We are the largest and oldest forum for adults whose scoliosis surgery has resulted in loss of lumbar lordosis (iatrogenic flatback syndrome). The best-known cause of this syndrome is the Harrington rod, but Luque rods have also been implicated. Some surgeons are reportedly still causing flatback syndrome simply by failing to consider sagittal mechanics. Flatback syndrome is expected to affect at least one million adults with histories of scoliosis and spinal fusion. Symptoms include decreasing ability to stand upright, with a forward-leaning ("hunchbacked") posture; need for the support of a walker or shopping cart; inability to lie flat; hyperextension (craning) of the neck; disabling chronic pain. The only definitive treatment is massive and complex spinal revision surgery. It is imperative to choose a revision surgeon with specific experience and expertise in the correction of flatback deformities.
