thought that it would be a good idea.  i wish it was easy to drive to
orlando and sarasota every time i wanted to hang out with a group that
share the same "situation", and i doubt that im the only one that feels
that way, so the next logical thing to do is make something more

well i figured i should introduce myself and tell my story since ive
been lurking here for a long time. my name is tony, i have had hsv for
18 years. i wish i could say its no big deal anymore but i would be a
liar. its been pretty hard for me. pair hsv with an already low self
esteem and it just makes things harder.

when i was 20, i met a girl who i thought was incredible. i would go
to the library at the college every evening just to sit across from
her. well after awhile we became friends and we started dating. she
was my first girlfriend and the first woman i ever had sex with. one
night she told me she had hsv. she was in tears and feared i was going
to walk away from her. well having lived my life being rejected by
classmates and friends, i held her hand and told her everything would
be ok and that i still cared for her. sad thing is, i didnt even know
what hsv was at the time. and i never took the time to educate myself
because i was so crazy in love with this girl. or at least that is
what i thought. a year later while i was away at usf, i saw video tape
of her at a party. she was making out with someone i knew. it really
hurt my feelings. but little did i realize i would have something to
remember her by for the rest of my life.

a couple years went by before i had another girlfriend. i finally met
another girl while i was shopping at the mall. she was really nice.
and we seemed to hit it off well. we dated for a little while before
we got intimate with one another. well i was so freaked out about
telling her about the hsv that i didnt tell her. long story short, i
gave her hsv. i felt so horrible. i made her cry. i guess she stuck
around because she figured she had no other choice. well five years
later, she ran out on me while i was on duty. she left me a pretty
nasty note telling me how horrible a person i am. i spent the next 7
years of my life alone.

over the course of the next 7 years i dated a little, but everytime i
told the girl about the hsv, they quickly disappeared. i felt alone
and isolated. i never turned to alcohol or drugs but i can understand
why people do now. i would have suicide fantasies quite often. it
scared me enough to seek help. and after awhile i started feeling
better. but i was still ashamed of having hsv and figured i would be
alone for the rest of my life and never have a wife or family.

one night while chatting (really whining) online, i met a girl who
said she had a wonderful friend who she wanted me to meet. her friend
was named cara. she was tall, blonde, and beautiful. she had hsv too.
she lived in orlando (180 miles from me) but i didnt seem to care. one
evening she just drove to my house to see me. i had such a great time
with her. i found someone who enjoyed a lot of the things i enjoyed.
it felt to perfect. i was feeling happy. i spent the next year driving
to orlando to spend time with her. one night i told her i loved her.
and i really felt it. she cried when i said it. she said she loved me
too. i really felt i had found the one.

about a year and a half later, cara and her son moved into my home.
every seemed fine at first, but over time i started to change. i
started feeling pressure to keep things normal. i felt like i didnt
have time for myself. i still loved cara and her son dearly, but part
of me started feeling like i had lost my identity. then one night it
happened, i made cara cry. i shouted at her. i scared her and she
cried. i felt horrible inside. i couldnt stand seeing her cry. i was
hurting someone i loved so dearly. to this day i cant stand the sight
or sound of a woman crying. it brings back the images of her pretty
blue eyes full of tears. i started getting paranoid that her family
didnt like me either. i had a hard time talking to them when we went
to orlando to visit. i couldnt get over the fact that they knew i got
nasty.

things would go back and forth. cara tried harder to make things work
than i did. i took on a lot of responsibility at work. the added
responsibility stressed me out. instead of talking about it with cara,
i would just bottle it all up. and unfortunately, i would blow up at
her. i did it again, i made her cry. i hated myself for making her
cry. i was tearing her apart. it got to the point to i really hated
looking in the mirror each day. it wasnt about hsv anymore. it was
about me being a good person or not. someone once said if you love
something you should set it free. so in my selfish way, i sacrificed
our relationship. i had to let cara go, because seeing her cry made me
  hate myself more and more. i figured i could be alone for awhile and
work things out and maybe cara would come back. well, i have not heard
from cara in almost 2 years. i guess its true, if they dont come back,
it wasnt meant to be. now im alone again. everynight before i go to
bed i say good night to her as if she were still sleeping next to me.

so why am i writing this? i dont know really. maybe im venting because
im depressed. maybe i just have to get this off my chest to try to
move on. or maybe im just hoping cara might read this. i dont have the
balls to write her. i dont feel i have the right to impose on her life
since i asked her to get out of mine. so i guess that the reason:
cara, im very sorry for being such a terrible person. i miss you and
rj very much. i hope you are both well. i hope you are both happy. i
will always cherish my memories of you both. i miss you very much. my
life seems very empty without you. i will always love you

for about 3 years now, and with the stigma attached to it, it's amazing

From Sarasota, Take 41 North towards the downtown area.  Turn left on
Gulfstream Ave. and go over the Ringling Bridge to St. Armand's
Circle.  Go around the circle until you see the sign to Longboat
Key.  Take a right on Boulevard of the Presidents and head towards
Longboat Key.  Keep going on Gulf Drive for several miles.  The Beach
House will be on the left before you get to Cortez Rd.
From Tampa/St. Pete 275, take exit 2 towards US 41 South.  Follow
signs  to US 41 South Bradenton/Palmetto.  Turn right on Manatee Ave.
West.  Go 8 miles.  Turn left on E. Bay Drive.  Make a slight left on
Gulf Dr. N.  The Beach House will be on the right.
