Fluoride is not in every toothpaste on the market. If you go to a health food
store you can
buy toothpaste without fluoride. There is a poison warning label on fluoride
toothpaste,
saying if you swallow too much contact a poison control center.

You hear a lot about it being in the water because it is completely unnecessary
to add it to
water. Even according to advocates for fluoridation there is now little
difference in tooth
decay rates when comparing fluoridated to non-fluoridated communities.
Opponents of
fluoridation say there is no difference in tooth decay rates and there are some
studies
showing fluoride causing decay. So the debate rages mainly in communities where
fluoridation is being introduced for the first time. Currently these new
communties are
sold fluoridation like a religious "faith" belief, because the fluordatiors have
no
current studies or data that show a substantial benefit, so none are presented.
Or,
sometimes city decision makers are given data and studies that are many decades
old.
Fluoridation has spread also becaue the decision has often been taken away from
local
elected politicians. Mandatory laws mean no local decisions.

There is the known and admitted downside of fluoridation - increased fluorosis.
Plus
more negatives that have been suppressed and denied for decades. We have to put
up
with a lot of pollution and chemical exposures, but this is one we can do
without.

The semantics used to sell fluoridation are interesting. Proponents talk about
the
"benefits" of fluoridation. But there is really only one potential benefit -
reduced tooth
decay. It's like saying there are multiple benefits for putting on suntan
lotion. 1) I don't
get sunburned. 2) My skin looks nicer 3) I don't stay home from work because
I'm
sunburned. 4) My skin doesn't get red and peel away. And so on.

As Paul Connett says, swallowing fluoridated water is like swallowing suntan
lotion to
prevent sunburn. There are many reason not to fluroidate the water and only one
reason
to do it. That's why the fluoridators avoid debates on the subject - and why
you seldom
hear much about it in mainstream media.
