This time lapse film was shot by Dr. John Ott, a pioneer in light therapy as well as time lapse photography. Dr. Ott was said to have done many films for the American Dental Association before he did this one for a different client. He was threatened and pressured and had to back away from this particular film. The narrator, Dr. Jonathan Forman of Ohio, voluntarily resigned from leadership positions on medical boards after the establishment got upset. A scientific lab did the work under contract. The main objection from the establishment was that "mice are not men." The film shows mouse connective tissue cells being exposed to 1 part in 20 million fluoride. The cells slow down, shrink, and die. The experimenters thought that this level of fluoride represented the amount of fluoride in blood with a fluoridation level of 1.2 ppm F. The experimenters found similar results with even lower levels ( 1 in 60 million) of fluoride. To my knowledge, no one else has ever done a film like this. Doug Cragoe

Dr Herzy Phoenix hearing on fluoridation
The Phoenix Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittee, chaired by pro-fluoride Councilwomen Thelda Williams, held there hearing on fluoridation today. Leading the charge against fluoridation was Dr. William J. Hirzy, a chemist, a professor at American University, and a former Vice-President of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s employees union. His full testimony can be viewed here. Sadly, the subcommittee of four voted unanimously to continue the fluoridation of Phoenix’s public water supply. While this is a temporary setback, Fluoride Free Arizona will continue to build momentum locally and at the state-level, and will not be ending their fight for fluoride-free water anytime in the near future.

Recommendations for Using Fluoride to Prevent and Control Dental Caries in the United States
Recommendations and Reports -August 17, 2001 / 50(RR14);1-42 - In the earliest days of fluoride research, investigators hypothesized that fluoride affects enamel and inhibits dental caries only when incorporated into developing dental enamel (i.e., preeruptively, before the tooth erupts into the mouth) (30,31). Evidence supports this hypothesis (32--34), but distinguishing a true preeruptive effect after teeth erupt into a mouth where topical fluoride exposure occurs regularly is difficult. However, a high fluoride concentration in sound enamel cannot alone explain the marked reduction in dental caries that fluoride produces (35,36). The prevalence of dental caries in a population is not inversely related to the concentration of fluoride in enamel (37), and a higher concentration of enamel fluoride is not necessarily more efficacious in preventing dental caries (38). The laboratory and epidemiologic research that has led to the better understanding of how fluoride prevents dental caries indicates that fluoride's predominant effect is posteruptive and topical and that the effect depends on fluoride being in the right amount in the right place at the right time. Fluoride works primarily after teeth have erupted, especially when small amounts are maintained constantly in the mouth, specifically in dental plaque and saliva (37).

The goal is to stimulate a Congressional hearing on this national policy, which has not been aired before Congress and the public since 1978. Since 1978, a wealth of peer reviewed literature has been published on the carcinogenic, genotoxic and neurotoxic effects of fluoride, as well as on the efficacy of fluoridation. We believe that a full, open debate on the merits of the science underpinning fluoridation - and EPA's drinking water standards - is long overdue.
