barry's Bay.) He didn't know about them even though GLU is a main source of info and influence to the MOE regarding Great Lakes water pollution issues.
He was not aware that his own department was conducting an Environmental Bill of Rights Review into silicofluorides. He did not know that the chemicals used for fluoridation are phosphate fertilizer industry scrubber waste. He did not know that fluoride is cumulative, or that for every microgram increase of fluoride in fresh surface water, an aquatic organism is robbed of one milligram (i.e. a thousand times more) calcium and magnesium.

The Barrys Bay sewage treatment plant is on Lake Kaminiskeg, (near the public beach & town water supply intake) & is equipped to treat Barrys Bay grey water & sewage. It releases the treated water into Lake Kaminiskeg -which flows into the York & Madawaska rivers, eventually reaching the Ottawa River & St Lawrence Seaway respectively.This April -Barrys Bay accepted dozens of tanker-loads (3200 metric tonnes) of 'leachate effluent' from the Bancroft/Faraday landfill - for 'treatment'. Google 'landfill leachate'; you will find that it contains heavy metals...mercury, lead & a host of chemicals mix & perculate with rain water in a landfill or dump. To keep 'leachate' at the landfill site from contaminating the surrounding streams and water table, modern landfills have liners, which drain this toxic effluent into holding ponds. With winter snow melt and spring rainfall these leachate holding ponds are prone to overflowing. Landfill leachate effluent contains carcinogens (causing cancer), has been proven to cause human liver, brain, & kidney organ failure & which can pass on genetic defects (mutagens). Our local Barrys Bay council accepted $50,000 for this 'emergency' dumping Bancrofts spring overflowing dump leachate. They insist you can 'drink the stuff' ...and are in a whitewash cover-up mode.I am interested in contact with anyone who knows of similar situations like this in Ontario or elsewhere, or if anyone knows about past uranium mine tailings dumped in or near the Bancroft/Faraday dump. The University of Waterloo has a big ground water research team. You could inquire with those people...likely in the
Environmental Studies department.
Also the University of Alberta in Edmonton is home base for Dr. David Schindler, who is Canada's foremost fresh water scientist and has been sounding the alarm for years about the looming threat to Canada's fresh water supply. You could contact this watchdog too. And contact CBC TV News who have done some features on this subject.
I believe CTV-TV did a feature about Dr. Schindler. Schindler says we're in danger of having no drinkable fresh water in
our land mass [within five or so years he says] if we continue to do as we've been doing. There are few fresh drinkable
water sources left in Canada in fact. All of this info 'leaked' out in an Auditor General's Report to a Senate Committee
on the Environment a few years ago which I happened to see on television/CPAC...then it was suppressed and I have made
inquiries about that report but cannot get access to that report.
These are some of the reasons we started the Canadian Fresh Water Jamboree as we discussed last year.
I'm pushing hard to a national water strategy and more people are talking about this all the time.
This is another purpose behind the Fresh Water Jamboree btw - action!
