As the world continues to be dogged by viral diseases such as Ebola, Marburg and HIV/AIDS, the UN's World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warn that the H5N1 Avian Influenza virus may soon mutate into a human to human transmissible form, causing an epidemic worse than the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic.

If this happens, the global economy will come crashing down. International borders will be closed, quarantines will be put in place State and county borders will be shut as authorities try to stop this bird flu. Schools, theatres, restaurants, places of worship may be ordered closed; food, medicine, and vital services might come up short.

Because H5N1 has been fatal to 90-100% of infected poultry and other birds and 50% of the people who have contracted it, authorities have been unable to guess how many people a mutation would kill. Previous global pandemics, like that of 1918-19, claimed 50 to 100 million lives -- about 2%-3% of those infected. But the coming flu pandemic could be far worse.
